  1. The possibility of Andy Masur coming aboard means Judd Sirott is probably out. Hollandsworth would be an interesting choice.
  2. Heard today that Judd Sirott is on the way out too, so this could get interesting. Two new guys with Pat could be a nice energizer to the booth. It has gotten a bit dull the last couple years (granted, the team has been bad, but still).
  3. Free agent managers this winter: Jim Leyland, Ned Yost, Don Mattingly, Ron Gardenhire, Joe Girardi, and Eric Wedge, among others. It would be worth it for the Cubs to explore other options besides Sveum. Even if the team won't be in contention until 2015 or 2016.
  4. Usually they like to have a former player/coach in the color spot. It's all politics what about a talk show host? As an addition to the booth with Pat?
  5. FYI: This is the last year of Moreland's contract. I think WGN will open it up after the season, and may get creative with it. Maybe a new stats/sabermetrics guy?
  6. I don't think the Cubs would want Grace from a PR standpoint. Two DUI's is a big reason why he didn't get renewed in Arizona. Any chance Steve Stone comes back, or is his contract with the Sox still going? Lou Piniella?
  7. Time to get serious about a replacement. I heard Nomar might get a look if he gets out of his ESPN contract.
  8. D'Back reporter Nick Piecoro tweeting today: "Source says Dbacks expected to reach out to Cubs announcer and former manager Bob Brenly about announcing vacancy, if they haven't already." Apparently, D'Backs are also pursuing Steve Stone, FWIW. They are looking for two new guys on the TV side.
  9. There could be a new TV broadcast team in 2013. Bob Brenly's contract is up after this season, and with no extension deal figured out yet there is already speculation about him joining another team's broadcast booth or going after a managerial job. Not really sure where to begin on possible names to replace Brenly in the booth, but hopefully not Hollandsworth. At the end of the day, it looks like Brenly will be returning, though: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-brenly-confident-hell-return-to-cubs-booth-20120826,0,860596.story
  10. 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh just reported that the Pirates are "aggressively kicking the tires" on Soriano (not sure how that works, but yeah). Indications are that after Victorino-to-Dodgers and Pence-to-Giants, the Pirates feel they need to add offense in order to keep pace for the playoff push.
  11. Josh Vitters is hitting .302 with 13 HR's and 48 RBI at Triple-A. He has an OBP of .356, OPS of .866, and has struck out just 52 times in over 300 at-bats. I like the way Valbuena has played 3B for the last month, but he's clearly a stop gap. Why not bring up Vitters soon and give him a look at the major league level? The Cubs would still have him under control for several years if they choose to promote.
  12. Weirdest lineup in Cubs history. Why not just put LaHair in LF and leave Campana and DeJesus in their spots?
  13. Was just looking back on this thread I made last year when the Cubs were searching for a radio color commentator. My question: With Moreland working the color for a year-plus now, are you pleased with him on the broadcast? How is he with Pat Hughes? I've heard some discussions more recently about Moreland, especially about his one fill-in inning per game, which usually isn't very good since he does PBP during that time. I don't dislike Moreland as the color, but it is what it is. I'm interested to see if Kerry Wood takes the seat next to Pat when Moreland's contract is up in a couple years. If not, I'd like to hear Doug Glanville next to Pat. We'll see...
  14. Phil Rogers is bad. Really bad. I don't think he double checks any of these "rumors" he hears. Tribune needs to force Phil's retirement sooner rather than later.
  15. It has been a privilege and pleasure to my ears to listen to Dave Campbell on WGN today and Saturday. I like Bob Brenly as the color commentator for broadcasts, but Campbell was very, very good this weekend. We're at the All-Star break, so I have one simple solution to this — fire Quade on Monday, put Brenly in the dugout, and Campbell in the booth with Len. Seems easy enough.
  16. BA omitted Kansas State outfielder Nick Martini from the list. He played his high school ball in the Northwest suburbs. He was co-Big 12 player of the year last season as a sophomore, and led K-State in hitting all three years that he's been there. He is a pure hitter with great speed, average defense in left or center field. Should be taken somewhere between rounds 3-5.
  17. Once Brett Jackson comes off the 7-day DL at Tennessee, the Cubs should seriously consider promoting him. Before the injury, Jackson was hitting .295 with an OBP of .420. Put him in CF and bat him leadoff.
  18. How are one of the many aforementioned Iowa pitchers not starting tonight's game? The bullpen might be ruined after this one. Very poor decision by Cubs management.
  19. I second this. Based purely off pitching matchups, the Cubs could definitely win two out of three this weekend. Milwood would give the Red Sox an immediate boost. Aceves doesn't have much starting experience and Wakefield has given up a ton of hits and runs this season.
  20. By sending Colvin down, I think it shows that Cubs management still has him in their plans and want him to get everyday at-bats so he doesn't get completely ruined. That is a good thing. Hopefully, Hendry brings up Campana, Montanez, or Snyder for the last outfield spot. They're all playing well at Iowa right now. Leave DeWitt in the infield.
  21. For some reason, I don't really like the idea of signing Jose Reyes for SS and moving Castro over to either 2B or SS. I wouldn't be overwhelmingly opposed, but Reyes will probably want maximum SS money. In all (especially for Nuts & Gum), do the Cubs actually have a realistic chance of signing both Pujols and Reyes, or something similar to that combo? I know they have a considerable amount of contracts coming off the books, but I didn't think it was that many. Pujols is worth a 8-to-10 year deal somewhere in the $250-300 million range. He's the most feared hitter on the planet and probably the best overall hitter in baseball. If he legitimately seeks out other option than the Cardinals for whatever reason, the Cubs must pounce on that opportunity. It may be now or never for the franchise.
  22. Great stats, dew, thanks. When I give these stats, my friend comes back and says that Quade and Cubs management has been against Colvin from Day 1 of spring training this season. That he never gave him a chance. If I remember correctly, weren't Colvin and Fukudome battling for the job in spring and then he got opportunities in the regular season? After call, Colvin is just 6-for-42 in starts this season (I looked that up). Is my friend just looking too much into it? I thought Colvin did get his opportunities?
  23. Does anyone ever feel like Quade is ruining Colvin. I have a friend who thinks this and goes insane for Colvin. We argue all the time about why and why not he doesn't get as many at-bats anymore. I have to tell him, well, it's because Colvin didn't do all that well in April when he actually started like two or three times per week, and he hasn't gotten a hit all of May. At the same time, though, Colvin hasn't started in a WHILE. Shouldn't Quade be starting him at least once a week? Would it be better if he just played basically everyday in Des Moines? What are the stats/splits on Colvin this year (the deeper stats that you guys always throw out)? I kind of want to shut up this friend of mine.
