  1. I love Aramis. The escape clause after the 4th year, as many people have mentioned, isn't too big of a deal. I doubt he'd be able to get more money than that at age 32. I guess if he doesn't like the direction the team is heading, it leaves him with the option of going to a contender while he's still near his prime. Now let's get Drew and Schmidt in cubs uniforms.
  2. Don't you mean 31-36 mil? 110 minus 79 is 31 and 115 minus 79 is 36. Man, if we could find someone to take our dead weight (Dempster, Izturis, Jones, Rusch retire, maybe Eyre) we'd have a ton of money to spend.
  3. What's the '07 Free Agent market looking like?
  4. NTC So...players waive NTC all the time. Is Ramirez on record saying that he refused to waive his NTC last year to go to a team with a chance to compete into October? Maybe he is, but if so, I missed it.
  5. Very nice spin on things. Cubs should have dealt Ramirez last year. I believe they could have gotten a few top prospects from one of the LA teams. Ramirez for Kendrick and Adenhart or Ramirez and Maddux for LaRoche and Elbert.
  6. HRs must be the only deciding factor when it comes to pitchers winning the Slugger. Z had a bad average, bad OBP, and a lower slugging percentage than he had last year. Oh well, Z is still god.
  7. I never thought I would say this with any sort of sincerity, but I honestly don't know how much longer I can remain a Cubs fan. This is just absolutely pitiful. It's hard to put so much time, money, and energy into an orginization that doesn't even seem to care. This is getting to be ridiculous. If the Cubs don't do anything major the rest of this offseason (which now I know they wont) I for sure won't be buying tickets next February. I hope you will all do the same. Disappointed...
  8. I would. There's no way he's 9 million dollars better than Marshall, Marmol, Guzman, etc...Get Schmidt and rely on Prior, Miller, and the young guys to fill the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation. Spend the rest of the money in the budget on resigning Ramirez, signing Drew, and getting one more bat (probably 2nd base). It's not ideal, but its better than paying Padilla 10 mil.
  9. bulls + wallace - chandler = cubs + soriano - ramirez chandler is nowhere near as good as ramirez...but I guess wallace isn't as good as soriano. im starting to really dislike the wallace signing. we need inside scoring and so far, wallaces defense hasnt been what i expected.
  10. Nah, I just don't have class on Fridays and a buddy of mine came in from out of town. My sobriety (or lack thereof) was out of my hands tonight... On a side note, I type really well when I've been drinking. Granted, it takes a whole lot longer, but it still usually comes out fairly nice. same here(edit-as far as typing, i have 8AM)... as long as im not really gone my typing is fine although i care a lot less about capitilization and punctuation.. takes so long tho And just for the record (I got six so far) WrigleyField 22 Rob Treeman Yeti WeGotWood98 YearofDaCubs add on, please drinking is nice. i was hoping to get back and here some good news but that didnt happen so im gonna pass out. gnite love you cobs.
  11. That would be interesting...i just don't see any of those teams (other than the Astros) having the money to pay $20-$30 mil just to negotiate a contract with a player. My gut feeling is the Yanks
  12. For 6-8 million bucks (if not more), I'd be inclined to take my chances that one of Guzman, Marshall, Mateo, or Marmol would be able to put up an ERA approximating 4.50. I'd even be more apt to rush Gallagher up to the bigs and take my chances with him than throw money at Padilla. Gallagher has an advanced approach to the game, and I think he'd be able to handle the adjustment fairly well. Veal definately needs some more seasoning, though... Here's my thinking and pardon me if I'm being too harsh or impatient with the young guys. I didn't see anytning in those guys last year that made me believe they are worthy of being in the 2007 rotation. The only guys I want in the fifth spot of the rotation are either Wade Miller or Mark Prior - I'm optimistic that one of those guys will be healthy (and I'm assuming Miller will be back). Figuring Z as the #1 and Hill as the #4 is the approach I would take. Therefore, the Cubs absolutely need to sign a #2 and a #3. Assuming Ramirez is signed, in my estimation, the offseason cannot be viewed as successful if we don't at least have 2 new starters in the fold plus 1 new bopper at either CF, RF or SS and a decent OBP guy playing 2B or SS. If the payroll is truly $115M, the Cubs have ample resources to get it done! But would the production of Padilla or someone similar be $8 mil better than Marshall, Marmol, or Guzman? I'd say no. That said, if you can get 2 stud starters, then you spend the money to do it. As you said, we also need to resign Ramirez and add another two solid batters.
  13. I have little faith in him staying healthy for 120-135 games. I also think his defense is a huge liability, but that said, the offensive production would be worth it if he could stay healthy.
  14. If the Cubs actually bid that, I doubt they would allow it to leak. Either a) this is complete B.S. or b) they actually bid more and leaked a lower number to make the Yankees believe they dont have to bid some crazy high number to win him. I'd guess a.
  15. Makes sense for Cleveland. Marte is ahead of Kouzmanoff at 3b. They were also discussing the possibility of bringing Belliard back to play 2b. Now they don't have to. I just read the article and noticed the comments about Giles. My guess is San Diego probably already has something in the works to bring in Giles. If they get Giles, it would be a good move for both teams.
  16. How about a 30 million dollar bid with a 4/30 contract with a player option for the 5th year? works for me as well. Question is, how much is boras going to want to string out of the winner. Considering the "window" for the winner of the bid and Boras/Matsuzaka would have when talking contract. Boras can't really afford to "string out the winner." Right now, if the Cubs win the bid....I would offer Boras/Matsazaka a "generous deal" of 5 yrs $50 mill (as someone allude to earlier) at the start of the negotiations, and tell Boras that the deal won't change much up or down. The franchise that wins the bid, wins all together, whether they signed him or not. Is there anything to stop a team, say like the Orioles or Blue Jays, from bidding some outrageous number (with no intention of signing the player) so that the Yankees don't win? Because, as I understand, if the teams don't come to a deal, the team gets its bid money back. I think all of MLB would hate that team, so maybe that's the answer to my question.
  17. Against the Marlins. That was awesome. Yeah I remember that play too, I just remember it being against the Brewers and it being a double...hmmm I guess I'm losing it.
  18. So say it cost about $30 million to win the bid, what kind of contract do you think he'd agree to? I'm sure this has been discussed but I don't have time to page through. Also, say the Cubs miraculously won, how would it affect their budget this year? Thanks
  19. Besides, signing relievers is not proactive. It's going straight to the used car lot while everybody else is looking for new models. It's not much of an accomplishment to come away with the premier middle relievers on the market. Middle relievers don't win you baseball games. They help you not lose them. But the Cubs have had lineup and rotation weakness for a while now, and Jim ignored both to solidify a secondary unity. I don't agree with this assessment. Signing middle relievers can be as you described, but the Cubs signed the premiere middle relievers available in each of the years we're talking about. These are all guys who had stellar numbers at the time of signing with closer potential. That helps you win. There is no such an animal as a "premire middle releivers". There are only middle relivers who stink and those who are medicore. The very nature of pitching in middle relief spells medicore. I understand what you're trying to say, but it's wrong. There are premier middle relievers. Premier meaning the best of the best. So they are the best of the best of what they do....pitch in middle relief. Some players consistently perform extremely well in the middle relief role and I would consider those players premier middle relievers.
  20. I feel the same. Hopefully, it serves as a wakeup call. It comes at the perfect time, at the very least. You just hope they get away from that arrogance that seemed to cost them in the AZ and Miami games, as well as last year's playoff game. Through the first 5 games, it seemed like they had gotten past that issue. They looked incredibly focused and seemed to be playing with a purpose. It really looked like they had learned from the playoff loss. Two out of the last three games, though, they've looked like they've regressed. Goony clarified my point perfectly. I keep hearing how Lovie won't let them look ahead or get too involved in their own hype, but that's exactly what I'm seeing. I'm glad they don't really have a game to overlook the next five weeks... I dont think he was saying they should necessarily win because they are so good, I think he was just saying they should win because theyre at home. Just hyping up the home field advantage factor, I guess....

    Week 9

They only gave up 25. I'm guessing the JT INT return doesn't count...
  22. That's what I said. Someone said it's the worst Dolphins team since before the Marino days. I've been a Dolphins fan for a long time and this is probably one of the most talented teams since Marino retired...they just beat themselves, have horrible play calling, and have a bad O-line (although not playing too bad today). This game aint over yet...I've seen the Dolphins blow much bigger leads with much less time. Figures the one game the Dolphins win, is the one game I wouldn't mind them losing (I'm also a huge Bears fan).
  23. Yes, there's a tourney for the national title. Okay, thanks. I figured, but I hadn't heard anything about it and I've never paid any attention to college soccer prior to this year.
