  1. I'll take Baldelli and his .871 OPS in CF. Drew in RF. Trade Izturis and JJ for anything and sign Lugo to play SS. Lugo Murton Lee Drew Ramirez Baldelli Barrett DeRosa I don't like handing DeRosa the 2b job, but that's probably what would happen. Our top 7 hitters are pretty solid too, so I don't see it as a problem.
  2. Why? It's not like either will be worth their contracts. The Cubs need pitching, and will have to overpay to get it. Still, Zito and Schmidt want BIG contracts and both have major flaws, and really...Zito isn't even all that good. Plus, both of them have pretty big limits as to where they actually want to go. I'd rather trade for some above average pitchers like Weston, and sign some like Lily and Igawa. And just build and incredible offense around that. . Who's this Weston fella you speak of?
  3. But he's going from Safeco to Wrigley and the AL West (Seattle, Oakland and Anaheim are pitcher's parks) to the NL Central. He's a good guy to take a risk on. He has good stuff. But his price tag is going to be pretty expensive - I'd at least take a look at Schmidt first and fail at going after him before moving to the Meche tier of FA pitchers. I haven't looked at numbers, but isn't Safeco regarded as a pitcher's park? And I also don't really see a whole lot of difference in talent level between the AL west and the NL central outside of the DH being there. The Angels and A's have both struggled offensively the last 2 years. Aside from Meche possibly figuring it out under Rothschild, I don't see a lot of reason for optimism, especially since he averaged less than 6 IP/start last year with a nearly 1.5 whip. Well he got killed by Texas last year (14.21 ERA in two starts-both at Texas). As I noted earlier in the thread, he pitched amazing in 4 starts vs NL teams last year. I know it's only 4 starts, but there have been plenty of guys who switch over to the NL and have more sucess. Being able to face the pitcher once every 9 ABs helps a lot.
  4. I would be fine dealing Eyre. Me too. He'd probably be near the top of the list of guys I'd be willing to trade.
  5. Well that sucks. I wonder if we agreed on a trade and talked to him, if he would change his mind and waive his NTC. I'd really like Burrell in RF with Drew in CF and Murt in LF.

Everything I've said regarding Meche was under the asumption that the reports that Schmidt wants to play on the West Coast are true, and that he wouldn't come to the Cubs. I'd much rather overpay for a solid #2 starter like Schmidt or Zito than for someone like Meche.
  7. Carl Pavano is making $10M/year, Chan Ho Park $11M/year, Jaret Wright $8M/year. Still think he's overpriced? And, Moose has made 31, 27, 30 and 32 starts the past four years. He's not fragile whatsoever. Agree. Good deal for the Yanks.
  8. The only problem is none of the stud starters want to come here (Zito, Schmidt) and then there's a huge drop off in talent. So either you have to overpay for a mediocre starter (like Meche, Padilla, Lilly), give the 3 remaining rotation spots to Miller, Prior and the kids (Marmol, Marshall, Guzman), or trade for a starter or two. None of these options are good. If you can trade for 2 good starters without giving up too much talent, I believe that's the way to go. If we do have to sign one of the mediocre starters, my choice would be Meche.
  9. I'm guessing lots of people wouldn't mind Meche. The minding comes up if/when he gets a longterm expensive deal and is passed off as the big time pitching acquisition of the offseason. Meche is a fine gamble at the back of the rotation and for short-term. He could give you 180 IP and 100 ERA+. He hasn't shown that he's likely to though, and hasn't earned the premium that other guys have, by repeatedly doing that or better. 1 year, $5m, great. 2/12, okay 3/27, and nobody else comes in? Uh-uh. If a risk like Meche accounts for 8% of your payroll, you aren't spending wisely. Now, if Meche got 3/27, but they also added Drew, traded little for Westbrook and switched out Izturis with Lugo. Okay, I'll live with it. Well put. I'll agree with all that. I just see him as a better option that someone like Padilla. Padilla is for sure going to get at least 9 mil per year, IMO. I think Meche could put up numbers just as good for hopefully a few million less. I'd like to see a 2/12 deal.
  10. I think its more that people dont want us to over pay for Meche, he's high risk low reward type of guy. Money better spent elsewhere when one of our young arms could probably do just as well for much less money. I agree with that. I just like the idea of Meche better than some other options available. I don't know how much Meche would cost. I'd possibly go as high as 7 mil, but nothing over that. Like I said, I could definitely see him with an ERA at about 4. I don't have confidence in any of our young starters to put up that kind of ERA.
  11. I know I'm in the minority about this, but I really wouldn't mind Meche. The guy has some good stuff and some potential. Maybe a change of scenery and a move to the NL will be good for him. I wouldn't be surprised to see him put up an ERA at about 4. Last year he pitched 4 games vs NL teams. 2 against San Diego, 1 against the Dbacks, and 1 against the Giants. In those 4 games, he pitched 29.1 innings and gave up only 6 ER, 20 hits, and 5 walks. I know those offenses aren't great, but most of the offenses in the NL aren't very good.
  12. You don't remember last year's team being extremely inconsistent in November? The 2004-2005 team was consistently bad at least. There are eight new players on this team, including two rookies whom I expect to be solid contributors by season's end, and the team's November schedule is brutal. Maybe I'm the only one who wasn't expecting the Bulls to win on the road in Dallas when the schedule was released. Finishing the month at 7-7, 6-8, and making up some ground in December is my hope. This team needs some time to gel. I agree. It's just frustrating to watch them play so great at times and so horrible at other times. I think the lack of consistency stems from not having an inside prescence offensively nor a player who can drive to the hoop and draw fouls consistently. Because they lack both of these things, it gets tough to score at times. If the jumpers aren't falling, they're dead. I'm not going to say we need to make a trade already, but it may be necessary if we want to go deep into the playoffs.
  13. Im disappointed that Drew isn't on Hendry's radar. He seems awfully set on Soriano. I guess I could live with Soriano at CF, although I would prefer Drew. If he really wants Soriano he better go all out and get him signed ASAP.
  14. Post All Star Murton: .319/.390/.522 (.911OPS) CLee: .311/.358/.512 (.870 OPS) Soriano: .283/.367/.572 (.940 OPS)
  15. That seems more like something I'd rather do. Although I'd imagine they'd have no desire for a 3B. They have Atkins there already and have Ian Stewart coming up. I think Pie would have to be included. How about Pie, JJ, and a prospect for Jennings and Hawpe? As I said, I do not include Pie in a trade for Jennings. Jennings is not worth Pie. Even if you're getting rid of JJ and getting back Brad Hawpe (.966 OPS on the road last year)? You could sign JD Drew for CF (hopefully) and still have money to get another starter and another hitter. If you get a CF, Pie becomes expendable. I'm a little worried about Hawpe's second half numbers going down, but they were still alright (.820 OPS). I'd like an OF of Murton, Drew, Hawpe. Good production at a relatively low cost.
  16. Garcia is an average starter that is way overpaid. We could sign Lilly or Padilla for less (in money per year) and probably get similar or better production. Prior has little trade value, which is why we SHOULDNT trade him. He's still young and could rebound. I don't want to give up on him so quick.

  18. Somewhat surprising, but comforting, as I'd rather have Big Murt out-produce him for the league minimum again. How did Murton outproduce Carlos Lee? Not saying I want Carlos Lee, because I don't, and I really like the idea of having Murton at league minimum, but in what way did Murton outproduce Lee? Check post all star splits. Oh, okay. I was just wondering how that statement was made. I feel the need to make it clear that in no way was I implying that Murton isn't the better option. He is a much better option BY FAR. I just didn't realize Murton had that good of a second half.

  20. Career ERA+ of 103 is very similar to some guys who are going to cost $10+ million this offseason. I'm not a huge Pie fan, and believe his biggest value to the Cubs is in trade value, while he's relatively young. I wouldn't include the Cubs best pitcher prospects, but it's not like they have any sure thing pitching studs who absolutely can't be traded. Yeah, I guess I can see that. I just think there are better options available. Pie's second half last year was very good and he's still kinda young for AAA. I still have faith in him becoming a solid everyday CF. I would consider trading him straight up for Jennings, but I wouldnt trade Pie and Marmol. I'd also rather trade young relievers for Jake Westbrook, which was discussed in another thread. What's Jennings contract look like, anyways? EDIT: I see he's a FA next year...what's he due to make this year?
  21. I thought Westbrook was a strong candidate to become a Hendry target. 3 straight years of 200+ innings, and below average to very good effectiveness during those innings. I don't believe he's a free agent until after 2008, but he'll make a lot in arbitration following this season. And I'm deathly afraid he'd trade Matt Murton for Westbrook then sign Carlos Lee. He said the Cubs would be trading young bull pen arms for Westbrook which "was the one commodity they had to trade." Also said Lilly was looking for 4/36. Please dont trade Michael Wuertz! Give them anyone else, but hold on to Wuertz, please. Wuertz for Westbrook done deal! Yeah, I'd do it too, but I'd much rather give up any of our other bullpen arms.
  22. Why do people want to give up so much for Jennings? Pie AND a pitching prospect? He had a very good 2006 season, but what about before that? In 2005 and 2004 his road ERA was still near 5. Was 2006 his breakout year or was it a career year? He's somewhat young (28 ) but I wouldn't be so quick to trade Pie and then some for him.

  24. Durham and Westbrook would be good. We still need a top of the rotation starter and JD Drew, though. At least if we want a real shot at contending.
  25. Crazy idea, but how about DLee and Izturis (I know he sucks but he has some weird perceived value in the GM baseball world) for Bonderman and prospects. I'd like to get Cameron Maybin, but I doubt that would happen. Maybe they'll give us Granderson? I doubt that too. Humberto Sancehz would have been good to be included if they didn't trade him for Sheff. Then try to sign Nomar to play 1b. Immediately sign Bonderman to a contract extension and sign JD Drew for CF and trade for Burrell for RF. Not sure I want to give up Lee but we need a starter and that's one way to acquire a legit ace. EDIT: I know there's no way this would ever happen. DLee will definitely not be traded this offseason. Just trying to think of a way to get a solid #2 starter in here.
