Well, The Bulls only had a 1.6% shot at the #1 pick, so surely theres some chance that the Padres can get a win tonight.

Demp with a slight scare early on, but got out unscathed. So do the Bulls go with Rose, and part ways with Gordon or Deng or go with the biger Beasley, which the Bulls have needed for a while now. I guess we wont know until they have a head coach.

On paper it was the best deal ever. We gave up nothing we needed, and got surely the final piece to that elusive World Championship. Obviously, thats not the way it turned out, but it was a great moment just the same. On the plus side, nobody we gave up went on to do anything spectacular. Alex Gonzalez is out of the league, and as far as I know, Frances Beltran is still touring the AAA circuit. Brendan Harris is doing OK for himself, but not enough that he'll be missed.

OK, late '90's-present. Except the oldest signing you have on here is from 2001 (DeShields...who is a huge stretch to be called a star). The Cubs have done this for their entire history, players like Rick Aguilera in 1999 all the way back to guys like Rogers Hornsby and Dizzy Dean in the 30's. Rajah and Dizzy played several years for the Cubs. They were more Mike Morgan/Henry Rodriguez types. Jimmy Foxx would be more properly lumped with this group. So there's a timeframe in terms of how long they play for the team? Good God. I dont know what Dizzy Dean or Rogers Hornsby did for the Cubs. I dont know the circumstances behind the aquisitions. Aside from Nomar, these are guys who played for the Cubs for 1 year, 2 years max. This is recent memory. add Benito Santiago, Jeff Blauser, whoever.

He never made it passed spring training. Just another stop on his mission to wear every major league uniform at least once. Didn't realize Spring Training went all the way through April 23 in 1999. I didnt even realize that. I gues he made no impact. In my defense, I was going to college in Wisconsin at the time, and didnt have much access to Cubs TV. However, I do remember watching the Wood game in a room full of Cubs haters.

This is a list of players aquired to fill a short term need, and YES, these were fairly big names. In each case, the Cubs could have just as easily promoted someone from the farm to fill the need, but since there were available proven, above average veterans, they decided to go for them, if not to give them a better chance at winning, to make the fans think they were. Every one of those players experienced some degree of long term success in the majors, but for most, there best days were well behind them by the tim we got them. Aside from Nomar, and maybe McGriff, none of these guys will ever make it to Cooperstown, but the aquisitions were all with a similar motive. Its not like Im lumping Ben Grieve and Kal Daniels in there.

This is more like a list of names LLF remembers playing with the Cubs for brief periods of time since he started following the team than a list of one time star players. Ive been following the team none stop since 1984 when I was 8, and going to games since I was 5, thank you. These are (one time) star players who had a short, often unremarkable stint with the team. Sure, there have been more in the past, but it wasnt really until the Sosa years where the started the trend of aquiring fairly big names to help out for short periods of time. Most of those names are nowhere near being "fairly big." http://www.tadbit.com/hosted_imgs/you_fail_011.jpg By the time they got the Cubs, no, but if your going to say that McGriff, Burnitz, Edmonds, Garciaparra, Lofton, White, and Nevin werent at least fairly big names in their primes, you dont know half as much as you think you do, but then again, there are Harvard professors who dont know half as much as you think you do.
