  1. You do realize that we slapped CC around when we faced him dont you?
  2. According to Steve Phillips, it would be 2 years, 12-14 million. Really? We can't pay that? Skip the Peavy garbage, re-sign Woody, sign Bradley and call it a day. Seriously? Sounds like if we didnt re sign Dempster, we could have had all of the above. But then again, since the Cardinals signed a career mediocre at best pitcher who happened to have a career year to a massive contract, we had to do the same.
  3. If todays anything like every other day, during the afternoon, talks will be slow with conflicting reports coming out of Vegas, in the evening, it will heat up with an imminant deal, and by morning no progress will have been made.
  4. I guess Ive had enough rampant, conflictive speculation for one day. I guess we'll see what tomorow brings. Probably more of the same, but you never know.
  5. At the time, the Peavy talks were in limbo. Still, there was no need to jump on it as fast as Jim did. Every other free agent pitcher is still avaialble, so theres no reason to believe that Demp wouldnt be.
  6. http://www.sportsline.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6270335/12196843 Sounds like Towers is calling Hendry out. Seriously, I refuse to belive that this deal would be blocked over a matter of 5 million dollars.
  7. Definitelty. Towers is doing his best to make sure everyone out there knows that hes doing what he can to make this happen, and if it falls through, its Hendrys fult and not his.
  8. this is why i've been saying that i'm worried about hendry and lou's obsession with adding a pricy lh bat like ibanez/abreu. to add one of those guys and peavy, he pretty much has to trade marquis. i think he's worried about the possibility of trading for peavy, getting stuck with marquis, and then not having enough money to get that bat. I know that's what he's worried about and I think it's stupid. If he could get rid of Sammy Sosa and Todd Hundley, he can get rid of Jason Marquis. If you want to get rid of someone enough, you can do it. Hendry has proven it himself. if somebody like raul ibanez ends up costing the cubs peavy this would be the most disastrous offseason ever Agreed. If Lou really is willing to throw away one of the best pitchers in the game over an aging outfielder who will probably be broken down by the last year of his contract, he deserves to have his MOY award revoked. You mean Hendry and his EOY award? Lou is the one demanding the LH bat, and its not like any of the avilable are steller. I know Hendry is the one who makes the decision, but Im sure Lou has some say in the matter.

  10. The problem is if Hendry is actually trying to get something in return for Marquis. Every GM out there must know that hes trying to dump his salary, so why would they give him anything for him? Marquis is a solid end of the rotation starter, worth the 5 mil a year a team would end up paying him, especially with all of the pitching starved teams out there. If it were possible to make the deal now, and then move Marquis once the free agent pitchers start signing, hed probably have better luck.
  11. So I guess its safe to say that if we didnt do the Dempster deal this would be a done deal by now. If this deal doesnt go down, Dempster better have 4 amazing years. Seriously, the fact that every other free agent pitcher is still out there suggests that Jim could have afforded to wait a bit on the Demp deal. No, I don't think that's safe to say. Why would Hendry agree to something now and not see if he can whittle him down over the next two days? He isn't competing against any other teams in these negotiations, and time is on his side. Does everyone want Hendry to give up more than he has to just so we can have Peavy on the roster a couple of extra post-season days? If the reason that theyre having trouble closing this is due to money, particularly 5 million dollars, than yes, if we hadnt given Dempster 10 mil a year or whatever, there wouldnt be a problem here.

  13. I could see towers and hendry tripping on shrooms while going to see cirque du soleil to discuss this deal. "The tall chair is gawking at me and the short one is behaving very droll!" Maybe the holdup is the Cubs getting another player back in the deal. Remember when Minnesota expected to get Murton in the Nomar deal? Maybe Towers sees someone he likes in the Rule V draft and wants to make sure that he has roster space. That's unlikely. He's looking to receive a large number of players that almost all would need placed on the 40 man immediately. If he wants somebody in the rule 5, he's already got a roster crunch... waiting wont help. But on the other side of the page, youd think that Hendry would want it done before the draft, as Im assuming that theyre will be at least 3 spaces opened up on our 40 man, and he could chose to pretect a few more guys.
  14. I'll believe it when Peavy is holding up his new jersey at a press conference,
  15. If this is for reals, my miserble almost 2 hour commute on a road of snow of ice that I just finished could be all gone and forgotten. I purposely didnt turn on any radio on the way home because I was hoping for a pleasant surprise when I got home.
  16. Towers has said that it's all up to Jim now from his quotes yesterday and today, What's keeping him from pulling the trigger and being hesitant? Towers seems to want to get this done asap. Usually Hendry is real quick when it comes to getting a caliber player such as Peavy. Im guessing DeRosa is whats holding it up. All of the other players are name that have been tossed around since day one. Seriously, if we can get Peavy, and then land Abreu, Bradley, or even Ibanez, DeRosa wont be missed.
  17. I think he means the Zambrano extension signing Oh, that. It was similar. All season long, there were talks, and then it was tabled, and then silence, and then I remember listening to a game on the radio fairly late in the season, and they announced the extension. You forgot Jason Kendall. Boy was that trade a surprise. Kevin Gregg, Cotts for Aardsma, Barrett to SD, etc etc. I can't remember a deal that was rumored for awhile that eventually got done. I guess the Harden trade was reported before it went down, but when it actually went down, because of the timing everyone expected it to be a deadline deal if at all, it came as a huge shock to me. I guess you do have a point there. I remember being mildly excited about the Kendall deal, never imagining the legacy hed ultimately leave behing. Gregg had actually been rumored to the Cubs, among other teams, I just never expected it when it happened. The Cotts for Aardsma was pretty minor.

  19. Basically my long winded way of saying just because were in the dark doesnt mean something isnt happening behind closed doors.
  20. http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/12/peavy_talks_slowing.html Basically same report we been hearing all day from the Cubs sources. But Towers comments kinda said otherwise. I would assume that Towers has a better idea of whats going on than any of the sports writers, unless hes purposely trying to make it clear to everyone around these hes trying to make this happen, and if it doesnt, hes not the one to blame.
  21. One thing about Hendry-he can strike when you least expect it. I remember hearing rumors about Harden, and that it would happen around the trade dealine, and then bam, all of the sudden I remember turning on the news and them talking about Sean Gallagher packing his bags for Oakland. Same with Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Nomar, and Zambrano. Sometimes, after not hearing much, big trades and signings are completed suddenly and without warning.
  22. Id definitely hate to be any water cooler that foolishly wandered into that room.
