  1. Bradleys just an all around good player. Hes not the guy whose going to take a bad team and make them decent, or a good tram and make them great, but he is the type of player who you can put on an already great team and plug up a huge, obvious hole, and can hopefully be that piece weve been looking for, and that would be worth a 2 or 3 year deal, hopefully with incentives.
  2. Soriano is far from perfect out there, but he's not nearly as bad as you're painting him to be. He's got speed and good range and has a pretty good arm. He just gets bad jumps and doesn't always take the best routes. He's at least slightly above-average out there. Soriano is pretty solid, witha great arm. Its just that he made some particualrly memorable, mind bogglingly awful plays that people peg him as a horid fielder.
  3. Nothing against Johnson, I like hime a lot, but would an outfield of Soriano, Fukudome/Pie, Bradley have sufficed? I know it's a lot of leftys in there, but we have enough right handed bats througout the lineup. I guess the main problem there would be that we wouldnt have a quality righty bat off the bench, with Hoffpauir, Fontenot and Fukudome/Pie as the first lines of defense. Had we non tendered Johnson and Cotts, that would likely have freed up enough money to go ahead with Bradley.
  4. Strong rookie year, strong decline ever since 2005 .282/.372/.534 2006 .216/.325/.431 2007 .244/.322/.460 2008 .182/.282/.383 (77 games)
  5. I wouldnt mind signing Chris Capuano cheap. Jim Hendry seems to live signing pitchers coming off injury who wont be ready until late-mid season at earliest. It worked with Ryan Demoster. However, Scott Williamson, Wade Miller, and Chad Fox, not so much. If Capuano can ever go back to being close to what he once was, hed be worth a 1 million dollar risk. Daniel Cabrera would be a nice signing, but Im sure theres a line forming by teams in need of starting pitching a lot more than we do. Ty Wiggington is a surprising one. We have no use for him, but Im surprised they didnt use him as a trading chip.
  6. No, but I'm sure it would be one with an option or maybe two with an option. I'm not sure how far along they are in the talks, but I'm told he's definitely their No. 1 choice for OF. Thanks, sounds good. 2 with an option sounds about right to me. Is a possible Bradley signing something we could expect to hear any time soon, or will it take time?
  7. I dont really care much about Cotts either way, however, when you're trying to unload aboutn5 million in salary, I dont see the point of throwing 1.1 at a guy who could probably be replaced from within. Papelbon or Piggy fill the same spot easily.
  8. Of course not but if you're a Padres fan, the blame rests with the owner, not the GM. Towers doesn't seem to be playing the cards he's been dealt real well here, but let's not lose sight of the fact that the cards were crappy to begin with. It dosnt sound like the fans enter into it. Its about the Padres as a company downsizing and rebuilding with cheaper labor. Towers wasnt in a position in which making the fans happy was an option.
  9. If Marquis is the problem, heres an idea: With Sabathia, Burnett, and Wang, the Yanks have one hell of a top 3. However, assuming Pettite doesnt re sign, and they keep Joba in the pen, unless they trust Kennedy and Hughes, they'll need 1, maybe 2 more starters. With all the money they're throwing CC and AJ, they could use something cheap. Now Im assuming that even Oliver Perez will be asking for 10 million, and Lowe and Sheets a lot more. At about 5 mil, Marquis would be a hell of a bargain to him. Sure, theres the chance that he'll get man handles in the NL, especially the East, but if they want a cheap option to fill the rotation, there you go. Now we just have to figure out who to replace Harden when he gets injured or extended time off.
  10. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081212&content_id=3715349&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc This doesnt quite add up. According to this article they still have to move Marquis contract to get Bradley. Why would they have to fre up the same amount of money to only sign Bradley that we would have had to to make the Peavy deal AND sign a bat? Youd think with the Peavy deal dead, Jim would be free to go ahead and get Bradley.
  11. Please tell me that Sean Marshall wasnt one of the main obstacles in this deal? While I can see Hendry not wanting let let DeRosa go, I would give up Marshall for Peavy in a heartbeat.
  12. He can barely play left. Strictly DH material.
  13. He could be a very nice fit in Phillies lineup, however, I can see them desperately scrabling to trade him next year. This makes me happy because not only is he off the market, but with one of his potential targets down, it puts some pressure on Hendry to go out and get Dunn or Bradley.
  14. At this point, I really dont see the point in moving Marquis. With the Peavy deal dead, we dont need to move the salary anymore even if we do want a bat. ,love or hate him, OK, hate him or hate him less, as I doubt anyone really loves him, we may very well need him. Even if the do project a Z/Harden/Lilly/Demp/Marshall rotation, we all know that even if Harden manages to go un injuredm they will want to keep him ina glass case, and skip his spot when possible. Thats when you need that extra starter, and theres no point in moving half of Marquis money when you'll have to then turn around and sign a guy for the same amount or more. Of course there is....Rich Hill
  15. I get the impression that hes just unhappy with San Diego. He really wanted to be a Cub, but if thats not an option, he'll start at least entertaining other teams. I think he just doesnt like the direction the Padres are headed, and wants to be with a winner.
  16. The Reds feel they owe us for Josh Hamilton...... Does he have to stick all year ? Yes he does or we need to offer him back. Judging by his minor league stats, I dont see him sticking around for any length of time.
  17. Should he still trade him for that Garrett Olson guy? His stats dont look all that impressive, but if the Padres wanted him that bad, he must have some upsode. I have nothing against Pie, and wouldnt mind giving him a shot, but unless there is a Fukudome trade in the works, its pretty clear that as soon as Hendry finds his lefty, Pies future with the organization officially comes to an end. Personally, I dont see why we cant just go ahead with a 3 headed monster with Fukudome, Johnson, and Pie in CF and RF. Even if it doesnt work out, the team as a whole is good enough that we could at least let it ride for the first few months, and if it isnt working, make a deal before the deadline.
  18. In my opinion, Vitters, Marshall, Pie, Cedeno/Theriot, and maybe a lower level prospect or 2 plus getting Peavys contract off the books, which was the main objective should have been more than enough to get the deal done. Now there stuck with an angry ace with a big contract.
  19. http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/hot_stove/posts/31661-agent-peavy-frustrated-with-padres WOW. That tells me Jake really wants to be a Cub. He could force Towers hand here. I like it. When you have a guy making that much, who has essentially made it clear that hes miserable on the team, you really need to get a deal of some kind done. I really dont see him on the Badres come spring training.
  20. I didn't want Ibanez at all. But if the Rays can convince Bradley to go there, the Phillies get Ibanez, the White Sox get Abreu, does that leave us Dunn? I know the Rays are the flavor of the month, but if given similar offers, I cant see Bradley chosing the Rays over the Cubs. You never know what the season will bring, but Im guessing that the Rays had their chance, and the Yanks and Sawx are going to resume their dominance over the division. Id be guessing you are pretty wrong. Tampas season wasnt a fluke. I wouldnt call it a fluke, but will they still be good enough to compete now that the powerhouses are retooling?
  21. I saw this article title on mlb.com and thought it said Bradley headed to Cubs. Stupid MLB.com.

  23. With the Peavy thing dead in the water, we may as well just get Bradley and call it an off season. I highly doubt we have a shot at Furcal, and theres really nothing else we need. Projected opening day roster LF Soriano SS Theriot 3B Ramirez C Soto RF Bradley 1B Lee 2B DeRosa CF Fukudome Bench-Fontenot Bench-Johnson Bench-Cedeno Bench-Hoffpauir/Pie Bench-Koyie Hill SP Zambrano SP Harden SP Lilly SP Dempster SP Marquis BP Marshall BP Wuertz BP Gaudin BP Gregg BP-Shark BP Cotts CL Marmol That doesnt look bad by any stretch. Certainly better than anything else in the NL. Hopefully they can play that way come October :D
  24. Outside of risk of injury, Johnson would probably be better than Marquis. Only when he faces the Cubs.
  25. Im not buying all the leverage talk. The deals dead for all practical purposes. The one glimmer of hope is remembering the 2006 off season when Ramirez was for sure skipping town, and then out of nowhere, Hendry got him back. Lets just re title this thread R.I.P. Peavy to Cubs and get on with our lives. I never want to hear or read the words Peavy, Towers, or Imminent again.
