    Simply pathetic. Good thing Lous lefty killer lineup came through. Just bring up Castro and trade Theriot for a good reliever. or a decent releiver. or a bad reliever. I really dont care anymore. Im sick of looking at the guy. Marlon Byrd was the one bright spot, besides Wells being his usual solid self. Then again, it doesnt matter how often your lead off hitter gets on base when the rest of the "offense" cant do anything about it.

    Take out Wright and Bay, and that is 1 hell of a craptastic lineup. Then again, it just 2 more good hitters than the Astros had, and we all know how that turned out.

    I know. Unfortunately, Baker and Fontenot currently have the two best batting averages on the Cubs at the moment. I'm not a huge proponent of bringing up Castro anytime soon, but Theriot's a lot more vulnerable than either of those guys right now. Of course, that could all change in a week or so. Baker and Font really dont have anything to worry about from Scales, whose major league ceiling is as a utlity man. However, if Chad Tracy keeps doing his best Aaron Miles impression,, and Scales keeps up what hes doing, that might be a possibility. As I recall, Scales was able to play 2B, 3B, and a bit of outfield, maybe even SS, and as long as Nady can play the occasional 1B, Tracy is made obsolete if he cant hit his way out of a wet paper bag. Also, Scales is a switch hitter. I am rooting for Tracy, but lets face it, last time he was a serviceable major leaguer was in 2006.

    That's my feeling, too. It's early, but you're already seeing pretty significant improvements from Soto and 2B compared to the slog of last year. I think the key right now is Aramis. I'm optimistic that this is this the early season rust we've seen him display before. The key is going to be getting Aramis going. Traditionally, hes a hot starter, and hes a huge cog in the Cubs offense. I just hope that if/when the offense really gets going, we still get the kind of starting pitching performances weve been getting. Dempsters now had 2 absolute gems wasted, and I dont know how long Silva(league leading 0.615 WHIP, 0 HR or BB allowed) and Gorzolanny will be able to keep up what they've been doing. On the plus side, I didnt realise that Soto had pushed his average to .308 with an OPS over .900. Why does Lou keep pulling him for defense? It not like this is Michael Barrett were talking about.

    Teams would be willing to give more for Bell because of the closer tag, but the Padres would be much less willing to deal Adams. He's not going to get huge raises in arbitration because he doesn't have saves so he's not likely to become too pricey for the Padres, especially if he stays as effective as he's been. I just don't see the incentive for the Padres to deal Adams unless they get a great deal, they do have incentive to trade Bell. While unlike Bell, Adams isnt a guy that the Pads would actively shop, however, if approached about him with a decent deal, Im sure theyd be willing to part with him.

    Maybe its just time to accept that were just a middle of the pack team in a bad division. The only way that anybody will come close to competing with the Cards is if Pujols or Holliday go down for an extended period of time.

    Looks like Bobby Scales is campaigning to be 2010s 2008 Micah Hoffpauir/2009 Jake Fox. Im rooting for ya little guy. He finally got a taste of that coffee and he wants more.

    Not to mention he isn't a closer and his perceived value will be lower because he doesn't have a high number of career saves. He's very cheap and productive, though, and that combination is very important to a team like the Padres. I actually think we could get Bell for a better deal than Adams, especially if we took all of Bell's contract. That said, I would have no problem trading for Heath Bell as long as we don't overpay. As has been said, Hendry has almost always been very good at making trades work for us. Is Nolasco the best player we've traded away? I doubt that. Bell is an established major league closer, and lot of teams would give up a lot for him. As for Adams, hes a 30 something and arb eligable, and the Pads may not be in the position to give a guy like that a raise. He does the same thing year after year and never genertes much interest from other teams. We could probably get him for what we got Grabow for last year. 1 major league ready player, and 1 low level solid, but not top prospect. Just to throw out names, we could probably get him for say Caridad and Tony Thomas.

    Was Hung Wen Chen ever a guy worth following? I remember hearing his name when we first got him, but last year he was pretty bad. Seems off to a good start this year.

    Koronkas all the way back in AA? Hes got to be at least 30 by now.

    Hednry wouldnt give up Vitters for Peavy when we were a legit contender. I doubt he'll move him for Bell now that were not. besides, we didnt give up anything of real value for Nomar, Aramis, Harden, or D Lee. The one thing Hendry seems to be good at is trades. If were going to deal with the Pads, go for Mike Adams. The guys been quietly consitant for years now. Hes cheap and effective, so wed probably have to give up something, but surely none of our top prospects.

    Smokies are getting smoked 11-4, but Castro is 2-2 with a 2B and an RBI In Iowa, Casey Colemans given up 1ER with 2K through 4.

    Im not going to lie, one of my guilty pleasures is to tune into a Sox game when they're losing and listen to Hawk grumble. Its basically as though some fan boy managed to make his way into the announce booth. Then again, if I were a non Cubs fan, Id probably feel the same way about Ron Santo.

    I wouldnt. Sadly, Lou would probably use Chad Tracy as a set up man over Marshall, but Looper would probably be better than any of the other.

    While I will give Silva the benefit of the doubt that he can be a solid back of the rotation guy, I really dont see him continuing to do what hes been doing. Even at his best, in the Twins years he was a middle of the rotation type of guy. I have no doubt that Rothschild helped him out with his mechanics, but I doubt he turned him into an ace. If Gorz has another outing tomorrow like his first one, were going to have a good problem when Lilly comes back.

    When you have a bullpen full of guys who need to be put into some low leverage situations, when you have a 5 run lead, which has been scarce this season, I really dont see why you would use your closer in that situation. While I have Samardjiza chalked up as a lost cause, Gray and Berg really could have used the work there. If they got into any trouble, surely Marmol could have steeped in and shut down the Astros sickly offense.

    MLBTR was discussing Looper, who I had forgotten existed. While he was never very good as a starter, he did have a lot of success as a reliever for several years before making the conversion. I recall him saying he would like to play for the Cubs in the offseason. If he would be willing to accept something like a mil for the remainder of the season as a set up man, would he be worth it? It would be better than giving up any solid prospects for someone like Scott Downs when we really need a righty anyway.
