  1. Interesting choice. Man, I could have sworn Hatley was in his late 20's, but he's only 23.
  2. Why do people refuse to acknowledge that BJ Upton has been bad for 3 years now? He's 27, and to be honest, if Colvin were to play a full season as a full time player, his numbers would likely look very similar to Uptons the past 3 years. Yeah, I'd give Upton a chance, but I damn sure wouldn't give up multiple top prospects for him. I wouldn't use Colvin as a a throw in, I'd build a package around Colvin and maybe Barney if they wanted and a few mid level prospects. My offer would look something like Colvin, Barney, Dolis, and maybe kick them a few older prospects like we did with the Garza trade if they send us something else as well. If they insisted, I'd replace one of the others with someone along the lines of a Watkins/Lake/Gonzalez, but that's about it.
  3. Shouldn't they be sending some of th guys who need it more like Szczur, Cabrera, and Jay Jackson?
  4. Not much going on. So far, the Phillies landed Pirates AAAA player John Bowker and The Braves re-aquired Matt Diaz of the <.650 OPS, also from the Pirates. I doubt that Bush has the authority to pull the trigger on any big moves, but I wonder if their dangling guys like Johnson, Baker, and DeWitt.
  5. So what time is the deadline today? I could see some of the veterans who have cleared waivers like Matsui, Damon, and Harang being moved around today. Hopefully The Cubs move a few.
  6. Problem with Hoilman is that he's already 22 and will have to move through the system pretty quickly to make it anywhere by that magic age of 25.
  7. The most famous baseball fat guy of all was OPSng over 1.000 well into his 30's.
  8. Even when Mo was in his early 30s, he was OPSng in the 800s and hitting near 30 HR. I'll definitely take that in the final years of a 6-7 year contract. in that offensive environment it wasn't all that impressive - 119 ops+ at age 31 and 115 ops+ at age 32. i sure as hell don't want to be paying a lousy defensive 1b $20m a year to put up lyle overbay-type production. If he he can be an elite heart of the order hitter for the first 4-5 years, and help us to a championship or 2, I'll take it. That's the risk you're going to take when giving a guy that long of a contract.

  10. (a) he's 34 years old and his ERA should be over a run higher than it is. (b) matt kemp, jordan zimmermann, carlos beltran, etc But even then his ERA would be 3.54, which is damn good for a guy whose been out of the big leagues for 5 years.
  11. They're not going to give Prince Fielder the kind of money he'll be getting to play DH/part time 1B. He's a 1B, and those teams that don't need 1B will be in rumors simply to raise the price. correct. the Yankees will spend their money on pitching. the Angels have plenty of bats to fill 1B and DH. Fielder isn't bumping A-Gon in Boston This being the case, as I've been saying, The Cubs are essentially the top teams for both Fielder and Pujols, so if they're ready to spemdn the money, one of them should be ours. Again, it's not just a "win now" move, it's more of a cornerstone in a 2-3 year process that should bring the Cubs back to being the NL superpower they were supposed to be all through the '00s.
  12. Another guy I'd like to see do something in the fall is Michael Burgess. He's only 22, and I'm not quite ready to give up on him.
  13. I'm also a bit surprised that Vitters isn't in on the AFL.
  14. Looks like that little win streak we had a few weeks ago cost us big. Nobodies catching the Astros anyway. They're the '27 Yankees of the Fecal League.
  15. Why no Vogelbach or Maples?
  16. Lets assume that we lock in Garza for a while, and sign C.J. Wilson. In 2013, Matt Cain, John Danks, Zack Greinke, Sean Marcum, and maybe but doubtfully Cole Hammels will hit the market. Assuming we go for 1 of those guys, I'd just as soon let Dempster walk after 2012 and fill the other 2 rotation spots from within. Between Cashner, McNutt, Jackson, and Struck, I think this would be a more than sufficent rotation.
  17. They'll have to raise payroll then, because they don't have any payroll of significance available. Possible, especially since they'll have playoff revenue in some quantity, but far from a guarantee. And even then, you're talking about replacing someone of Fielder's quality just to get back to square one. How do we explain the fact that they've been trying to extend Fielder (or at least have publicly stated as much)? The notion that Fielder's money is already spent surely doesn't jive with that part. Keep in mind, Fielder is a Boras client, and even if the Brewers are able to somewhat expand payroll, he will hit the open market, and if teams like the Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels show interest, they'll ultimately price the Brewers out, especially considering the marketability in one of those cities. The Brewers only real shot it if the big market teams all stay out of the bidding. the Yankees, Red Sox and Angels don't need a 1B No, but they could always use a DH. Prince will definitely hit the market, Boras will make sure of it. Teams will be interested, and will offer a large amount of money. If the Brewers want to stay in the bidding, they won't be able to do the type of team friendly contract they have Braun and Gallardo on.
  18. Wasn't Hochever supposed to have won multiple CY Young awards by now? Great example of how massive hype doesn't always mean big league success.

  20. Yes, Barney is the better defender there. But he shouldn't be in a major league starting lineup, so this is meaningless. I think that in a good enough lineup, Barney could be a solid 8 hitter, however, I think that both Flaherty and LeMahieu should be better offensive options in the long run relagating Barney to the bench. My guess is that Barney will have a nice 10-12 year big league career between 6-7 teams.

Possible, especially since they'll have playoff revenue in some quantity, but far from a guarantee. And even then, you're talking about replacing someone of Fielder's quality just to get back to square one. I think that Gamel's the heir apparent for Fielder. They should contend next year without him on pitching if nothing else, but after that, they'll have to decide between Greinke, Marcum, and Wolf to join Gallardo in the rotation. After that, I don't like they're chances unless they get lucky with some prospects. I know they have one pitching prospect whose supposed to be pretty good.
  22. I prefer the stance that there will be an open battle between Pujols and Fielder for the open Cubs 1b job, with the loser manning RF instead. This playing the cards close to the vest game is over. Long live Hendry, somewhere else. I say Fielder in LF, with Pujols at 1B, but give him some reps at 3rd so we can move him there when we sign Votto in '13.
  23. Now if you ever want to get real drunk for real cheap and you don't care what it tastes like or what you're putting in your body, Mad Dog 20/20s the way to go. Some people will call it a "chick drink" because of the color and flavors, but that stuff does not mess around. I remember that stuff from my college days.
  24. IIRC, Pawalek was a top 10 talent who fell because of signability. If he had been drafted where he should have been, I wonder who was next on our board. Assuming they had their heart set on a LHP, it could have been Aaron Thompson (22, Marlins) or Brian Bogusevic (24, Astros). Thompsons just 24 now, and made his big league debut with the Pirates this season. Bogusevic is 27 and since been converted to an OF. He has a .299/.361/.515/.877 line in 64 games/109 PA this year. Neither exactly make me go Oh, what could have been.
  25. Wow, looks like Vogelsong may very well be for real. He's got to be the NL Comeback Player of the Year.
