  1. I have to say, you might be on to something here. However, I think that any value that Tyler Colvin might have had this time last year has completely dried up, and wed probably have to send them a better young player like Wellington Castillo or Darwin Barney and hopefully, a little less cash, something like 15-17 mil, and maybe get a fringe prospect or 2 as well in the deal. This then gives us the freedom to move Marlon Byrd, or even Soriano if there are any takers.
  2. I would love that. Even if we miss out on Epstein, this means Ricketts is ready to spend. I'm sure he knows that if Epstein were to jump ship, it wouldnt be to spend 4-5 years building a team, it would be to build a winner in the next year or 2. Probably similar to the '06/'07 offseason with better decisions. And I wonder how much resistance that the Red Sox would even put up. They already have a team built to win now and the next several years, and if Epstein left town, they already have his heir apparent in Cherington. Even if he wasn't their guy, they'd still have their pick of the litter to replace him. Damn you not so cautious optimism.
  3. If the Cubs keep him on their 40 man roster than he'll be under team control this winter. I can't quickly find if he used all his options with the Mariners (he used at least two) so I'm not sure if the Cubs would have the ability to option him to the minors next year or not or if he would have to stick on the major league roster. Thanks. I don't think that an option would be necessary for LaHair. If on the team, hopefully he'd be a backup, and it wouldn't take them that long to decide if he's going to stick. If not, Bryan LaHairs are plentiful throughout AAA.
  4. Just out of curiosity, how does contract status work for guys like LaHair? Is he automatically a free agent, or a minor league free agent, or is he under team control?
  5. Theres only one that matters: Rodrigo Lopez Sucks Go Cubs!
  6. And that was before last night...now LaHair is at .500/.565/.950. All kidding aside though, if the Cubs like his bat I think they have the luxury of keeping him on their bench next year. With Barney starting at 2nd, that makes keeping another backup SS unnecessary. Baker and DeWitt can backup pretty much every position besides SS, C, and CF. So you have a backup C, a backup CF (that could be Colvin, Campana, or a free agent), Baker, DeWitt, and that still leaves one bench spot. There's no real need for that to be another defensive backup so the Cubs can afford to put a bat in that spot, and if they think LaHair can put up a .750+ OPS he could be it. Cubs lineup next year if @thekapman created it: Castro SS Barney 2B LaHair 1B Byrd CF Colvin RF LeMahieu 3B Jackson LF Soto C I'm pretty sure that team would lose 100 games. Only about 85 losses with the Phillies pitching staff. There's no way Kaplan wouldn't have Campana in CF instead of Byrd. Soto would have been traded and Koyie Hill would be the starting C and 3 hitter with Chris Robinson as his backup.
  7. Whichever takes the division, I wish them the same luck that the last 4 NL Central representatives had in the playoffs.
  8. He was too busy tying young maidens to train tracks. I really want Kenney to grow a handlebar mustache now. It would look great with his top hat and cape. I actually found a recent photo of him when he learned of Ricketts plans to hire a new GM. http://www.comicartcollective.com/artImages/97DDEBBC-3048-77F0-11B9E76962571E40.jpg Rumor has it, that Kenney has been pushing Ricketts to hire this guy as the new GM http://nova100.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341c684553ef0134892be64a970c-800wi
  9. Now what if they did decide to re-up both Ramirez and Pena? Granted, Fielders still my choice by a long shot, but if we re sign those 2, and then sign Jose Reyes, assuming he'd make the switch to 2B, would Jackson Castro Ramirez Pena Reyes Byrd Soriano Soto Really be the worst lineup? Again, I'd really prefer Fielder, or Pujols, who I still see as a pipe dream, but if we went this route, we then go after Kemp or Ethier to replace Byrd the next year. However, theres always the chance that Reyes would want similar money to Fielder or Pujols, in which case it doesn't make sense to sign him over Fielder. Again, this isn't my ideal scenario, but if that's the route that the Cubs choose to go, it could be worse. Whatever happens, they need to go out and get at least 1 more productive bat for the lineup.
  10. How dare he accept money for the privilege of playing for the BFIB
  11. I can't believe his ERA coming into today was only 4.78 It seems like every time he takes the mound, he gives up at least 2 runs.
  12. I just hope that Carlos Pena isn't playing his way into a 3 year contract, unless it's with another team.
  13. He certainly didn't inhabit Jake Fox or Tyler Colvin for long. Maybe LaHair will be a more satisfactory host.
  14. LaHairs at the point in his career where he's not playing out this month to earn a starting job, or even a guaranteed bench spot. He's playing to be taken seriously during Spring Training and the chance at a spot on the big league club, which guys like LaHair are never guaranteed no matter what they do in Spring Training.
  15. I take it that tonight The Mets will be Americas Team before going back to being another joke of a franchise tomorrow.
  16. D Cubs up 4-2 going into the bottom of the 7th. Kurcz just relieved Rhee who went 6 giving up 2 ER on 4 H with 3/5 BB/K.
  17. outfield upgrades will have to wait. Even if they plan on spending big, it will be over a few years. I'd prefer to wait until Kemp or Ethier might be available instead of next years weak crop. Remember, between '06 and '08, there was '07, which was just good enough to take an awful division. That's probably the best we can expect from next years team.
  18. Again, IF the plan is to sign Fielder or Pujols, they'll need to save money somewhere. There's no way they can sign one of them, Wilson, and an OF.
  19. Most NL benches consist of 2 infielders, usually a light hitting defensive specialist MI type(ours happens to be our starting 2B), and one who can play 3rd, 1 backup C, and 2 OF, one who can play CF, and one corner guy with a decent bat, who can also spell at 1st. Besides, I really think that either Soriano or Byrd, probably Byrd will be traded in the of season, leaving a corner OF spot open, and I think it will go to either Colvin or LaHair, probably with a RH platoon mate/backup plan.
  20. He does have a place on the MLB roster if he can be a cheap LH power bat. What's the worst that can happen? If he sucks, then send him away and replace him with someone else. The only guy he'd probably take a roster spot from would be Colvin, and I suspect that the 2 will be battling it out for the same job in ST, with the loser going to Iowa. If the Cubs are going to spend big on guys like Wilson and Fielder, LaHair would be a great way to save money as a bench bat. If they don't plan on spending in the offseason, they'll suck anyway, so who the hell cares who the 4th OF is?
  21. How do teams keep signing Miguel Batista? He's like the new Julian Tavarez.
  22. So for the D Cubs, is this THE Championship Series?
  23. I dont know quite what to make of LaHairs OF defense, but if he can finish the season well and have a good ST, he could be a good option for a 4th OF and lefty platoon mate for Soriano and Byrd. He could be another Jake Fox, but then again, he could be another Ryan Ludwick, who was 27 or 28 when he had his breakout season, although he'd had a lot more coffee before that. I'm really not worried about him having a hot month deterring them from going after Fielder or Pujols, because if they decide against those 2, I doubt LaHair or whoever ends up manning 1B next year would be a factor in that decision as much as not wanting to pay them the big bucks.
  24. Do we really need Woody back next year? I think we have enough to pull off a solid bullpen without him with Marmol, Marshall, Shark, Carpenter(when he's done drowning his sorrows in scotch while listening to the Smiths), Russell, Dolis, and Beliveau.
