  1. Yeah, the Pena talk worries me. Look, the guy who will make that decision will be the GM, who has yet to be determined. The Cubs future 1B could be anyone from Carlos Pena to Prince Fielder to Albert Pujols to Casey Kotchman to Bryan LaHair to James Loney. It's one thing to discuss how each option will affect the future of the team, but there's really no point on speculating who is the favorite until the GM is in place.
  2. Lopez is one one of those guys who you prefer get rocked because every time he has a decent outing, it brings us closer to the possibility of him being in rotation next year. All I know if he's in next years rotation with Cashner in the pen, well, that won't be cool.
  3. So does LaHair's awesomeness. If there was a way to fuse them into 1 player and make them 22-23 years old we'd have a top 10 prospect our hands.
  4. No, the link where Ricketts says Z will be traded. I still think this is the best Cubs board around. It was better when Meph was active and before the political BS of '08 sent some of the more conservative members packing, but it's better than listening to the sound of thousands of lips on Al Yellon's ass. I like cookies. And I'm looking forward to the season premier of Modern Family.
  5. First Saddam, then Osama, now Crane. It will take the devil decades to recoup.
  6. I didnt realise he was having a decent season. I thought he was done for. I wonder if even he's heard of most of his team mates.
  7. Considering that most of the Astros players are propects hoping to be in the big leagues next year, I'd say they care very much.
  8. Should the Cubs have the mentality that we should immediately settle because we might get outbid? Assuming we don't decrease payroll (which all of this is based on anyway), we'll have as much as or more than anyone else to spend this offseason. It's certainly no sure thing that we'll get 2 of the top 3 free agents on the market, but I don't think we should throw in the towel without an effort either. Settle? Aramis is the best 3rd baseman in the league and you want to let him walk hoping that some platoon can almost produce at his level and the Cubs can sign 2 of the 3 best FA. Keep Aramis and get Fielder. Have the new GM kiss and make up with Z so they don't have to pay him to play somewhere else and use some minor league chips to get a fifth starter. Ricketts already stated Z will be dealt. No, he said that he can't see Z pitching for the Cubs again, but it will ultimately be up to the GM.
  9. Yeah, some people keep forgetting how atrocious the defense has been. And this team still would have sucked. Nothing wrong with being positive, but thinking this team is only a couple of pieces away from contention isn't at all realistic. Actually, it is. Not "ideally" competitive, but it's certainly realistic they could be competitive next season in a division this weak. Even assuming they grab Fielder, Wilson, and re-sign Ramirez, (which is assuming a hell of a lot) that does nothing to address the defense or mediocre OF production. That team would also need to stay completely healthy as the farm isn't likely to provide us much help in the short term. Too many ifs. It isnt realistc to think that they'll go from where they are now to the top of any division. Again, the key for next year should be to get back to .500 and go from there the following year. Between 2006 and 2008 there was 2007. That's likely next years BCS. The difference is there is better competition then there was then.
  10. There's a big difference between competitve and a favorite to win the divison. I think that if the exact team were trotted out next year and stayed healthy, they would be competive. Probably not the divison favorite, but competitive. This team might have had an entirely different fate had we not had complete trash making up the back end of the rotation for a significant period of time. The term "a couple of pieces" can't be used in a catch all sense. If those pieces were CJ Wilson and Prince Fielder, coupled with the re signing of Ramirez, this team would be very competitive. However, if those pieces were James Loney, Wilson Betemit, and Edwin Jackson, well, whether or not The Astros move to the AL or not would be the deciding factor on whether we finish last or not.
  11. Looking at would should have been the 2011 Cubs: RF Fukudome SS Castro 3B Ramirez 1B Pena CF Byrd LF Soriano C Soto 2B Barney SP Garza SP Demp SP Z SP Wells SP Cashner RP Grabow RP Russel RP Shark RP Stevens/Berg/whatever RP Wood RP Marshall Closer Marmol IF DeWitt IF Baker OF Johnson OF Colvin C Hill Castillo On paper, this doesn't look like a bad team. Not a great team, but a .500 team. They didn't count on losing 2 starters, which most teams don't, and were grossly unprepared with a backup plan. Like you said, we really needed another middle of the order bat. Marlon Byrds a very solid 6-7 guy, but he's not a 5 hitter, and certainly never should have been hitting 3rd. Had this team stayed healthy and competitve, they could have been players into the summer and maybe made some moves at the deadline.
  12. See the problem with LaHair is that his 20's occurred in the minors rather than the Majors. Hell, the majority of his 20's was spent in the PCL. It'd be a whole different story if he was a former top prospect who spent alot of time in the big leagues, failed, came here, reworked his swing like in real life, and did what he did. Well, either you give him a chance or you don't. If you give him a chance, maybe you get some cheap, productive years like Ryan Ludwick or Garrett Jones gave The Cards and Pirates. Maybe you get Jake Fox or Dallas McPherson. I don't think that you'll find a single Cubs fan who will say who needs Fielder or Pujols, we have Lahair, but if your looking for a cheap bat off the bench, there you go. I suspect he'll have spring training to battle it out with Colvin, and if Colvin wins out, LaHair will end up in Japan.
  13. Wait, what? If he wants 5-6 years for his oft injured 35 year old, I wonder what he wants for a 28 year old in the prime of his career who happens to be one of the best hitters in the game.
  14. Isn't it a best of 5 series?
  15. Yup. When you were once a shoe in for the playoffs, if not the division, and all of the sudden you have a very good, young team breathing down your neck, why not see what's out there. They aren't going to overpay for anyone, but if there's somebody out there that can help their cause, it can't hurt to get them, especially with expanded rosters. I can't imagine that guys like Jim Thome, Derrek Lee, or Pat Burrell would be all that hard to aquire.
  16. i like this one... a year after the cubs finish 15 or 20 games below .500, you're suggesting that they might be the #2 team in the national league, without having any knowledge about what the cubs do in the offseason. Where does it say they The Cubs might be the #2 team in the NL? I said the Phils are the only team that really worries me. Aside from them, there really arent any world beaters in the NL unless somebody goes on a spending spree. Assuming that the new management decides to spend on what we really need, I think we can contend, and I'm glad that we have the NLs top dog out of the way early.
  17. the Red Sox and Rays might consider looking for some late season reinforcements.
  18. A bit of both, and many, many other things. They're average in hits, bottom of the league in walks, swing at the third most pitches outside the zone and contact the fourth least pitches outside the zone. They don't get the opportunities with runners on that almost every other team does. Considering the rest of the offensive numbers are basically middle of the pack (or better), it's the lack of opportunities that kills the offense. As far as killing the team overall, look no further than the starting rotation, and guys like Coleman, Russell and Davis being forced to eat up too many starts. The Cubs are 4-25 when one of those three started the game. Consider that the Cubs are 2 over .500 when anybody else pitched, and even considering Wells' slow return to effectiveness, Dempster's early struggles, Zambrano's late struggles, and Garza's total lack of run support, the team has done decently otherwise. Nobodies questioning the black holes we had at the 4th and 5th spots for a good portion of the season, coupled with the fact that Dempster got off to an awful start. If we hadn't made the Garza trade, I don't even think about what our rotation would look like, especially after Z was banished. Coleman, Lopez, AND Ortiz. :stickman:
  19. A bit of both, and many, many other things.
  20. Looks like the Tigers are 3 innings away from clinching the division before their game even starts, as the Sox and Indians are both down in the 7th.
  21. This award is the gateway to greatness. Just ask Brian Dopirak, Chad Blasko, Nic Jackson, and both Patterson brothers.
