  1. Maholm is this year's Jeff Blauser. His career record is good at Wrigley Field is good because he faced the Cubs all those years not because he is good. By that logic, pretty much every hitter who faced the Cubs in Blausers era should have great numbers at Wrigley, and every pitcher who faced them in Maholms years with the Pirates should as well, and true or not, I'm too lazy to check the splits a good chunk of Maholms Pirates career was '07-'09 when the Cubs were good, or in the case of '08, great. My point was that just because some mediocre player has decent numbers against you, it doesn't mean that you ought to acquire that player. I guess that is a little too deep for some posters. That's not why the signed him. It was because of his upside. He was off to a great start last year, and it appeared he was in his way to meeting his potential before he got injured. I believe he got a 1/5 deal, which doesn't sound super low risk, but with the amount of available money they had at the time it was a risk worth taking for 1 year. Shark, Maholm, and Volstad were all highly touted not too long ago, and can still potentially make up one hell of a back end of the rotation. I mean who's he really blocking? Rodrigo Lopez? All of the Iowa starters have been mediocre to awful.
  2. Wellington Castillo made this weeks Baseball Prospectus 10 Pack Don't know how necessary it was the start off with The Cubs aren't a very good baseball team, but whatever.
  3. Why would it take a trade of Byrd to get a guy who was released? DFA isn't released. They have 10 days to either trade, release or waive him. So if other teams are interested and offering the Red Sox something of value, it might take something of value to get him. This being said, perhaps a deal for Marlon Byrd wouldn't be the worst thing. Sure, it could be viewed as selling low, but even if he does manage to raise his .065/.147/.065/.212 line, how much more would we really get for him? I'd take Bowden and a fringe prospect and call it a day.
  4. John Andreoli sure does get on base alot. .517 OBP. Doesnt seem to have much power though. I wonder if there's any legitamacy to Valbenas early numbers or if it's just the PCL working it's magic? With he and Cardenas rakng down there, DeWitt could be on borrowed time.
  5. The first and last time I remember hearing the term hump in that context was King of New York.
  6. I think it depends on who you talk to. He's a pretty polarizing player as far as perception goes. I'd be really happy to have him on the team, but I think he'll end up getting overpaid by someone. He is a great defensive CF and hits a fair number of homers, but he doesn't get on base well and gets caught stealing way too much. He'd be great as a CF for a reasonable price, but his bat won't play at the corners, Jackson is coming and some team is going to pay Upton a ton. I can't think of a good reason the Cubs would want to get in on that. I agree, and the same goes with all of them. Upton, Young, Ethier, and Swisher would each be solid additions, but none of them are the type of players that you want to get in any kind of bidding war over. My guess is that as of now, the early plan for LF for the next 2 years is hope for the best from LaHair and ride Soriano until the engine drops out.if something becomes available at the right price between now and then, go for it. If we do sign Soler, then hopefully he's ready to take over a corner OF spot by 2015.

  8. Looking over this guys minor league career, I'd definitely take a flier. Doesn't scream out superstar, but he certainly looks better than anything we have in Iowa as far as starters or even give him a crack at the big league pen. There's really nothing to lose and no reason not to.
  9. Struck was kind of sucky going 5.0 with 3 H 2 ER 4 BB 1 K
  10. Cardinals Random Scrubs A-W raked on us over the years so why should X be any different?
  11. He gives off the incoherence of Ronnie without the charm.
  12. Pretty sure that's better than Clevenger in RF I like it. It gives them a chance to see what LaHair looks like in the OF in case Marlon Byrds OPS continues to plummet below the Mendoza Line and also give Clevenger some at bats to see if it's worth it to give him a few starts.
  13. I know it's early, but Marlon Byrd is at .212. That's OPS, not BA and you can tack a additinal 0-3 to that. That's a special kind of bad.
  14. I was wondering the same about half of the Cardinals lineup yesterday. Where do these guys even come from?
  15. Pretty much everyone is in Daytona offensively with the exception of Silva. John Andreoli has been pretty good, as ha Alcantara offensively, but he already has 6 errors.
  16. The 2013 FA corner OF crop is highlighted by B.J. Upton, Swisher, Ethier, Delmon Young and Shane Victorino who I'd have to assume is extended. Upton would be my first choice assuming he can play a corner OF. Young, Ethier, and Swisher each have their advantages as well. However, unless they can move Soriano, I'm not certain that they'll look for OF help unless someone like a Michael Young or another reclamation type becomes available. Even if they do they could go with LaHair, Jackson, and DeJesus across the OF with Sappelt as the 4th.
  17. I don't know much about Bowden, but I find this kind of amusing because there were several posters at SoSH that were getting a bit up in arms because they thought he'd be our PTBNL in the Theo trade. But yes, seems like Theos type of target.
  18. How much longer does Geo get? Midseason at least. Theyll probably want value if possible so theyll probzbly give him time. I could see the Rays making a fair offer soonish. Their situation behind the plate is a mess. The question is what is considered a fair offer for a guy whose OPS is less than his weight?
  19. A lot of closers do seem to be going down. It sure would be nice for Marmol to get his act together in hopes that someone will overpay.
  20. I'm not even sure they should be sent up in that order at this point. The thing is, DeJesus has played center so I'm at the point where I want to say [expletive] it, bring on Joe Mather. As for Soto, while you don't want to go crazy over 9 games, Clevenger has hit well so it's really not unreasonable to give him a few starts, and if he keeps hitting, give him a few more. This early in the season while calling The Cubs a long shot would be generous, but the objective should still be to give yourself the best chance to win as many games as possible and not play the vets and try and build trade value.
  21. The great thing is that of all of the relevant prospects, Sappelt is the only one struggling, and his ceiling is really more of a 4th OF than anything. Jackson, Rizzo, Vitters, Castillo, and to a lesser extent, Cardenas and Campana are all guys who are worth getting excited about, and if they do get a call in September or sooner, there's Burgess, Watkins, and maybe Ha ready to take their places. Now the pitching is another story. Aside from Wood, the rest of the rotation seems full of 5 starters at best. Wood was decent but not great, going 5 giving up 8 H 3 ER 3 BB and 7 K and was in line for the win but Nate Robertson took that off his plate.
  22. How much longer does Geo get? Presumably more than a week. While I agree mostly, I don't think that it's unreasonable to let Clevenger have a few starts, and if he keeps hitting, let him have a few more.
  23. Micheal Burgess with a HR(reportedly a no doubter) and a 2B. Could he be re-establishing himself as a prospect? He's very age appropriate at 23 in AA.
  24. Apparently getting benched for a day counts as 'having a run in' now. I do remember Quade publicly calling out both Castro and Barney for lack of hustle of some stupid [expletive] like that at one point last year.
