  1. I think for some Cubs fans, this scenario is already playing out as they've argued against signing Pujols/Darvish/Cespedes because we wouldn't win this year with them. I trust Theo/Jed will not fall into that mentality, though. The problem is that some of these fans equate overbidding on guys like Cespedes, Darvish, or Soler with giving a potential albatross contract to someone like Pujols or Fielder. For example, Cespedes contract is 4/36, so even if he proved a mega bust, it wouldn't handcuff a big market team like the Cubs who have so much money off the books and more to come. These are the kind of guys that are worth investing in.
  2. Wasn't Raley somewhat well regarded when he was drafted? Seems like he has a chance to be more than an organizational filler if nothing else.
  3. Very intriguing pitching all across the board.
  4. This guy just caught my eye. He was a 2010 40th round pick but it looks like last year, he was somewhat of a K machine with minimal walks, 44/8 in 38 IP. Impressive.
  5. http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/prospects/column/2012/2613217.html But on the bright side, our 8th round pick that year was Marquez Smith who had some respectable minor league seasons before being released earlier this month :( :( :(
  6. I have seen a number of people on here say the Cespedes and Darvish contracts are pretty bad and their teams will be regretting them (especially Cespedes). Well that's silly. The Cespedes contract is only even potentially onerous to a team like the A's, and the only thing exorbitant about Darvish was the posting fee. Yeah, I'd be pretty happy if we got Darvish on the posting fee/contract combo the Rangers did - it's doubtlessly a risk, but one very worth taking. The Cespedes contract has a very real chance to be a major bargain and wouldn't be an albatross even if he completely busts. I can at least understand (even though I disagree with) the complaints about Pujols' contract, I have no idea where the criticisms of the Darvish/Cespedes deals are coming from. People trying to tell themselves that we dodged a bullet and we're better off saving the money and going after someone like Joey Votto, Matt Cain, or Cole Hamels.
  7. Michael Burgess has also been off to a hot start, although I seem to remember him doing the same last year as well. I won't put too much stock into it, but it sure would be nice if he could establish himself as a legit power hitting corner infield prospect.
  8. I really hope that he doesn't get booed. I also hope that he continues his awful start to the season. As sucky as the last 2 games ended, the starting pitching did give some glimmer of hope. Now hopefully they can keep it up vs. a more capable offense.
  9. I always assumed that it had to do with his name.
  10. Did I miss his previous stint? But yeah, I wouldn't be shocked to see him up by the summer.
  11. You have no idea what happened yesterday, do you? Very bad things.
  12. His hat is like a shark's fin. His uniform also is the deepest/blue-est. Just out of curiosity, did Len or Bob ever mention te Shark vs. Shark thing when Bernadina was up?
  13. I'm at my inlaws for Easter, so I better hide my Shark boner, but it's a raging one.
  14. This. Especially considering the state of the organization and the direction Theo and Jed wanted to go, passing on the Fielder and Pujols speepstakes was very understandable. However, both Cespedes and Soler were exactly what we needed and we had the funds to overpay for both. Especially taking into consideration the lack of elite free agents in the near future and the upcoming regulations when it comes to overslot draft picks one could argue that it was virtually crucial to get these guys. At this point, Soler is a must.
  15. There's no reason to pull Wood from that role at this point, but if he can't find the strike zone sooner than latet nobody willl disagree that the plug will have to be pulled. The last thing we need is the back end of our pen walking every other batter.
  16. But a lot of it comes down to who needs what and how badly. We dont know how much time Fister williss and how badly they need a replacement, I at all. However, Detroit being a string fav for their division and Fister their number 2 starter if he is to miss significant time chances are that they're going to go shopping for a replacement, and if that happens we should be right there with either Garza or Dempster.
  17. Play him or Cespedes in either RF or LF. DeJesus is a nice player, but I wouldn't think twice about benching/trading either he or Soriano in order to eventually get both Cespedes and BJax in the lineup. That's crazy talk. Where would Reed Johnson play?
  18. Depending on how much time they expect Fister to miss, perhaps we could interest them in our ace instead.
  19. I think that a lot of was due to the fact that as wicked as his stuff was, more often than not it was well out of the strike zone but so nasty that hitters chased anyway. As they caught on they figured that if they just kept the bat on the shoulder they'd get a free pass. He was forced to adjust and has been far less effective since.
  20. @freeptigers: Strained left side for Doug Fister. He is undergoing further evaluation. Hopefully its nothing too serious, but if it is...
  21. Losing games like the last 2 is a great way to take the wind out of a weary fan bases sails nice and early. 3 page GTs by this time next week?
  22. Cashner Marshall Carpenter Samardzjia praying the situation rarely arrises.
  23. The Wood/Marmol connection is on pace to piss on our cornflakes 162 times this season.
  24. Sadly or not, he's improved. I remember seeing him a few years back, and he was pretty dang awful. I think you could probably get away with him at 3rd for a tiny bit, but in the end, his bat needs to play. Moving a third baseman to the OF reminds me of the David Kelton situation for some reason. Ugh ... talk about a guy who was just not meant to play OF. I always over glorify David Kelton as a prospect. For some reason it's etche in my mind that he was this blur chip guy, but in reality, he had that one good year in AA and was only on the top 100 (#45) once in '01/'02. Probably because that's right around the time I started somewhat following the minor leagues, the time of Prior/Cruz/to a lesser extent Zambrano-mania and he was one of the first that caught my eye aside from the future of our rotation.
