  1. This. I don't see where people are saying he's lost something on the fastball. It has little or nothing to do with his fastball. His slider has always been his best pitch. His ability to throw it for strikes in any count was what made him great. Once set up he could throw it away out of the zone and get even great hitters to flail at it. This year especially it doesn't have the movement it did and he can't locate it because of the lack of movement. It doesn't tail into the zone for called strikes and it stay in the hitting zone when he's trying to get the swing and miss, making it very hittable. The thread title says it all. The thing us though, that he didn't consistantly throw it for strikes, but it was so nasty that hitters used to flail away at the it and look foolish, and more often than not it ended up well out of the zone. As hitters and coaches picked up on that, they were more inclined to keep the bat on their should knowing that they had a pretty good chance of either getting a free pass or inducing a meatball.
  2. Assuming Garza truely is under the weather and not injured, if Wood pitches tomorrow, someone is going to have to develope an "injury" in the next 24 hours. My vote goes to Reed Johnson.
  3. Has anyone seen Cates? Is he as bad as his stats would lead us to believe?
  4. What does he have a crappy agent or something? Doesn't make any sense that the others got cleared so quickly and he still on hold? The holdup is with the U.S. government, not something to do with his agent. [expletive] you Obama!!!!!!!! He's trying to delay Solers free agency long enough for the White Sox to clear enough payroll to beat the Cubs offer.
  5. When putting together fantasy rotations for the Cubs of the mid 00's, they consistently forget how big of a deal Juan Cruz was as a prospect. Had he been able to reach his ceiling he'd argueably have been our #2 in any fantasy rotation even if Wood remained healthy.
  6. It's a good thing that Dale Sveum didn't immediately thrust Kerry Wood into late inning situations upon his return as he stated he would not.
  7. I'll take him. Apparently, he'd been having personal issues with the Brewers since last year. I remember rumblings at Brewerfan of him as an option for their closer job before Axford emerged.
  8. Didn't Jeff Stevens profile as future a closer at one point? Whatever became of him, other than big league suckage? ETA Mets AAA affiliate with a 4.09 ERA 2.09 WHIP 8/7 BB/K in 11 IP. Never mind then.
  9. The Cubs have also announced that Carlos Marmol's trade value is officially equal to that of Sean Camp.
  10. Worst stat in all of sports. It really should be changed to QS (quality start). It sucks that a starter has to pitch 5 fill to qualify for a win, but could potentially throw 1 pitch, be taken out and be in line for the L. A reliever can pitch to 1 batter for a win, or what's worse give up a lead and then the team regains it in the next half inning and he's up for the W.
  11. I don't know how many of these guys would be able to be big league closers, but we have our share of intriguing relievers on the farm AAA Jeff Beliveau 2.45 ERA 1.09 WHIP 14.2 IP 5/12 BB/K Blake Parker 0.96 ERA 0.75 WHIP 9.1 IP 3/6 BB/K Scott Maine AAA 1.43 ERA .632 WHIP 6.1 IP 2/5 BB/K big league line: 1.59 ERA .529 WHIP 5.2 IP 2/10 BB/K AA+AAA Frank Batista 0.00 ERA .76 11.1 IP WHIP 2/12 BB/K AA Alberto Cabrera 2.13 ERA 0.87 WHIP 12.2 IP 4/14 BB/K Kevin Rhoderick 1.62 .91 WHIP 11.0 3/12 BB/K Marcus Hatley 3.86 1.11 WHIP 11.2 3/15 BB/K A+/AA Casey Harman 1.88 ERA .977 WHIP 14.2 IP 3/11 BB/K, although AA hasn't been so kind to him. A/A+/AA Scott Weisman 1.88 ERA .977 WHIP 14.1 IP 2/10 BB/K A+ Kyler Burke 1.71 ERA 1.048 WHIP 21 IP 4/17 BB/K Other interesting options are McNutt, who's durability is in question and Jay Jackson who could re-invent himself before being given up upon. The trouble calling these guys up is that our middle relievers has been mostly productive, and the trouble has been Wood and Marmol. Castillo is a candidate for a phantom injury but there's really nobody else deserving of demotion.
  12. Over the past 10 games, Dave Sappelt is hitting .278/.395/.500/.895 2HR 7 BB 5 K. Boosted his season OPS to .723. Love to see him get a shot in center or at least share it with Campana and use Mather as a utility bat allowing Reed Johnson to pursue other opportunuties.
  13. I'd take Mariano with 2 torn ACLs over Marmol.
  14. It's really just been the back end rather than the bullpen as a whole. The majority of the pen has been very solid in their roles but it shows that quality back end relievers are more valuable than they get credit for. When your starting pitching is going to give up roughly 2-3 runs per game and an offense that's going to score roughly 2-4 runs a game, my advanced skills in elementary Mathamatics tell me that the result is going to be a lot of 1-2 run leads entering the late innings. My vote is to either dip into the minors or try to trade for some live arms an just start throwing [expletive] at the wall. Alberto Canreras been great for AA and already on the 40 man. Surely Lendy Castilllo could develope a minor injury, and by minor, I of course mean non-existent.
  15. we simply don't have many bats throughout the organization, at least not of the anywhere near big league ready variety. Would we really be able to get enough of a return to justify moving a guy who could be a very affordable .260-.270/.825-.850 hitter, assuming he can play a serviceable LF? I'd say we could maybe get 2 guys from the back of someones top 10-15 and maybe an additional fringe guy assuming we tossed in something else.
  16. Considering it's now time to move past considering, and into announcing. Introducing your new Chicago Cubs closer,Player to be Named Later.
  17. So you say our starting pitching's good, our bullpen sucks, at least the back end and we don't score enough runs? I thought nobody would ever shed light on the problems we've known about since day 1.
  18. There was a time when I was alone in the Bryan LaHair bandwagon, and even I saw his ceiling as something between Ron Kittle and Russ Branyan, so yeah, decent Adam Dunn would be super.
  19. We could always bring him back as a FA in the offseason if we were to trade him this year An extension may be the one thing that convinces him to waive his rights. If he loves the organization as much as he says he does, he'll accept a trade knowing that it's likely the best thing for the team going forword The Tigers, Yankees, and Red Sox are some contenders who would love to get ahold of Dempster. If he pitches the way he has been, a new contract shouldnt't be a problem for him. Of course when you're 36, no matter what you do it's going to be very hard to get more than a 2 year deal.
  20. Dolis would be an awful option, at least until he learns control. I still say we try out a few live arms from the minors that hitters arent familiar with like Batista, Cabrera, or even Jackson since I think that the ship has sailed on him being a big league starter.
  21. So hows that new user name treating you?
  22. Do you really think that in my wildest I thought we could get one of those guys for LaHair or that I think that you were suggesting that? Even B2B wouldnt give the matter any thought. If he does what he's doing for the next month, maybe we could get a pair from the back end of their top 10.
  23. He tried out and they offered him a deal so they must have thought he has a little something in the tank, thus why not seize the opportunity.
  24. LA. We'll trade him Kemp and Kershaw and throw in Randy Wells. I don't get it. Wasn't sure you were suggesting we trade him to LA or a typo meaning LF.
  25. LA. We'll trade him Kemp and Kershaw and throw in Randy Wells.
