  1. It doesn't take much evaluation to point out that a guy has thrived at each of the lower levels, plays a premium position, and is very young. As for the Castro comparison, the one thing that Amaya has on him, and seems to have had going for him all along is OBP, which this organization values highly. Second base is a premium position? In the only league Amaya and Castro have both played in (AZL at age 18), Castro walked 14 times in 215 PA while Amaya walked 13 times in 227 PA. Castro had a better IsoD wen you compare their rookie ball seasons. Castro showed better patience; Amaya had a higher OBP because he hit for better average but I think we all know Castro had and has a better hit tool. Up until this season, he's played as much SS as anything else. Between Castro and Baez, we seemingly have SS locked up long term one awy or another. With all of the other high ceiling MI prospects we have: Amaya, Hernandez, Alcantara, Torryes, and Lake, who is still considered high ceiling in my book, they can't all play SS.
  2. Could just be he want's to focus on the birth of his child. What an ass. Pitchers' families are screwing up our trade deadline. Single pitchers, new market inefficiency? Joke if you will, but what happens with Matt Garza over the next 4 days is one of the key decisions of Epstein and Hoyer's long term agenda. If they allow Garza to go past the deadline without pitching it suggests that: A. He is injured and would not be able to pitch anyway B. there is enough interest in him that teams have expressed willingness to trade for him after a week and a half layoff with nothing more than medical clearence C. They're OK not trading him D. With Hamels off the market, the 2013 FA market for starting pitching becomes limited to Zack Greinke and a hand full of decent but not spectacular options (Marcum, Jackson, McCarthy, Sanchez) whose price will rise as a result of Hamels extension and high risks (Peavy, Zambrano). Also, the deadline trade market could suddenly feature Cliff Lee and Josh Johnson in addition to Greinke. With this in mind, they could prefer to take a gamble on waiting until the Winter to trade him.

  4. Oh yes, I remember this. Ridiculousness at its finest. If you were to ask some peope on this board about a month ago if they'd rather have Castro or Tris Speaker in his prime, they'd pick Castro. Some probably still would.
  5. the scuttle was looking at pence or victorino for left field, with abreau heading to bench/pinch hitting spot starts. We have a left fielder OPSng in the .800s who just so happens to be one of the top defensive LFs in the league. Apparently.
  6. Not sure what we have in the "hitters that can get on base department," though anything from Johnson/Baker to Soriano or DeJesus could appeal to them. More importantly, surely Maholm would be an upgrade over Colon or Liriano.
  7. Part of what puts Amaya ahead of Alcantara for me is that Amaya has been highly touted for I believe 2 years now, whereas Alcantara, while I seem to remember him in the radar before this year kind of popped out of nowhere as a toppish prospect. While this might not sound like a viable reason for ranking him higher, it seems as though in the past reputation alone has entered into the rankings.
  8. I think that a lot of teams would be very interested in Maholm, with or without us paying a dime. However, I simply can't see him bringing back Delgado. His return probably depends on what shows up on the market in the next week. Greinke will cost more than a lot of teams are willing to pay, and there's only one of him. We havn't heard much on the status of Garza since his paternity leave. Josh Johnson and Cliff Lee could be available, but someone would need to really blow them away with an offer.Beyond that, Edninson Volquez, Jason Vargas, Clayton Richard, Joe Saunders, and the one and only Big Z are all options for teams looking for a solid mid rotation starter.
  9. The main thing that comes to mind for me is if Dempster really is dead set on either staying in Chicago or going to LA, that gives us not 1 but 3 teams to work with. Each of which are contending, each of which have been in the hunt for starting pitching. The White Sox farm system may be lacking, but they must have something, and we have the right guys to find it.
  10. I know that Baez, Almora, and Soler are all but cemented in as our top 3 prospects for next year, but Gioskar Amaya must be getting some serious consideration for 4-5. Maybe even crack the top 100? He's only 19, plays one of the most valuable positions, and already has the results at the lower levels. While he hasn't leapfrogged levels like Castro did, it's hard not to want to compare the two.
  11. It's not often that we're on the same page, so I'll savor the moment. This being said, it will be more amusing for us to get an equal or better return after people have made themselves look silly with their respective plots to avenge his treachery
  12. You call it a bad call by the umps. I call it the umps punishing Dempster for blocking a trade.
  13. The Cubs should stake him to a huge lead and then pull him with 2 out in the 5th. No W for you Benidict Arnold.
  14. [expletive] Stop equating Dempster and Garza being on the team. Garza is a good [expletive] pitcher, is young, and is signed next year. And Dempster is a good [expletive] pitcher, may not be young, and we can either have next year for 12.5 mil, which will be less than Garza or get a draft pick in his place. We can even Keep Maholm. Theo's job does not depend on how closely we resemble the Astros in 2013.
  15. This is his #1 destination. We should probably kill him just to be sure. You hold on to Dempster because a draft pick or Dempster at 12.5M is a better deal we'd get in return for him. Dempster at 12.5M next year has to be the worst case scenario. The team probably isn't going to be very good and he won't have as much value in a trade next summer. It'd just be a big, fat waste of an asset. The worst case scenerio is Dempster for 12.5M and he blows his arm out in ST. Otherwise, it's a worst case scenerio I can live with. If we can get value for Garza and/or Maholm, great. If not, or even if we do we then do what the Astros are doing and deal DeJesus, Soto, Marmol, Johnson, and Baker for whatever we can get. If someone gives us something of value for Soriano, great. If our worst case scenerio rotation for 2013 is Garza/Dempster/Shark/Maholm/Wood, I can live with it. We don't have to be horrible next year. Unless you prefer Shark/Wood/Volstad/Raley/Coleman and wait another 3 years to be remotely competitive.
  16. I think you're reaching a bit. If the Brewers called up and said we'd take Delgado for Greinke, I doubt the Braves would even hesitate to pull the trigger. Like I said, I was hopeful, but Dempster's in the damn lineup today...... I know it's just 3 hours from game time, but even if the deal is completed at 11:20, they could have Germano spot start. They'd be an arm short, but Marmol is the only reliever that's been used the past 2 days, and tomorrow's an off day.
  17. Oh, they've moved on have they. Did he make mention of what they've moved on to? Cole Hamels who's about to sign an extension? Zack Greinke who every contender is scouting, and will cost a lot more than Randall Delgado? Cliff Lee, whose team wants a big chunk of his salary picked up, which the Braves likely can't afford? Josh Johnson who will cost 2 arms, 3 legs and a PTBNL? Francisco Liriano who's as inconsistent as they come? Matt Garza who's, um, well, nobody's quite sure what's going on with Matt Garza. There are more teams looking for starting pitching then there are available front end starting pitchers. By Tuesday afternoon, at 4PM Eastern Time, every pitcher who is available will have found a loving home.
  18. yeah you have three kids under the age of 6, one of which needs significant medical attention, what's the big deal about being an absentee dad for a few months I see what you're saying, Truffle, but it's three months. Even if he stays with the Cubs, he's still going to be gone half of the time for the next two, and I'm sure that he could make arrangements with a team that really wants him in which he can fly home for a few days between his starts. Unless Ryan is the one providing the medical care or Jenny is on her own caring for the three kids, which I doubt, the medical attention part is irrelevant to whether or not he's around. On the other side of the coin, the school year starts in about a month, so it's more than reasonable for them to know where they'll be beyond the 2012 baseball season, so it wouldn't be a surprise if he does want a team that is willing to give him an extension. He's going to be 36 next season, so there's a good chance that wherever he signs his next contract is where he'll finish his career.
  19. The [expletive] is that. To you guys that live in Chicago: Have you guys heard any of that stuff before? I figure you hear some things from time to time about guys partying and all that. What the hell is this [expletive], I guess is what I'm asking? I've heard it a little bit. My girlfriend works at Children's Memorial and I guess she's overheard some stuff indicating that the Dempsters were having some family problems. Now that I think about it, there was a Jenny Dempster twitter account which popped up a few times on Twitter when the trade first began falling apart, and made like 2-3 tweets along the lines of I don't know what's going on. Not sure if it was a real one, but I tried to locate it later to see if it had any further updates, and it had seemingly vanished. I assumed it was because people were asking her to many questions, but this could make sense. It was before this came out.
  20. He should be benched out of principle. Then if he doesn't accept a trade, commence public humiliation. Lock him in the stockades, and the first 500 fans into Wrigley each game get to pelt him with their own fecal matter and rotten vegetables. He must be shamed and punished for making the Cubs wait an extra week before they trade him.
  21. Eight digits...2013, 2014 That's a very good reason. Why nobody would want to pick up the remainder Alfonso Soriano's contract.
  22. I know Matt Loosen hasn't even hit AA yet, but any chance that when we start calling up Iowa starters to replace traded pitchers that he gets promoted to Iowa? Also, it's nice to see Harris and Hatley join Cabrera in Iowa.
  23. Missing out on Delgado would be disappointing, but it'a not like we're getting fucked out of Dylan Bundy or Matt Moore here. Their are possibilities. If LA is what he wants, there's another team in town looking for starting pitching. Even if he wants to stay in the AL, and at this point he'd likely compromise. If he wants to stay close, there's the White Sox. Their farm system might look like a wasteland, but if Kenny Williams feel as though they have a snowball's chance in hell of landing Greinke, they must have something. That's part of the reason that you put together a top notch scouting team, to comb the lower levels of the minors for raw talent, not just watch the same top prospects night after night. And let's not forget our neighbors in St. Louis. They're close enough to Chicago that he should accept it. Granted some fans might not be able to stomach it, but it's not their choice.
