  1. Surely you can't be serious. Barrett should not be resigned past this year. He plays the wrong position, and is the wrong age to mess around with that kind of risk. Okay, maybe if he wanted a 1 year deal I'd be fine with it. But I don't want to see the Cubs give him the Varitek treatment and give him a nice parting gift of a contract he couldn't possibly live up to. I was anti-Barrett when he arrived on the scene. But he completely outperformed my expectations, and I've been pretty happy with him. But as a catcher entering his 30's with a lot of wear and tear and time served, he's a risk for breaking down. He already has a relatively poor approach at the plate. If he's no longer in peak physical form I doubt he can make up for it. And if he's not an elite hitting catcher, than I'm afraid his defensive questions are no longer maskable. If he could convert to a corner OF position or something, then maybe we've got a different story. But I don't see it happening.
  2. Actually, it does make them black. It just doesn't make them african-americans. This is one of the most nonsensical distinctions that I don't get. If a white guy from Germany was playing in the US, he's still a white guy, just like a white guy from Australia or one from England. White athletes from any country get lumped into the category or white athlete, but black athletes are categorized differently. It's stupid.
  3. Bad neck. He's been pretty bad over the past 8 games. With his wrist issue, this neck thing, his lack of power all year and cold streak, it couldn't hurt to let him sit. Even if that means I have to see Floyd at 1st base tonight.
  4. Night putting. Putting at night with the 15-year old daughter of the dean.
  5. You embarrassed me in philly, don't repeat it in NY.
  6. Hey, let's just completely overreact to a small responsible gesture that doesn't affect your life whatsoever.
  7. I wish I had a Hundley jersey to wear out to bars.
  8. Is this any different than what happened with Clement and Lieber before they went down? Lieber was his best against RHP in the 2 years just prior to getting injured. Your theory doesn't come close to saying an injury is unlikely, let alone improbable. If anything he appears to be getting more gimmicky, which could explain the increase in k's as well as the increase in BB. And he's given up more and more HR to RH batters as well.
  9. Again! Sense! There's absolutely no sense in that statement. If we find out tomorrow he needs TJS, do you ignore that and say it doesn't erase the past 5 years? We aren't talking about a down year. He's been downright awful. That's not normal. Something isn't right. I'm assuming that he doesn't actually need TJS. Call me crazy. Even if it's an issue other than TJS related, there's no sense in saying you have to give a guy a huge contract based on the past 5 years when there is something clearly wrong right now. Mark Mulder put up a pretty good 5 year run before his career fell apart. The good thing is the Cubs don't need to make a decision today. But hopefully there are people in charge that are using more sense than the "well he's been great for 5 years and right now doesn't change that fact" method to determine player value. We're talking about a pitcher here, not a left fielder.
  10. Again! Sense! There's absolutely no sense in that statement. If we find out tomorrow he needs TJS, do you ignore that and say it doesn't erase the past 5 years? We aren't talking about a down year. He's been downright awful. That's not normal. Something isn't right.
  11. Did you mean to say: Why hasn't Chris Elliot established himself for the comedic genius that he is? or, Why has Chris Elliot established himself for the comedic genius that he isn't?
  12. While this upcoming stretch could greatly impact the season, they'll probably come out of it similar to how they went in, gaining or losing maybe a game or two in the standings.
  13. If anything, he's saying that with a lot of off days scheduled in April and May, there's really no reason to rest your starters until June, July and August. Regardless, there's no reason why veterans have to be starters because they are veterans. If anything, the track record of veterans often shows that they really shouldn't be everday guys (Jones, Floyd, DeRosa) in the first place.
  14. Not true. They've only banned it on inbound flights.
  15. The Cubs climbed the ladder every year in terms of payroll rankings. A few years ago, when lots of teams were pulling in the strings, the Cubs kept spending. They went from around 12th in the bigs to top 5 with Dusty. But all that spending brought them nowhere in the end.
  16. You move a reliever, going with 11 pitchers. That's the logical move, but Lou seems dead set on going with 12 pitchers, especially the way he's been using the pen lately. A few more 1-run outputs by this lineup might change his mind, especially if the pitching holds up.
  17. The kids, they listen to the rap music, which gives them the brain damage, with the hippin' and the hoppin' and the bippin' and the boppin', so they don't know what the jazz, is all about! You see, jazz is like Jell-O pudding pops. No, actually it's more like Kodak film-no, actually jazz is like the New Coke. It'll be around forever. Heh, heh, heh.
  18. The funny thing is, that many people think his job depends on whether or not he can resign Ichiro. But if he resigns him, he'll actually hurt the team more. He can't win on this one. Ichiro is entering his mid-30's as a pretty hum-drum outfielder. But for marketing purposes he'll probably still command a huge contract. If he can hit .310 or higher, he will remain relatively productive, but anything under a .300 season and he starts to look like nothing special
  19. Oddly enough, this is the 5000th "this is going to be the first of 100,000 "trade for Dunn" threads that will litter NSBB this summer" post.
  20. Yes, just don't tell anybody. Trying to sneak away from the in-laws on Mother's Day (after golfing in the morning), is going to be quite the feat if you ask me. Going with a few Phillies fans on Saturday, although I swear, I've never met a single Philllies fan who comes anywhere close to being as crazy a fan as Cubs fans are. The same people are die hard nutty Eagles fans, but they just don't get up for the Phillies in the same way. It's a weird dynamic.
  21. Why didn't they just fire him and let one of the minor league guys like Quade manage the team? He would have listened to everything the GM or president told him. The way the 2nd half of last season was handled was terrible. If we would have just given up and played young guys, we would have known that Theriot was good and wouldn't have wasted money on DeRosa. Also, could have gotten Murton a few more at bats. Brutal job, MacPhail and Hendry. I disagree that money was wasted on Derosa. He just needs to be used like he was in Texas. He makes a great supersub. We just need to be in position to use him that way. DeRosa has been pretty good so far. However, you are right, he could excel as a super sub and should be used as such. DeRosa has been pretty good overall. Although his numbers have slipped the more he's played. His OPS has fallen from the hot start over 1100 down to 800 relatively quickly. He's been horrible in the past week and pretty bad for May overall. He's never been an everyday player, and it's not wise for the Cubs to try and make him one. He's on pace to surpass his career high in games played and just about match in plate appearances. He really does need to be used more as a sub.
  22. If you're building a team of worsts based on some guys' worst years, then I think you should throw in Girardi, Dernier and Dunston into the mix. Those guys had some really piss poor seasons where they racked up a lot of playing time.
  23. The funny thing about that statement was that despite Hendry telling Dusty to play the young guys and not overwork Howry and Eyre, Dusty did the exact opposite whenever possible. I was thinking the same thing. In fact I was really hoping the Cubs would trade Eyre over the offseason because Baker has used him up. Well, he did say those plans began after the Maddux trade, when the Cubs were already 20 under and most of the damage had been done. Those guys had already racked up the innings, and actually pitched less at the end. Guys like Theriot, Murton, Cedeno and Pagan all played quite a bit toward the end, even if some worthless vets did keep getting time. 2005 was the year when the Cubs were out of it but for some reason never went to the kids.
  24. I'll be there as well with my son. Section 241 (left field porch) - 1st row seats. Should be a great pitching match-up tonight. Don't plan on getting abused. I've been to dozens of Cubs games in Philly, and it's definitely nowhere near the same atmosphere of an Eagles game. They'll abuse the Phillies before they'll turn on a Cubs fan. Assuming you don't act like an ass, games in Philly are more like games in Atlanta than Shea or Yankee Stadium.
  25. I can vouch. Did you grab him by the tie? If I was there, I would've. That's how money that look is. Welcome to 1992.
