    He never made it passed spring training. Just another stop on his mission to wear every major league uniform at least once. Didn't realize Spring Training went all the way through April 23 in 1999. He never actually played for the Chicago Cubs though, right?

    Some of them were stars. Most of them don't even come close to fairly big names.

    What an awful euphemism to use for a pitching staff. If that's a euphemism, I'm missing something.

    Well then it becomes the argument of complaining about every time a free agent the Cubs didn't sign performs well. You don't see people angry at the Cubs for not signing Barry Bonds in '93, but if Hamilton goes on to have a good career, there will be people screaming about stupid management trading Josh Hamilton back in '07. It's annoying because I can already see it happening, and I don't suffer fools well. That is an absurd comparison. Choosing not to sign a free agent is nothing like missing on a player in the rule 5. He wasn't some obscure kid nobody thought had any talent. The Reds must have thought somebody else was going to take Hamilton, which is why they asked the Cubs to take him 3rd.

    It was hardly a risk for the Reds. The fact that no team picking ahead of the Cubs picked Hamilton does not excuse them from having the foresight to picking him. The complaints about them trading him are meaningless, but when a player of that talent is available it's the personel people's job to find them.

    are cubs players really that obscure? cubs are probably the 3rd or 4th most popular team in baseball. Rookies are that obscure to the general all star voting public. Guys with a decent track record will always get the benefit of the doubt.

    This is more like a list of names LLF remembers playing with the Cubs for brief periods of time since he started following the team than a list of one time star players.

    I don't know if they'll get any new fans. They may rekindle the passions of some former fans. At least it's not some combination of small market/non-hockey market. But I'm sure they'd much prefer something like Chicago/NY or LA/MON. Detroit has been there quite a lot and was winning while the league was sinking. Crosby's star alone isn't going to carry the torch for the NHL. This isn't Gretzky in the early 80's. I doubt we're going to see a surge of non-Pittsburgh people suddenly being enamored with him, especially with that horrible facial hair.

    No need to tell him, it's implied. Some would say you don't warm anybody up before it's broken up so you don't psyche him out. But I think that's a good compromise between letting him go for the no-no and protecting him from a 130+ pitch night.

    So LLF got the single thing wrong, but puppy dogs right...hes batting .500! He's a ballplayer though, so being married can be very similar to being single.

    Already has as many walks (15) as he did last year in 324 fewer at bats. Definitely good news. Moderately good news, if any. .238/.306/.381 with a 46/15 K/BB is still a very anemic line. Although that OPS may be about a 100 point jump from where it was a month ago.

    Maddux was an above average starter all 3 years(His 2nd go-around) with the Cubs. not 2006 Average ERA+ for starters is ~96. (Admittedly, not the best way to judge things, but it's quick n dirty) He was horrible for the last couple months before he was traded. He was fine in 2004 and 2005.

    What do you mean why isn't he considered? It looks as though McCann is leading the All-Star votes and his numbers aren't as good as Soto's although there are very good. Oh, I thought you were saying he wasn't on the ballot. The answer to your question is very simple, and obvious. It's a popularity contest and Geo isn't that well known. If he keeps hitting, and keeps getting awards, all the fantasy people are going to know him, and he'll probably make the team. Believe me, all the fantasy people know him, that's not the crowd you have to worry about. The fantasy crowd is more than just the hardcore types. There's a lot of very casual players who only look what their team is doing.

    Yeah, but that thread is only 2 weeks old, and it's only been "brought back" twice since then and most of the thread isn't even related to the budhouse comments. The guy who started it has made multiple threads about his hatred for the sham closer. It's not like a one-time overreaction that people are hanging over his head. That was one example. I'm just making the point that if you don't want people to make "I told you so" posts when a player is doing badly, you shouldn't have 5 "I told you so" posts every time Wood gets a save or Soriano hits a HR. I agree.

    Agreed. I see the Cubs ones more often, but I assume that's only because those are the ones I read more often.

    Agree. Although I will often flip over to the ESPN booth early to hear what their main talking points are going to be for the game, and I will go to the opposition's feed on occasion to hear what they are saying.

    They gave up a very good pitching prospect for him. I'm guessing it would take much more than that to convince them to trade.

    I'm beginning to dislike WGN games. My choice is the Houston feed on HD or Len and Bob on regular old uggo tv.

    The first sentence is correct, the second is wrong. There was always a possibility of us keeping him. They could have drafted him in the first place without any deal with Cincy.
