    Sure they could, but they chose to spread it around to several starters. But what is your point? Zambrano isn't perfect. So what? He's been very good, and for much of his career he was worth way more than he was paid. He hasn't been as good as he was at his best, but his decline has been grossly overstated and your nitpicking of him just doesn't make much sense. He's been the best pitcher on perhaps the best pitching team in the NL over the past decade.

    Baker may be redundant, but Tracy is completely useless.

    To be a real number 1 in a 30 team league, why must you be top 10? During the regular season it doesn't matter much. Would you want to enter the playoffs with your best starter not even among the 10 best in the league? Obviously I'd like the best player possible at every single position. It would be sweet to have Schilling and Johnson atop the rotation, but that doesn't happen for most teams.

    I would rather have Baker vs. a RHP than Tracy vs. anyone. I'd rather have the guy that doesn't make an out 70% of the time. Baker against lefties - .313 .389 .594 Read his post again. Some people's post don't show up on my screen. I'm responding to you wanting Tracy. Why? Take the guy who does something good if you can.

    Don't you think maybe he's viewing it as a challenge to keep the job, and he's confident in his ability to play well, and thus justify keeping the prospect down longer? He's not the one who decides who gets playing time, who gets called up and who stays in the minors. He can't just say, "You know what, I'm going to play today, keep that kid in the minors" and have it be so.

    What would be the point of Tracy? They already have Colvin and Fontenot as lefties off the bench for most games, plus Fukudome in any game Nady starts. At least Baker does something, hit lefties. Tracy brings nothing to the table.

    I think you have to focus on getting a top of the 7th inning with 1 out and a man on base down by 3 runs or less guy.

    It's possible they don't. Sure that's been a huge focus in the past, but they've also been known to switch focuses rather quickly and even contradict previous obsessions. Oh its possible they don't now, but after the offseason of get more left handed, I just find it comical that they have completely went away from something that was such a "big problem". That was the 2008/2009 offseason, this offseason the focus was chemistry and middle of the order guy.

    Oh brother... :roll: there's nothing to like about it (besides it's association with winning). so why not have a GOOD song that's associated with winning? I always enjoyed hearing it as a kid on the radio before games (when it made sense). I'm not sure what the problem is.

    I think this is the first year in a decade (and what a great decade it was) that I won't be attending a Cubs game in Philly. Two trends I've seen there has been really freaking hot weather at the games and going from Cubs winning most matchups to Philly dominating nearly every game I've seen. I'm going to reserve any potential Philly trip for a Stanley Cup matchup.

    Not really. I didn't expect much power at all early on, as his biggest skill to date has been making consistent contact. Power shows up later.

    That's because while you have been saying that, JR was not. He backed off his initial claim eventually, but that is not what he was saying. And I'm sorry but no way you really enjoyed 2009 as it occurred. No way.

    Again, 2000 sucked, 2001 was better than expected, but still not close to great. 2002 sucked, 2003 great, 2004 started great but went crappy in a hurry. People said for half a season that they hated the team and things sucked. To pretend like 2004 was somehow great is a huge stretch, but go ahead and take that if you insist. 2005 sucked, 2006 sucked. 2007 was surprisingly good, but there was very little great about it until the end when they backed into the playoffs. 2008 was great, 2009 sucked. 2 legitimately great seasons, maybe 3.5 if you really push it. The rest were either disappointing or absymal. If you want to say they were better than the 90's, you get no argument. But the fact is they were almost a mirror image of the 80's, and as far as the decade as a whole is concerned, they were not great. They can't be great when half the seasons were torture. It's just pointless to pretend otherwise.

He's lived in Chicago for 5 years. it's because chicago is a metropolis, not a suburb, not a burnt-out rustbucket ghost-town with one positive distinction, not a french-canadian one-sport town (sorry, two sport, if you count smoking cigarettes while sitting in cafes as a sport). How dare you dismiss the Alouettes.

    what? Is this somehow true? If so I like Bengie more now. The idea of somebody playing for the sole purpose of blocking a prospect is just terrific.

    I think you might be misremembering. There's no way you had championship hopes in 2000 or 2001. Nobody even thought 2003 was going to be special until June. I would bet the only seasons people went into with legit championship hopes were 2004, 2008 and 2009. That's why I said just about. I felt good going into 2003. I didn't think we'd make the playoffs, but I wouldnt have been shocked if we were competing come September. I felt like things were improving with Prior, Choi, Hill, Zambrano, Cruz, etc. You said just about every season in the decade, presumably that means 8 or 9 seasons. I don't see how it is possible that you had championship hopes in 8 or 9 seasons of the 2000s.

    You may not realize you are lying, but you are. There were a handful of great seasons but the decade was not great. Just stop pretending it was. I'm not. Once more, the point is that it's "great" IN COMPARISON TO THE SUCKFEST THAT WAS THE 1990'S. How are you not grasping this at all? Because that is not what JR is saying. And regardless, it still wasn't great. It was better. It was less sucky. There was less disappointment, but the majority of seasons were major bummers or disasters, they fell way short of expectations that most people had going into the decade. There were more enjoyable moments and seasons than in any previous decade we've seen, but it wasn't close to great.

    Very true, I just have little to no interest in limping into the playoffs and getting swept in three games again. To me, that winds up being about as fulfilling as having missed the playoffs by a few games. Go big or go home, as they say. I have a lot of interest in limping into the playoffs. It means we have a 1 and 8 chance of winning the World Series. it doesn't mean that at all, it means there are 8 teams in the playoffs. the better teams have a better chance of winning the world series. The degree to which that is true is probably smaller than you think. It's considerably higher than the supposed everybody has an equal chance crowd thinks.
