The cross division rivalries should not be a high priority. And no matter how you break it down there's going to be "odd ones", like interleague baseball games nobody cares about. The setup discussed earlier (flipping Minnesota and Illinois in this setup) makes perfect sense for cross-division rivalries. Cross division rivals should not be the first priority. Getting the divisions right should be the top priority. I would claim it's unfair just because it puts Illinois and Indiana together, automatically giving everybody in their division 2 wins.

So far in his career, he hasn't really shown an ability to have a high OBP unless it's tied to his average. I have no problem with him focusing on having a high batting average (considering his doubles power has actually increased during his hot streak), but I agree "First rookie to win a batting title" could end up really increasing his salary demands down the road. It has been tied to his AVG, but not bad. He's had an IsoD around 50-60 most of the time, but in the second half of this year it's at 23. He's drawn 4 walks in the second half while pursuing the batting title. He's only struck out in 11.9% of PA and obviously he has been productive, but it's a little troubling to see him abandon any sense of patience. This second half streak is unsustainable, with .410 BABIP. The guy can't turn into a just put the ball in play guy and live up to expectations.

He's probably the best trade chip of the Cubs four outfielders. He's hardly irreplacable and his reputation right now is probably at its peak. -
He did a pretty admirable job shining up [expletive] in Florida. I don't see why someone wouldn't be excited Because Jim Hendry is the Cubs GM, and Florida has outperformed the Cubs during Hendry's era. They've had young relatively inexpensive players, not excrement.

I don't see the point in being excited about Fredi, his presence would be meaningless and Hendry would still be GM.

His slugging has improved every year, which tells me that he has started to figure things out, and is better than his career .413 slugging in MLB. His .456 is good for 3rd on the current team among regulars, and would be good enough next year to be in the top 5 on the team. Not only that, but he is one of a few guys on the team over the last 3 years who consistently hits well with men on base. Just because getting on base is a stength, doesn't mean you automatically are providing the best production for your team by hitting in the leadoff spot. I don't think he would be out of place there, but I do "think" he would be more comfortable down in the order and would be more valuable to his team based on his slugging and success with men on base (.842 OPS) and runners in scoring position (.865 OPS). That is terrible terrible terrible reasoning.

Patience and getting on base has always been a huge part of Fukudome's approach so your theory makes no sense in this situation, plus his .456 SLG in 2010, let alone 413 MLB career, would hardly be out of place at the top of the order.

but he wasn't a power hitting first baseman, so why penalize him for that? He was in that mold of first baggers like Will Clark and Olerud. Granted they both had a bit more power than Gracie, but they aren't Thome/Big Mac types. Would it have been nicer if he had more power? Hell ya. He still had a damn strong decade though. Power hitting 1B and non power hitting 1B are not two different positions. 1B is the position, and the best ones hit for power. The fact that Grace didn't doesn't excuse him. He's "penalized" because the fact that he didn't hit for power is a negative.

I'm actually hoping he does not win the batting title. It's the sort of random stat that could add to a player's resume/salary demands down the road, and I don't want to risk seeing him turn all batting average obsessed.

I don't have a team, but I can see why somebody who did would feel that way. I could also see many many people not being okay with it. The point is that you are completely lying to yourself if you think this was just like any other transfer.

Is the conference that weak this year? It's not that. It's that Ole Miss was still a strong ass team going into the season, but they just didn't have a QB, so they weren't going to be competing for the West more than likely. Given a good QB, especially a Heisman caliber like Masoli, then they are right there in it with everyone else. Ohhhhh, so you're just pissed your team didn't benefit immediately after acquiring a free agent criminal.

Is Mark Grace really one of the 20 best position players of the 90s?? Maybe if you require the player to have played in every year of the 90's.

The team is Tony LaRussa at his finest. So they have a few bums, but a great hitting OF and a HOF 1B, equating to an average offense to go with a terrific pitching staff and they are on pace for 86 wins. What does Larussa have to do with that?

I don't understand this argument. How does it take the fun out of anything? The stats just show you who should play, it doesn't determine who wins, or the outcome of any matchup.

The difference is that team scored on defense and special teams. The Jets don't give up yardage, but they aren't a great giveaway/takeaway team either and don't threaten to score at any point in the game like those Bears teams did.

The weird thing is it's not really Jets fans talking them up, it's their rivals. Jets fans expect more failure than Cubs fans. I guess a lot of it is Rex Ryan's bluster, but since when did a coach talking about expecting a Super Bowl garner so much attention?

Sanchez was terrible last year, and he showed nothing in the way of hopes for improvement. He's also been crap this preseason. I understand them being in the picture for contention, what I don't understand is the level of expectations for this team. Their over/under for win total is just 9.5, but people talk about them like a 12-14 win team in the making.
