    I always wondered why we don't have Hester do kickoffs instead of punts. (Presuming they only want him to do punts or kickoffs, and not both.) It seems like kickoffs would give him more room to get his speed going. I could be wrong but I think kick returners take bigger hits, and punt returns require greater quickness and shiftiness, which is Hester's thing maybe moreso than straight speed.

    It's the theory that just about everybody has gone with. He was great, but didn't get the recognition, so he wanted to get greater.

    I'm not a fan of these huge ratings especially because this game topped another Bear game from last year. ESPN and NBC see these numbers are going to want the Bears in primetime but I prefer the Sunday afternoon games by a wide margin. Why doesn't ESPN put the games on ABC and get even more viewers? ABC Sports is effectively dead. ESPN is where Disney is focusing their sports effort even if it is on ABC. Besides, Dancing with the Stars pulls in a decent rating and with a total different audience than MNF. ESPN is the most expensive basic cable channel for providers to offer. In order for Disney to justify the price, they need to offer ESPN specific programming that people demand. You can still watch MNF games over the air in most, if not all, local markets (if your team is playing). And of course there's the point that if you can get 17m watching ABC and 17m watching ESPN at the same time that's a whole lot better than 17m on ABC and maybe 1.5m for whatever other nonsense you have on ESPN.

    Anybody surprised a hitting coach from a bad hitting team would be willing to honor the contract that makes him the highest paid hitting coach in the game?

    It's not what I think, it's what I know. It's a 5 man group with questions at every single position. That's far more dangerous than the lack of a mythological pass rushing tackle. And as I said, it's a 5-man group with youth at 3 of the 5 positions. Without Harris (which is the scenario that triggered this discussion) the DL doesn't have anyone drafted as highly as Williams. It doesn't have anyone that garnered the interest in free agency that Omiyale did. And other than Harrison who looks like a DL bust and Melton who was a college RB and LB for 3 years, both lines have a bunch of late round picks. So, it's not like the talent is booming on either line. But as a whole, the OL is at least younger than the DL and therefore has more ability to get better in the long run. Both are huge needs. And I haven't said unequivocably that DL is a bigger need that OL. Just saying it's not as clear cut as everyone is making it out to be. Younger without much talent and why are you ignoring Peppers in there? At least now you admitting it may not be the bigger need.

    The Cubs don't get penalized wins if their bad players make more money than the bad players of other teams. Zambrano's contract is a sunk cost once he's on the team(which is assumed if you're talking about his performance on the year). His downside is a mediocre starter like he was in 2007, that's far better than the downside of most pitchers. That's not how sunk costs work. If he's good, the contract is both tolerable and movable, if he's bad or hurt, it becomes a problem. There's very clearly significant downside with Zambrano and there's no reason to pretend otherwise. He's a volatile commodity. But it's almost certainly worth it to hold onto him despite the risks.

    You don't make any sense. Not counting his contract in the discussion is stupid. If he's good, it's tolerable, if he sucks or gets injured that's a terrible burden on the tema.

He's already there, so it's not an upside. It's what he's been. And that downside is huge. He's not a stock where you say he's at his upside now, get rid of him. His actual value to the Cubs is very likely not equal to the return value you'd get in a trade. In which case you don't trade him, but that's not a fact and doesn't change the fact that he's got a big downside. You can argue against the nonsense of just getting rid of him for the sake of it without making up stuff.

Yeah, I don't get what Jersey is saying at all. Unless people think he's going to snap and actually murder someone on the field, I don't know what crazy bad downsides he has that other pitchers don't. He's had multiple run-ins and discipline issues, strange injuries and is a guy who works dangerously with a very high walk rate without a very high strikeout rate. He walks a tightrope with his persona and performance. The downside is very real and I don't see the point in pretending otherwise.

    Who cares about learning, and what if they don't want to do that right now? What if they want to hold back that silver bullet? You hire him as bench coach today and you get a boost in fan sentiment, you hire him as manager in 2 years and you probably get another boost. Unless he just refuses such a job I don't see the point in not wanting him there.

    You're treating an awful lot of assumptions as fact in that argument. None of it is "fact." Do you need me to hold your hand and specifically state "I think..." or "my opinion is..." whenever something is posted that is obviously someone's opinion? I still don't get how he's show yet again that his upside far outweighs any perceived downside. Opinion or not, I really don't see how that can be considered true at all. His upside isn't all that high. His downside is deep.

    An old 3-4 end with limited sack totals. I wouldn't complain, but I wouldn't campaign for it either.

    I think it's completely irresponsible and illogical to just say he's taken it well so far so no reason to think he can't keep taking it. And it's not just pass protection. They can't run block worth a crap. This team should never go for it on 4th and 1 because they can't get it. The offensive line has been ignored for far too long. The occasional stop gap journeyman does not solve anything. I'm not eliminating the possibility of drafting a tackle early, but it's very clearly not the number 1 priority. And I say it's not very clear that OL is the #1 priority. You can say whatever you want, but it is.

    It was a 50 year history in a dump that teams couldn't wait to leave, the only reason it was lamented was because it was in NY. Do you ever like anything? Anything at all? Bears victories.

    That's hard to do when you are a Packers fan and the Packers just lost to the Bears. Because that's what just happened a couple days ago.

    The Bears have found plenty of servicable players on the DL in the non-elite picks, and they've wasted far more high picks on that position. They may be showing they can win without a strong OL, but if you think the DL is weak then they are showing the same thing there. And they are clearly winning in spite of the offensive line, while the defensive line is at least contributing. If they could find a pass rushing specialist defensive tackle, okay, but those are very rare and far too specific a need to focus in on. They need 5 offensive lineman and have spent one meaningful pick on it in a decade. Cutler can't live forever getting knocked around like that. They don't have a superstar WR and don't look like they are going to get one. They absolutely have to fix the line if they want to try and get the most out of their investment in Cutler.

    Well, if you are able to get more like 95 cents on the dollar, it's not a bad idea at all. The cost savings and avoiding the downside risk that he obviously carries justify at least exploring options. Trading him Milton Bradley style is all kinds of wrong though.

    How is that a bigger need than O-line right now? I mean...yeah D-line is important...but they're putting pressure (if not getting sacks) without Tommie. O-line is a bigger area of need. --------------- It hurts me to say this, but has the coaching staff already earned itself another season? Even Lovie? They've started out better than anyone thought (even if this is somewhat of an illusion). I see a team that can really develop with some smart drafting. Hopefully, Lovie and Jerry will listen to their other coaches on draft day. I absolutely agree that offensive line remains priority number 1. They've spent a plethora of picks on defensive tackles the past several years, and early ones at that. Williams remains the only relatively high pick on the offensive line, and you need 5 of those on every play. What I don't understand is your note on the coaching staff. They've won three games. 9 should have been the bare minimum for acceptance in my opinion, which means they need to win 6 more. This team can absolutely fall apart in heartbeat and revert to the 2007-2009 form. 3-0 does not guarantee a playoff spot. A couple surprising wins does not guarantee they will avoid several disappointing losses. Let's wait before that question even gets asked, let alone answered.
