  1. Yea, that's a whole lot of money for 2 second basemen.
  2. It sounds like the call was by Vince Lloyd with Jack Brickhouse's famous "Hey Hey" in the background. Thanks for the audio, it brings back lots of good memories.
  3. To me he sounds correct not bitter. JH has upgraded the team on paper. But how much? Not much if you ask me. Pierre is an upgrade, but a slight upgrade Pierre as a leadoff man is a huge upgrade over Patterson. Jones is not an upgrade We don't know what we will get from Murton, but probably not enough power numbers to make a difference You're right about Murton, but he has hit everywhere he has been and his numbers last year project to 20-25 HRs over a whole season. Cedeno will hit but not walk much Walker will never make it out of ST JH Jr and Neifie will split time at 2nd. Lee will likely regress Lee worked hard to close a hole in his swing. If he has corrected it, why would he necessarily have to regress? Also, with better hitters in front of him, he may have many more RBIs. Will Aramis be healthy all year? The starting pitching remains a question mark with Wood on the shelf I don't think it is as bad as many people are making it out to be. I look for Williams to develop into a solid starter. The bullpen is upgraded, at least on paper. Bullpens are one of the hardest ascpects of a team to upgrade given the volitile nature of the bullpen from year to year.. Overall, I'd say about a .500 club. Certianly not what I was hoping for. I think they will be over .500, but the question is whether they can get to 90 wins and will the Cards come down to the 90-win plateau.
  4. I agree. If the Cubs stay close until midseason, they have the money to go out and bring in an expensive free-agent-to-be. Throwing $13-14 million per year at Furcal or $11 million per year at Millwood would have hampered their efforts for midseason and the next few years. Health is still the one wildcard that will determine whether this team wins 75 games or 90 games. Also, I don't think Hendry is done dealing this offseason. Sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't make. Personally, I'm very happy that players like Williams, Cedeno, and Murton are on this team and not being packaged to get some over-30 year old player making $15-25 million per year.
  5. I think they did better than a "D". They needed a leadoff man and 2 veterans in the bullpen and filled those 3 roles. They needed to improve speed and defense and they did. I wish they would have done better in RF, but a lot of what the Cubs have needed in the last few years is health. With another deal or two and health, the Cubs will be very competitive in 2006.
  6. There's no way the Brewers can win 95 games. That being said, the Cards are still the favorites and the Cubs need them to come down to the 90-win plateau. The Cubs and the Cards have a chance of winning 90 games, but not the Astros or Brewers and certainly not the Pirates or Reds.
  7. Cedeno is nowhere near a guarantee to give you that. Lugo is much better than bad. He can be pretty good, not great, or close to great. He's above average. But he probably doesn't have a lot of time left at above average, because it doesn't take long for average-to-above-average middle infielders to lose their value. I stated earlier in this post: Cedeno will not only give you a good season this year, he will match Furcal's best numbers in 2-3 years thereby being much better than Lugo. The only reason to trade for Lugo is to guarantee a spot on the bench for Perez.
  8. Compare Macias to other team's 25th man and he's not as bad as everyone makes him out to be, but compare him to every other team's 10th position player (the way Baker used him) and he's horrible. I will agree that Hendry's biggest fault is not firing Baker or at least insisting that Baker play certain players.
  9. I've said it in many other posts: Cedeno, given the chance, will not only have a good season this year, but will be comparable to Furcal's best numbers within 2-3 years.
  10. You are absolutely right. Macias as a 25th man and not as the 1st bat off the bench, substitute CF, or top-of-the-lineup hitter makes some sense. For those Hendry haters out there, I contend that if Baker used the players as they were supposed to be used the team record would have been 8-10 games better. Look at how much of the season was wasted on finding a closer, figuring out other roles in the bullpen, using players like Perez, Patterson, and Macias at the top of the lineup, etc.
  11. Hendry had to match contract offers for Jones (3 years) to get him. If Pie is ready next year, Jones will be traded. There should be a few teams that want him at $10 million over 2 years since he had better offers than that this year.
  12. While I would love to have another guy who can hit HRs, I think that Pierre leading off with a decent #2 hitter will account for quite a few more runs being scored. The Cubs will be competitive if certain players can avoid the DL (Wood, Prior, Ramirez, etc.), Murton and Cedeno get to play and perform at a decent level, and DLee and ARam do their thing. Many posters (including me) think the Cubs could win 90 games. Now if the Cards would come down to that level (very possible), we have a shot.
  13. Wait them out JH. Later offer them a ton of prospects without Prior.
  14. You and I would. Unfortunately, it comes down to Colletti and Hendry. Jmo but it comes down to McCourt not wanting to take another beating from the LA media. They'll have to get a nice return if they deal off Kent. Jmo again, but Drew's more likely. So let's get Drew.
  15. I tend to agree with what most of you have written, but part of closing that 20 game gap has to come from the Cards. The Cubs (and the other teams) are not in the 95+ win league, but hopefully the Cards will not win that many games either. I look for the Cards to come back down to the 88-90 win level and then the Cubs could compete for the division.
  16. Why are so many of you down on Murton? It seems to me that all I'm reading is platoon him, trade him, or make him the 4th OF. I think Murton has shown that he could hit at every level he has played at. He's not necessarily a power hitter, but his numbers from last year would project to 20-25 HRs over a full year. I realize that he was "protected" from some RH pitchers last year, but he didn't put up all of those great numbers in the minors by facing only LH pitching. Between Murton and Cedeno, I think the Cubs have 2 young players who will have long and solid careers and need to be given the chance to show their stuff. Of course, if the Cubs can get someone like Dunn only by including someone like Murton, then I understand.
  17. It seems to me that we have an excellent #2 hitter by the name of Todd Walker.
  18. Jones has a 3-year contract, but that doesn't mean he'll be with the Cubs for 3 years. Assuming Pie is ready next year, Jones should be a very tradeable commodity as a corner OF signed for $10 million over 2 years. Pie may also find himself in a platoon with Jones for a year or so. If Pie is ready, he'll play regularly. After all of the ballyhooing about Pie and refusing to trade him, he isn't going to start out in a platoon situation with a less-than-average RF.
  19. Jones has a 3-year contract, but that doesn't mean he'll be with the Cubs for 3 years. Assuming Pie is ready next year, Jones should be a very tradeable commodity as a corner OF signed for $10 million over 2 years.
  20. so far as it affects his production, i'm not worried. he's a professional and he'll give 100%. now, i don't know how it will affect his contract negotiations in the future, and that's really the only thing to worry about. oh well, we'll probably have a new GM by then anyway, so i doubt it will have any negative effect. For future negotiations, it's to his advantage to have solid seasons. He'll be looking for a big contract from the Cubs (or somebody else) and "potential" won't get it.
  21. He makes outrageous proposals to get all of us to read his column. I think he's an idiot, but I read his column to verify that fact.
  22. For all you Hendry haters, just think if hil Rogers was the GM.
  23. I'm hoping that JH can wait long enough and the Orioles will see that their not going to get the price they want for Tejada. Hopefully, then the price will come down to young players and prospects (excluding Prior). Also, a 3-team deal might be worked out (like the mentioned A's deal) where a ton of prospects goes in a deal involving some players like Zito and Tejada.
