  1. I don't think it had anything to do with Baker. The Tribune saw the empty seats in September and saw the Sox make inroads into their popularity and realized they had to do something. Also, the rumored sale of the Tribune might have something to do with it.
  2. Honestly, the Drew thing is possible, but not all that probable. The Zito thing is ridiculous. Why is it so ridiculous that Zito called Hendry. If I was a FA and saw the money Hendry is throwing around, I'd call him in a second.
  3. May I be the first to predict that the Cubs, win or lose in 2007, will announce a large increase in ticket prices for 2008.
  4. Amen! I have posted many times saying basically the same thing. Hendry is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. If the numbers are correct, he gave Soriano numbers he couldn't refuse. The longer you leave him in the free agent market, the more things that could happen.
  5. Well, if it's true, Hendry is answering all of the critics who complain he doesn't get any top FAs. Also, I guess he doesn't just overpay for mediocre players.
  6. Are they crazy? Hopefully the last three years are team's option. Whatever goodwill with other GMs Hendry earned by signing ARam at below market will be out the window with this deal. Hendry is probably thinking that Soriano wins the WS for us or he's somebody else's salary problem for the last 6 years.
  7. In today's Tribune, Kenny Williams is upset with some of the rumors about the White Sox that are being spread. One rumor had Garcia going to the Angels for Santana. Dream on Kenny.
  8. WoW I had listed him as a guy that Hendry should have went after instead of Derosa but now that I see he wants two years and 9 million a season I think Hendrys deal for Derosa keeps looking OK. Not Terrible. Looking at the early market returns, he would be crazy not to ask for $18 million over 2 years. He probably won't get it, but he can ask.
  9. I'm hoping that all of Hendry's positive statements about Murton are true and he won't be traded. If he is traded, it had better be for a superstar because I think a lot of baseball people think very highly of Murton's potential.
  10. Have Izturis play a really deep SS.
  11. On the other hand, while Drew is a very good, very productive hitter, Manny is and has been significantly more productive at the plate. I agree, but the cost in prospects, his attitude, and his defense makes me lean more toward Drew. Also, Drew fills a hole (CF) and doesn't replace a productive hitter (Murton). The real catch to me is the 3 prospects mentioned in the trade.
  12. I don't think it's enough. There's still only 2 legit power threats in Lee & Ram in the middle of the order. You've got to consider Jones a power threat don't you? He's not a #3 hitter, but for the 3rd or 4th bat in the lineup he's not bad. Barrett falls in as a quality bat too...its not the 27 yankees, but it has the potential to be pretty solid. With 6 out of the 8 guys in the lineup (minus Izturis and Derosa), you have the potential for 160 HRs. right there.
  13. Pierre's speed should come in handy getting to the Giants' GM first.
  14. If the deal is Veal or Gallagher, Pie, and one of Marshall/Mateo/Marmal/Ryu/Guzman, sign me up. I dunno if I'd include both Veal and Gallagher. If I am going to assume Manny's contract and give up my three best prospects, I'd want something additional in return or at least want the Sox to assume responsibility for 33-40% of the remaining money on Manny's deal. This really makes the argument for Drew. Giving up 3 of our best prospects for Manny plus paying his salary plus dealing with his lousy defense and crazy attitude as opposed to signing Drew for about the same money, keeping the prospects, and dealing with his injury history. Using those arguments, I'd go for Drew.
  15. Those stats reflect him as a reliever. He might use more pitches as a starter. Most relievers get by with 2 good pitches.
  16. Ditto. I, too, live in Stl, and I don't want to take any chances with Marquis. If Duncan couldn't fix him, forget about it. He's stubborn, 100% unpredictable, and has a major problem keeping the ball down - which is the only way he succeeds. I do worry that Mazzone and Duncan gave up on him. Now we'll find out whether Rothschild is worthy of his reputation.
  17. Ben Maller is reporting that the Angels are ready to pay Soriano what he is asking for, but some GMs think Soriano wants to stay on the East coast. Also, he is saying that the Red Sox are ready to sign Drew at $48 million over 4 years. I can't believe Drew would sign this early for that number unless he really wants to play for the Red Sox. Take both rumors as just that....rumors.
  18. As some of you have posted, getting rid of Izturis, Jones, and Dempster plus Rusch hopefully retiring totals about $15 million. I would think that there is a market for each of those guys especially if the asking price isn't too high (prospects).
  19. Some of you are getting downright greedy talking about Drew and Soriano. I think we'll be lucky to get one of them. With the rumored numbers, I think I would go for Drew and save $30 million. You know $30 million here and $30 million there and pretty soon you have a lot of money.
  20. Don't forget that adding Marquis gives us 2 more bats off of the bench (with Zambrano).
  21. Since very few posters gave him props for signing his own free agents (ARam, Wood, and Miller), I would think he should be ahead of the GMs that couldn't even sign their own free agents (Soriano, Drew, Schmidt, Zito, CLee, etc.). What? You want to rank him ahead of Beane because he managed to resign Ramirez but Beane didn't resign Zito? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. All I'm saying is that I think Hendry has done a good job so far and deserves some props. I can imagine the 100+ thread of criticism if he let someone like Zito walk, while Beane (and others) come out smelling like a rose.
  22. Since very few posters gave him props for signing his own free agents (ARam, Wood, and Miller), I would think he should be ahead of the GMs that couldn't even sign their own free agents (Soriano, Drew, Schmidt, Zito, CLee, etc.).
  23. I keep thinking that Hendry might go after Tejada again, but I don't know what players would be offered. The deal you mentioned would be great even if we had to throw in a prospect. Sign Drew and maybe Derosa could play OF with Theriot at 2B or pick up someone like Craig Wilson for RF.
  24. Fantastic idea on both ends.
