    All of this discussion about the WS stockpiling young pitchers to make a run at ARod, A. Jones, Wells, or Tejada doesn't make sense. Even if they get one of these guys, they won't have the pitching to win next year and then Dye, A. Jones, Wells, or Tejada leave for free agency. Williams had better have something lined up because his starters are a valuable commodity this offseason and he should be getting more in return for them.

    This was 24 hours after KW said he might not trade any starters and McCarthy might start in AAA. I wrote then that he was full of it. I agree that unless the Sox have another trade lined up, this was a stupid trade. In this market, Garcia was a valuable commodity. I would like to know what happened to the Crede/Garcia for Figgins/Santana trade rumor. That would have been a great trade for both teams. The Sox would have had a proven 23 year-old starter plus the speedy CF they need. With that trade they would have filled two holes while the trade they made possibly helps in the future. One poster wrote that the Sox can afford to wait for young pitching, but I don't believe that. Dye will be leaving, Thome is old and injury prone, and AJ and Konerko might regress.

    A trade for A. Jones and Hudson would be just what the Cubs need. Starting with JJones, a ton of young pitching, and whatever else they might need in a package that would solve both our pitching and CF problems. The money would be $13.5 million for A. Jones (minus the 4-5 million for JJones) and $6/13/13/12 (1 million mutual option) million. The total cost for Hudson (assuming the Cubs refuse the 4th year option) would be $33 million over 3 years. A. Jones would be $9.5 million for one year and then Pie takes over in 2008. This sounds quite a bit better than throwing $80 million over 4 years to Meche and Lilly plus a few million to Lofton.     If the Cubs can't get Schmidt, they should get pitching through trades. The thought of signing Lilly and Meche combined for $80 million over the next 4 years makes me sick. Go after Jennings, Westbrook, one of the Pirate pitchers, or sign Suppan.

    i dont think marmol is going anywhere if this statement is at all accurate: "the Cubs value Marmol almost as much as Rich Hill, making him essentially untouchable." perhaps marshall for church would be a better fit. I'm not singling out Marmol, but the Cubs strong point on the trade front is young pitching and we can't hold onto all of them especially if they sign these FAs to 4-year deals. It looks like Marmol, Hill, and Pie are "untouchable" and it sounds like Veal, Pawalek, Gallagher, and a few others are considered "can't miss". I love the thought of developing our own players, but the window of opportunity to win the WS might only be the next year or two and the Cubs need to take advantage of the weak NL Central now.

    If the Cubs can't get Schmidt, I hope they get pitching through a trade rather than 4 years and $40 million on some mediocre #4 starter. Trade for Jennings, Westbrook, or somebody that would put up the same numbers for less money and/or years. I'm starting to believe that some of our young pitchers along with Cotts might put up comparable numbers to Meche, Lilly, etc.

    Honestly, I think at the deadline. I think the needs of teams are larger the closer it gets to the end of the season. You don't see a lot of big name prospects changing teams in the offseason. It's at the deadline when teams are desperate to make a push and know their team isn't good enough as it is. I think most teams without payroll issues and absolute black holes on their starting roster and rotation are ok with competing with what they have now. Once the games are played, teams will know what their needs are and if they are contenders or not. You're probably right, but a player like Wells sure could help a team for the first half of the season too. With him from day one, you might not be as desperate for help at the deadline.

    I agree 100%. Tampa needs to realize that they have the start of a very good young team, but they need pitching. If they continue to overprice their players, they will continue to lose.

    Williams is playing the same game that the agents play.....trying to drive up the price. There is no way the White Sox start the season with the same 5 starters and Brandon McCarthy starting at AAA like Williams mentioned in today's Tribune. The Sox have a few holes and 5 experienced starters, a very good young pitcher to replace one of them, and 25 teams looking for starting pitchers. KW is playing rope-a-dope.

    Didn't ITI say that we'd only sign one starter and then trade for one? Or was that only speculation? I would think Hendry is going to make some kind of deal. He has all of those young pitchers listening to the rumors of signing a few starters to 4-year contracts. Something has to give. Also, with the ridiculous numbers the free agents are getting, I would rather go the trade route.

    Yeah, and if the Cubs don't put stock in it then it must not be important. The Cubs have an unusually high need for OBP ability, because of their unusually low collection of OBP. I never said OBP wasn't important, nor do I disagree about the Cubs' need for OBP. Just saying that because Dunn does excel at one skill that the Cubs frustratingly do not, many tend to overlook his high strikeout/low BA, his horrible defense, and a body-type that suggest he might not age gracefully. He seems to be the classic Bill Jamesian example of a young player with old man skills. Not saying that I wouldn't mind the Cubs picking him up and sticking him in left for a couple of years (his future is as a 1B/DH), but I don't value him as much as others seem to do. I'm not a Dunn fan at all, but if they could get him very cheap then I'd take him. That will never happen, so I agree than we should quit discussing Dunn. The Reds would want way too much for him especially within the division.

    You may be right, but if the a good opportunity came up to acquire Tejada or ARod, I think you would see Hendry fall out of love with him very quickly.

    I agree! I highly, highly doubt they trade Hall. I agree, but it's worth Hendry calling to ask. We have plenty of young pitching to offer them.

    i agree... i would love this... but DEFENSE??? :shock: Not much worse than Murton in LF. Bonds was once a Gold Glove OF, something Murton will never be. I'd trade Murton for a pitcher. And I was once young and had hair.

    The thought of Cirillo at SS is kind of scary. I know he could do the corners, but I'm not aware of him playing middle infield especially now that he's older. I agree that he would be a good bat off the bench.
