Middlebrooks had an OPS+ of 117 before he got hurt. Jed Lowrie sits at 116, Pedroia - 101, Rizzo - 120, Reddick - 123. Granted Lavarnway hasn't played much in the big leagues this year, and Ellsbury and Kalish have been hurt most of the season. But that lineup doesn't suck. A team constructed solely of homegrown players would indeed suck, and the process of having that team built would be awful for Cubs fans. He made it clear they joked about it and it is impossible. I think it would be extremely difficult to pull something like that off. Your scouting and player developement would have to be off the charts elite better than everyone else caliber and even then would have to have a lot of just plain luck for the pieces to all fall in place. never mind that it would take a very very long time to do it. I think the plan is to build a core of homegrown young talent they've stated that in the past. Then you augment that with trades and free agents till you get the right mix.
