  1. Z's velocity cost him 2 Ks the first two ABs of this inning, IMO. Eventually he got Dye to pop out, but his 3 pay-off pitches were fastballs between 88 and 92. Z then went to several breaking balls on the following hitter which resulted in a walk. If he'd have his normal plus fastball (94-96) this inning would be over.
  2. Let's just hope we don't have to hear any "and you can put it on the board....yee-ess!" It was funny back around 1996 or so.
  3. oh wait...I guess walks don't clog the bases after all.
  4. This Masset kid's got the slowest delivery ever.
  5. Nice to see Z get through the 1st unscathed, but I have to admit I'm skeptical about his velocity. Saw one pitch make it to 92; the rest were 87-90ish.
  6. Really? Huh. Looks OK on the ol' weather map... http://image.weather.com/images/maps/current/curwx_600x405.jpg
  7. wow, that's Randolph's version of the "Dusty Baker Patented Getaway Day Forfeit Lineup" Seriously. Hope everyone has Vargas and Guzman on their fantasy teams.
  8. Actually think you might replace the 2nd Yankees with the San Francisco Fighting Barry Bonds's. Pretty sure that club is just Barry and a bunch of photographers, trainers, and maybe a bat boy at this point.
  9. Tough to mount any sort of legitimate comeback threat with Angel Pagan and Henry Blanco in your lineup.
  10. Open-ended contract situation's gotta be on his mind. Granted he's always been a slow starter, but this is getting ridiculous.
  11. Wow, that was comical. Otis Nixon-esque.
  12. Don't forget Eric Karros, Mark Grudzielanek, and Shawn Estes. You forgot Neifi Perez and Glendon Rusch. No list is complete without Jeff Fassero.
  13. Jacque 0-4 with 4 LOB. Ouch. When your entire lineup combines for 2 walks and 14 LOB, you probably won't win many games. Heckuva start by Marquis, the pen just couldn't hold it. Clutch AB by Jeff Conine to turn the tide... We'll be fine and yes, it's only 1 game. Lots of LOB the whole series, not enough patience at the plate, 2 excellent performances by our starters and 1 bullpen breakdown. Looking forward to see our hitters operate in a warmer climate...
  14. Oddly, the two AL teams Lilly struggled with the most last season were Kansas City (10 ER in 10.1 IP) and Tampa Bay (10 ER in 13.1 IP). Over the past 3 years he was actually quite good against the Red Sox, too- 3.27 ERA in 14 starts, allowing 73 hits in 85.1 IP an 82:36 K:BB mark. Never did too hot against the Yankees though...then again who does. Either way, being in the NL Central should certainly help; anyone checked out the Cardinals' offense lately? 8-)
  15. Thanks guys. I've been a Cubs fan since the year we began 0-14, oddly (1997, I believe?). Was born in Wheaton, IL but moved to South Carolina as a youngster and have followed our boys ever since. I've been reading this site for about a year now, but wanted to wait and get a feel for how folks posted, general level of knowledge exhibited, board temperment, all that stuff, before I created an account and started posting myself. Looking forward to a (hopefully) good year.
  16. Agreed. I actually think this is one of those instances where 'experts' will often pick out bullpen as a team's projected weakness by default simply to get by without having to do any substantive research. Seems like every manager and GM would love 'help' with their bullpen anyway, so in the absence of actually digging up legit and quantifiable holes on a team, writers can just throw out bullpen and be done with it. Sort of reminiscent of how during the midst of the NFL season you hear from the 'experts' that literally every contending team 'needs help in the secondary.' Just sounds convenient, and frankly no team is fully satisfied with its secondary (or bullpen) ever to begin with, so they just mention that and move on. Just my uninformed guess since, as you said, our bullpen was quite productive last year and should theoretically only improve this season.
