Everyone wants to look at Jeff as a more finshed project out of college but he's not it's amazing how fast he has shot through the minors considering how little he had thrown before being drafted. Getting Jeff up in late july and pitching him out of the pen limits his Innings this year also.
The issue becomes if you get another 2b, then Fontenot is off the roster unless you go to 11 pitchers. The same with finding a RF/CF, one of Edmonds/Johnson would have to go...or else Fontenot will have to go. With the way the roster is constructed, there's not an easy place to add offense unless you dump one of Ward/Fontenot/Edmonds/Johnson from the roster. As good as Ward has been at times , he still can barely run the bases or play the outfield. He might have some vaule to an AL team. With Fontentot hitting the way he has been along with Edmonds coming off the bench and Hoff waiting in the minors Ward is expendable.
Hendry could add some more offense at second base (Kent/Roberts and move Derosa to platoon with Fukodome and be the team's super sub. Hendry could also find a RF or CF and make Edmonds/Johnson role players off the bench.
Does anyone else have a feeling Hendry might somehow get creative with his pitching depth and make himself another blockbuster deal before the deadline?
If it's not health related and the Cubs and Carlos are confident thats not the issue sending him down now would be the right time to work with Riggins. Those 15 innings in winter ball where a bad idea. Ascanio should some see time now so Lou can get an idea if this kids ready while at the same time with break coming up give Marmol a chance to rest his arm.
Ascanio,Veal,Ceda, Castilla, Wuertz,Hart, all have some vaule on the market . One advantage Hendry has will be his ability to still add payroll which quite a few clubs might not be able to.
Instead of giving anything for Millar I would rather gamble on Sexson for right handed pop off the bench for free. Blake or Eckstein would be nice upgrades for the bench.
when has sexson ever been linked to roids. He's a monster at 6'8 240 . Never would have called him a roider, he had a terrible year last year and a terrible first half this year .Could someone fix his mechanics and that huge swing. Sure why not . Does he have a spot on this team probably not.
I really think we could still see a Marquis with us eating some cash going to the Padres for Maddux. We might have to throw in a low level prospect to get it done which I have no problem with.
I wouldn't mind Maddux if Hendry finds a way to make the Padres take Marquis. I think Hendry has plenty of parts and cash to net him a frontline starter from some team come July. Hopefully he can find a way to get another lights out bullpen arm from somewhere and a right handed power bat for the bench. Please Hendry make this move sooner rather than later.
