    Even if you base it off their entire careers, Theriot has a better OPS than Cabrera. He has a huge advantage in OBP. and cabrera is a very good fielder at the most important defensive position, whereas theriot is fairly lousy. Given your defense of Theriot so far this season (seems like you may have some of us eating crow appetizers at the very least), I find your objectivity refreshing.

    This isn't the first place I've seen comments like this. With this kind of attitude, the trade deadline could be a fun and interesting time for us. Also, it's probably wise for us not to get too attached to our minor leaguers. A lot of those guys could be moving on. Should be a good time in the Transactions forum this summer. :D

    OK, I can understand the desire to not see sub-par performances out of players, but the DH strikes me as totally arbitrary in the grand scheme of things. Why not change the rules so that you have a lineup of only 4 Adams Dunns as hitters and only Ozzie Smiths as fielders ( I recognize why this doesn't work even theoretically, and it supports my argument)? I mean, this would leave all kinds of flexibility for the pitching staff! One of the things I appreciate most about baseball is that it requires a wide range of athletic abilities and skills. Balancing this range of abilities is key to building a winning team. Once you over-specialize, you begin to reduce the game to the point where, beyond the obvious implications for player development, it becomes a sport not of skilled athletes, but of specific tradesmen. Far less interesting to me. Maybe that's just me.

    Also, contrary to the view of some here, I think there is merit to counting stats relative to rate stats. However, saves, like RBI, are far too team dependent. Anyway, staying healthy and effective for a good team the whole season is worth something, right?

    Companies can sell subsidiaries in which they have a very low basis through tax-efficient transactions like Reverse Morris Trusts and tax free spins to shareholders, but they usually involve the parent company or its shareholders receiving stock consideration. There are some debt + derivative trades that can allow for tax-efficient monetizations, but it is unlikely you could do it with an asset like this. Since it seems that the Trib needs/prefers cash consideration, I highly doubt they can find a way to make this a tax-efficient sale. The only thing I can think of is doing some kind of securitization of revenue streams or licensing fees as part of the deal. That could be a possibility. You're smarter than me. Didn't mean for the post to come across as know-it-all or whatever. My apologies if it did. I work in that field, so the lingo is what I'm used to :blush:

    eww, I dont buy that factor in the MLB playoffs. Anyway, I still think one of the AL central pre-season power houses will get hot at the right time. No basis for that guess though.

    Exactly, uncertainty with the starting staff is what you would expect to ignite losing streaks. Frankly, I do believe that this staff will yield a moderate losing streak at some point soon, but this offense has found a way to do some pretty incredible things so far (though not in this most recent series)

    No doubt. He is even more annoying in HD. I thought for a second Morgan was going to mention OBP while talking about the Cubs' league leading offense, but no such luck. I hope to not throw something at the TV today. That would be a minor victory.

    True, they could easily be sitting at 3 over on the road rather than 3 under, and nobody would be talking about this. They have also gotten a couple of lucky breaks at home. Also - this was referenced on the last broadcast - the team has a number of players with much better career home splits than road spilts. I don't see cheating as a realistic possibility here.

    Pat Hughes commenting on how the Cubs have never had a lead of 4.5 games in the central as long as he and Ron have been broadcasting together. But I'm pretty sure the opened up a 6 game lead in the first half of 2001. Anyone else remember this?

    Meh, last two weeks, he's OPSing over 1.000. I certainly dont mind that in the spot he is in. Lets see if it lasts.
