  1. I'm with Len. The Allstar outing has really helped Marmol's confidence. Nasty since then.
  2. Hopefully a DeRo 2-run bomb will make the decision easier.
  3. How about a Geowning? Not this time, but someone will soon be Ge-owned
  4. Way off game thread topic, but Brian - was it you who came up with the nickname for Bowen last year? Something along the lines of Bowen is the Bowner. He gives Bownings? Damn that was funny. Can't believe what the catching situation looked like just a year ago before the arrival of one mascara wearing messiah (not Edmonds).
  5. Are you shocked that it is so low or wondering why he still has a job in the majors? I think we know the answer to the latter all too well. that low, at the end he was just terrible for the Cubs but he wasn't .197 Hey man, avg isn't all that meaningful. he is getting on base at above a .200 clip.
  6. Only 33 pitches through 3. Awesome playing DBR.
  7. Are you shocked that it is so low or wondering why he still has a job in the majors? I think we know the answer to the latter all too well.
  8. Very well put. Though Dempster has put up numbers that were on the very high end of projections for Hill.
  9. arguing with Joe West about the delay over the lights being turned on I would not have been able to guess that I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't witnessed it live He really is sterile. :-k :?: :!:
  10. Damn straight. Very surprised to see Fukudome that high. Guess his OBP is still propping up the RC.
  11. Answer: Not very. Question: Which of Tapani's 19 wins would you say " don't matter " ? That's not the point. It never has been. Nobody is saying wins don't matter. Of course they do. Just that W-L is not an accurate stat for judging the worth of pitchers. I agree that it is not all that useful. Tapani's 98 season always stuck out to me as one the bucked the trend. It was not always run support that won him games. I haven't done this, and I was just throwing it out there, but take a look at the leverage index across game logs from that year. I'm guessing you'll see a huge variation in leverage across the season which, to me, lends itself to a disproportionate win total. But in my mind (and I'm probably guilty of selective memory) he was very effective in winning games that year.
  12. Any chance you could splice that ranking for position players with the Edmonds/Johnson platoon as a single entry for the Cubs this season?
  13. That's fine...but I can get that same generalized "who's better than who" info from ERA, right? So what value does the Win/Loss record give you that I can't get from another stat? You can say that about every stat that isn't what you consider the most valuable stat. What value does OBP have when I can look at EqA? Well for one, many, many more people know what OBP is. This isn't a "this stat is better than that stat" for me. It's just that I think W/L gives more misinformation than valuable information and can actually be more hindrance than help. It goes back to application of it, if applied properly, it does have value. Question, without stating my opinion regarding W/L as a stat - How effective was Kevin Tapani as a pitcher in 1998?
  14. I'd prefer everyday players as MVP candidates. The VORP numbers are giving cumulative season totals, but over the last 2 and a half months, especially given the lack of power from the middle of the order, I'd have to go with Edmonds. Yes, you can argue he is a platoon player, but his contributions have been astounding. Can I nominate the Edmonds/Johnson platoon as MVP? Also - under/over on how many days until Edmonds passes Lee and Ramirez in HRs?
  15. If I'm going to be completely honest, given the Cubs' history (I know it doesn't matter for this year), I'm not sure I understand why Cards fans view this as a major rivalry. Honestly, aside from the 3 playoff appearances over the last 10 years, it's not like we always posed a huge threat to them in the division. I get why WE consider the Cards a rival, but if another team had the lack of success that the Cubs have over the years, I wouldn't care enough about them to consider them a hated rival. I'm sure I'm in the minority here. But what real reason does this dude have for his hatred of the Cubs? Maybe I only consider rivalries meaningful when both team actually have a proven track record of success. And frankly, that is pretty new to this organization.
  16. Oh yeah, he was definitely rocking the pick up eyes.
  17. The people who shelled out for the new stadium? Edit: wow, I'm late on my comment
  18. Good to see Lee hitting some balls with authority.
  19. hahaha, he just busted out "Grand Slam territory". And he couldn't even do the math right.
  20. Playing devil's advocate here, what if the Rays get to/or win the World Series? Does this award count the postseason? Shapiro won it over Kenny Williams in 2005.
  21. and sinker and change And whatever pitch gets hit on the fly to him with a runner on third and less than two outs in a close game.
