  1. Because he's a solid, durable pitcher. And he's getting the same deal as Lilly, when he's a way better pitcher than Lilly. Please make some attempt to quantify that statement.
  2. Ceiling (you can teach delivery, movement, and command but not a fastball that touches 97 mph) and the fact that our system thins out so quickly after Pie, Veal, and EPatt. :( It's pretty sad when two of your draft picks (a 1st and 5th rounder) easily make your top 10 prospects list. what about sean g? I love the guy. He exceeds expectations and comes to camp ready to beat some hiney (unlike Pawelek). His ceiling just isn't that high, but he has a great chance of reaching it if last season is any indication of things to come. All those walks at AA scare me, but he managed to get himself out of a lot of trouble by pitching instead of throwing. A very good sign, IMO. His BB rates will return to normal. I just don't see his ceiling as being that high, even if it did take a jump this past season.
  3. SS: Izturis 2B: DeRosa Theriot is going to get plenty of time. I don't want to see Cedeno in Wrigley ever again, even in a backup role.
  4. Never before heard that his FB was flat. That can be fixed if he decides to pursue baseball for more than a couple months a year.
  5. Long term, I like Danks better than McCarthy. Danks season stats look worse, but he usually sucks the first 5-10 starts at each new level, then adjusts. Danks has better stuff anyway.
  6. No thanks. His cheap years are over (most expensive first time arbi eligible player at the time). He isn't worth giving up the prospects necessary to get him.

  8. Nope. Career numbers: Lilly: 8.73 H/9, 1.38 HR/9, 3.67 BB/9, 7.68 K/9, 2.09 K/BB, 1.38 WHIP Suppan: 9.79 H/9, 1.19 HR/9, 2.95 BB/9, 5.06 K/9, 1.72 K/BB, 1.42 WHIP Factor in that Lilly pitched in the AL East for most of his career and in Toronto, a notorious bandbox (inflates HR numbers)...Lilly is the better pitcher. Suppan is more durable though, I'll give you that.
  9. I'd test him for 'roids before offering him a contract.
  10. The Cubs organization hates Rich Hill. Here's proof. I may be missing the point here, or maybe I'm not getting the possible sarcasm, but I don't see any hate for Rich Hill in this article. This was posted July 18, 2006 and at that time this is would be a positive thing to say about a struggling young pitcher. It was sarcasm. There is this conspiracy theory that the Cubs organization hates Rich Hill and that's why he didn't spend all last season in the bigs.
  11. dude your sig, come on now. Seriously. What the hell is that all about? Tree is gay. I know. It shocked me too.
  12. I sure did. It's hard not to when someone pitches as flat out awesome as he has for the Cubs. It's not like he's come across as some kind of terrible human being...why wouldn't people "warm up" to him? I love Prior.
  13. That's a very good question. But, if this contract gets nixed, I'm sure we'll get to hear all about it. My guess is that Boston didn't really want to pay for Manny, Mats, Lugo AND Drew and they're attempting to find a way out of the Drew deal. Why would they offer Drew a contract in the first place if they didn't intend to honor it? Covering all the bases? I don't know. There were many indications that Boston wanted to move Manny. That didn't happen. They won the bid for Matsusaka. They apparently forgot that Boras was his client, so getting off cheap wasn't going to happen. Now the outfield is a little too deep and weeks later, Drew's contract has issues? It's odd. I don't know all the inner workings of a baseball teams front office, but I could understand their wanting out of a deal if a Manny trade didn't end up happening. They've spent big bucks this offseason. I can't say I'd shed any tears for Drew, but that would be the kiss of death for future FA signings in Boston. Boras (Drew's agent, right?) would probably hold a grudge as well. That eliminates a whole class of future FA talent. Not a good move.

  16. 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003 That was 4 seasons ago. Celebrate the back to back over .500 acccomplishment all you want, the fact is the Cubs have lost more than they've won with Hendry as a GM, and they've gotten considerably worse the more moves he's made. 88 and 89 win seasons are hardly an accomplishment, especially for a team that was a top 3 payroll in the NL during thoses seasons. And when you top off those seasons with back to back sub .500 campaigns, you lose whatever minimal amount of goodwill you've built up (unless the people who are handing out the goodwill are so excited about back to back .500 seasons that they don't really care about back to back sub .500 seasons. This should be a 90 win team every year, with multiple 95+ win seasons. The inability to reach that point is the GM's responsibility. The word was "years" not "seasons." 3 years.
  17. They might argue over which toolsy gold glover hits the best with RISP, but the end result is the same. They keep making the same mistakes. Yeah, mistakes like acquiring DLee, Ramirez, Murton, Barrett, and Howry. Mistakes like developing Zambrano, Hill, Wuertz, Ohman, Wood, and Prior. These guys are so incompetent. Why do they even have jobs? I could do better with my elementary knowledge of statistics! i know, the cubs have been totally awesome since hendry took over! 5 outs from the WS. Hendry hasn't done jack. FIRE HIM NOW! Oh, and viva la revolution! Hoorary for almost! Hooray for 4 years ago! More like 3, but who's counting? Oh and 2004 was pretty darn good too. 2 bad years. It's the guillotine for Hendry. Liberty, equality, fraternity, or death! Scouts are an affront to liberty. Equality now!

  20. It might be better to look at rates and averages rather than BB totals as there are more PA in the early innings.
  21. Tim Wilken was an outsider. Yes, so was Lou. I guess I shouldn't have said "start bringing", rather, keep bringing. I just don't see the point in promoting a special assistant to the GM to assistant GM. I'd rather they get people from outside the organization for such an important position. I wasn't expecting much, but it would have been nice to see them try out some opposing viewpoints, instead of going down the same road that's led them nowhere. Hendry and his special assistants have different views all the time over players. It's not a "group think" organization. Just b/c they're not on the forefront with the use of stats doesn't mean they don't accept opposing viewpoints. BTW, those viewpoints almost got us to the WS in '03. It may be popular to complain about the last 2 seasons, but '03 and '04 were fantastic.
  22. Wood dominated as a reliever. The only doubts I have about sticking him in as closer would be the workload. But that problem is easy to work around with Howry, Eyre, and Wuertz.
  23. Baseball America and all the scouts they talked to.
  24. Marquis was about 6 innings from doing it. 5 runs immediately every game is quite extreme, and it's beyond the realm of this discussion. But a guy doesn't have to give up 5 to do a bad job. But if you pay a guy several million to be a 200 inning guy, it's going to take a lot of suckiness on his part, and a lot of good pitching by any potential replacement, to convince most managers to make the switch. Highly paid bad pitchers get more than their fair shot at racking up the innings. John Schuerholz thinks IP is one of the most important stats in evaluating a pitcher.
