  1. Somewhat along these lines, I've started noticing the some of the prospects we had to pretend to like back before we had real prospects start popping up around the league. Tony Zych, Marwin Gonzalez, Ronald Torreyes, Jay Jackson (though he's in Japan this year) I was always rooting for Zych, who is the last player in baseball history alphabetically.
  2. Tough chance for Russell - his throw was short and then took a weird hop past Rizzo - still wouldn't have been an error except it bounced through a hole in the fence in front of the Rockies dugout. Fix the damn hole grounds crew - wth?
  3. Darwin Barney is still playing too. Not that he's that old but he has always been pretty terrible.
  4. Fowler. LaStella is up though which is what you were after Russell's ball carried to the track into the wind in RC.
  5. Qualls has already thrown 12 pitches . . .
  6. it would be great to play teams right after the cubs play them. sooo many pitches.
  7. no, they haven't. the cubs have hit nothing hard.
  8. e-3 shows up as a hit on ESPN.com yea, I'm mostly kidding. it was scored a hit but the first baseman dove and the ball bounced out of his glove. If he just goes to the bag, the second baseman makes an easy play
  9. Rizzo ought to just stick with Castro's walkup - Taylor Swift is clearly bad mojo
  10. This isn't a serious post is it? Well it is a game against the Rockies in mid-April. Gotta go all out to win. This was kind of my thought - further down the road or if further behind, I might have pinch hit there.
  11. you mean the bummed reaction to the pop out? Fans should be stoic, and only react to home runs, but only when they clear the fence, and not before. and only if they are meaningful
  12. I'm not really arguing the call but if the intent is to avoid a collision, you shouldn't have to have a collision to get the call . . . is Len just way off here?
  13. I think that's always true on the flyballs until there is a homerun then people start to see the difference. The wind is also killing everything in the air. Montero hit that pretty well for example.
  14. Albert Almora has 5 walks in his first 7 games . . . maybe he got the message?
  15. The lesson of this postseason is not the value of contact, its the value of baserunning. You can live without power if you run the bases well. The marginal value of a home run decreases with the ability to take an extra base or steal a base. A base gained through a productive out also marginalizes the value of a home run although it is highly likely the cost of the out is not worth the base.
  16. Prospect Staff Positions Available by Jason Parks As the 2013 offseason creeps towards us, our eyes start to turn to projects and productions yet unaccomplished, and the personnel necessary to not only execute those resplendent tasks but to elevate the bar previously set. Our goals and ambitions going forward will require an expansion in coverage, and as a result, we are looking to add talent evaluators to the prospect staff. At Baseball Prospectus, we don’t wear the label of journalists or baseball writers; rather, we consider ourselves talent evaluators first and everything else second. Our main ambition is not to be an aggregator of industry information as much as it is to put quality eyes on the prospects themselves, offering eyewitness accounts to help support or contradict those industry opinions. The backbone of evaluation is being familiar with the process and owning the necessary skills to make confident determinations based on your experience. We aren’t looking for Google scouts or cell phone warriors who rehash information available elsewhere. We are looking for people who thrive in the environments of minor-league parks, the type of people who can sit on a series and recognize the difference between a future major leaguer and a minor leaguer putting up good numbers. We are looking for legit talent evaluators. If you have serious interest in an opportunity with Baseball Prospectus, please email me: jparks@baseballprospectus.com. We are accepting resumes for intern-level positions. Ideal candidates will have proximity to prospect-rich environments and should already possess sound evaluation skills. Playing experience is preferred but not required, and the ability to communicate your observations clearly is a plus. In the event of a casting couch situation, please handle yourself accordingly.
  17. Soriano made that catch?
