  1. this is interesting using a mid to create width. it was super noticeable. The effect seemed to engage Dest upfield but Weah seemed to have less room to operate. Were they doing the same on the other side?
  2. turtling Iran does not describe how they played today. just saying. also, there is no universe where Jedi was one of the best players on the field.
  3. This is only because you are a fan of a team that finds a way. Illinois fans all know we will lose to Northwestern somehow.
  4. The two games I watched today, Netherlands/Ecuador and the US/England both show why group play sucks. Netherlands went ahead and basically just shut it down for the rest of the game knowing a draw with Qatar their last opponent, meant they were in good shape. England didn't look especially interested either especially considering they barely pressed a US team that has shown little ability to play out or threaten direct.
  5. I have no idea what that last part means lol :hello: Their manager Quieroz famously has had the same approach with multiple national teams, and it's bunker hard and don't really change anything even if game state changes. Obviously the England game shows that at a certain amount of adversity they have to try to play a little, but fundamentally they are not doing anything different up 1 or down 1 until after the 75th minute. throw in a crappy field and referee and it's a concacaf qualifier. Awesome to outplay England but you have to be able to beat Iran if you want to be relevant.
  6. A general comment not specific to Wright. The US looked great.
  7. Pep can run his system because he gets the players that fit it. Gregg is running his system despite his players - which doesn't work for internationals.
  8. Beat Iran and US goes through. Today is irrelevant at this point.
  9. What a weird comment - you realize it's also Ronaldo's last world cup, right? Messi’s been getting way more attention than Ronaldo for a number of reasons in this World Cup which is where the comment came from. Has anyone had more attention than Cristiano Ronaldo? Still makes no sense why it would be "fitting" if Portugal were to win.
  10. What a weird comment - you realize it's also Ronaldo's last world cup, right? I can't figure out why Portugal isn't better. It's a shame Simeone ruined Felix - he could be so good if he played the ball instead of the ref.
  11. I mean, he only made three saves. One was the penalty, one was a weak header that he "dove" for but really was pretty routine. Not sure what the third was - just saying maybe God status is a bit of an over-statement.
  12. He made one fantastic save in the second half that saved the game. Did you watch it? I don't remember Courtois doing anything special. The PK was an easy save and a couple others were also pretty weak efforts. I don't think xG/G necessarily equates to keeper play. Maybe I missed that one.

  14. Lucky they're in a weak group with fellow decrepit old men Croatia. KDB seemed to always be wondering why his teammates weren't where they were supposed to be (though it was shocking he didn't play to Tielemanns on that first half break) Canada probably just blew their chances of advancing. They lack quality up front and Davies did not seem right. They can play a similar style against Croatia but now will need a win.
  15. https://www.espn.com/soccer/blog-the-toe-poke/story/4809539/why-have-the-matches-at-the-2022-world-cup-been-so-long In theory, it makes sense but really, you introduce this at the World Cup? It's time for some frickin' transparency - just run a clock and stop it when it's supposed to be stopped. It's not that hard. It's ludicrous at the end of tight games when no one has a clue how much time is left! Then add to it this idea that a half can't end when a team is attacking . . . and what does that even mean?
  16. They were also two games away from breaking the record for longest unbeaten run by a mens national team. They still have a good chance to win the group really. I was going to watch this recorded but my cousin texted me the result at 6 AM . . . Poland and Mexico looked pretty hapless.
  17. The only time the ref is required to stop play for an injury is if there's a suspected head injury, and most refs will wait for teams to put the ball out of play or at least wait for the current phase of play to finish. This ref had more of a 'spite all teams and make everyone angry at me all the time, this is equality' approach. the reffing was poor. teams used to play the ball out anytime someone went down until they got sick of players faking injuries to stop play and now everyone just plays on - it's much better. No idea why this ref thought he needed to stop play.
  18. Doesn't it come down to goal difference? Am I missing something? I don't think a win against Iran is a given for either Wales or the US. I also am not sure England is ever going to not want to beat Wales.
  19. the good news is the US will be playing in prime time in the next one. But what the hell are you doing working this week?
  20. Yea, overall decent performance but that is the kind of play the US has to eliminate to progress. You can't fall asleep on a throw in and then dive in like that in the box. The US also needs some more depth and I can't say I have a ton of confidence in Berhalter as disorganized as they look (though I will concede internationals don't get a ton of time to train together).
  21. yea, good half for CP. Except the set pieces . . . but he is into the game.
  22. It's unfortunate neither Gio nor Aaronson play the 9 #oldnews
  23. I was impressed with Virginia though I have to say Illinois pretty much lost the game with poor shot selection and sloppiness (and free throws).
  24. If goal difference matters when they play Oranje in the last group game, we could be in for a treat 8-) Who's going to score? Janssen?
  25. Harry Kane could miss 2 penalties in regulation and another one in the shootout and the English fans would still find a way to blame Saka or Sterling for the team losing. Saka is so good.
