  1. Maybe you're just comparing it the Cubs ability to turn perfectly good lemons into rotten ones? That's not intended to be a slam, but when's the last time the Cubs saw improvement from players they've signed? And in all fairness, the Cards have definitely had their share of bad signings. People seem to remember the drastic turnarounds, but there are none to be seen this season. Derek Lee, Michael Barrett, Aramis Ramirez . . .
  2. ah, but on a single, there could be an error that lets you advance to second. plus what was just said about number of pitches. plus I would add that this is not reflected in season stats generally used for player evaluation.
  3. I disagree that the lineup order would improve this team much. Wow Thanks for the insight. OBP off all of those spots in the lineup with current players and splits included. Pierre (320), Barrett (399), Lee (396), Aramis (324), Jones/Murton (372), Walker (356), Jones/Murton (287), Cedeno (280). no need for the sarcasm just because your argument has been proven wrong by dozens of people who do nothing but analyze baseball.
  4. I disagree that the lineup order would improve this team much.
  5. in summary, in order of increasing importance, walks singles double triples home runs six pages for everyone to agree that a single is better than a walk? six pages for everyone to agree that a walk is better than an out? Anyone care to argue those two points? incidentally, if I had more time I was going to prove how much more valuable. Alas, I have a job. triples aren't 1.5 times what doubles are though so slugging percentage is decidely imperfect.
  6. Uh, that makes no sense wouldn't we send over Ramirez as well? I wouldn't say it makes no sense . . . but yea, the yanks might want an infielder back.
  7. I don't think Giles is a great answer but I don't think Jones has any chance to perform for three years as he has in the first half. I am being serious grassbass - you can measure it. You are correct that I am oversimplifying, but you can measure it. I think if you want to find a RF, you could start talking to Arizona about Greg Maddux for one of their young prospects.
  8. so catcher's defense is the problem with this team?
  9. Did a little mining this morning, I certainly wish the Cubs looked as old as the Yankees do right now! BCB If the season ended today, even with their recent hot streak, they would not be in the playoffs. Either way, they are getting old. They're only 0.5 games behind the Red Sox in the AL East (tied in the loss column) and only 2.5 games behind the White Sox in the Wild Card (2 back in the loss column). They're definately not done yet. no, but they are getting old. when was the last time anyone questioned if they would be in the playoffs in late july?
  10. Sure you can! How do runners hit with Pierre on first compared to him not on first. Pretty simple to measure.
  11. my sources are telling me the deal is: Eyre Dempster Prior and Jones for ARod $20 million cash.
  12. there are two players I wouldn't trade from this team - Z and D. anyone else can go.
  13. Wouldn't ARod be the best DH in the league anyway? he was pulled because he has been trade to the Cubs . . . Honestly, I could see Jim doing it out of desperation if the Yankees were that stupid (or also desperate).
  14. he at least has edmonds horribly misplaying that line drive . . .
  15. I don't think they've found a way to properly quantitate speed either. Just an example from earlier this season. Pierre was on 1st with 1 out and Lee is at the plate. The pitcher gets ahead of Lee 1-2 in the count. Concerned that a 1-2 count is a good count for Pierre to steal, the pitcher becomes distracted and starts throwing over to 1st repeatedly. The end result is that he ends up walking Lee. Now Pierre is at 2nd, Lee is at 1st with 1 out. Pierre immediate steals 3rd on a great jump, and a rushed catcher throws the ball over the 3rd baseman's head. Pierre easily trots in, and Lee advances from 1st to 3rd on the stolen base and the error. Lee scores on a lazy sac fly. In such a case, Pierre essentially "manufactured" two runs that inning. His and Lee's. He'll never be accredited with Lee's. this can be proven by evaluating at bats with Pierre on first. How can you know the pitcher walked Lee because he was worried about Pierre? Lee walks a lot. That is just speculation. These things can be measured, however. The difficulty is in producing a big enough sample size to have meaningful data.
  16. This statement is completely false and indicates you don't read much. In fact, most SABR articles I have read recently indicate that defense is far more important than previously thought. The best measures to date are to combine pitching and defense because they are largely inseparable - preventing runs. The argument here has never been that Jones is the problem - the idea is that he is playing above his head and his trade value is higher now than it ever will be again (most likely). Thus, his value to the Cubs is greater by trading him than by keeping him. If you can get good prospects, I would even eat most of the deal. His position is the antithesis of Prior who is worthless in trade but could pay large dividends by keeping him.
  17. there is peter gabriel genesis and then the crap afterward. neither of these bands is anything special.
  18. neil young should be considered separately though.
  19. having this matchup in the same round with the who versus genesis is a travesty - unless you are only considering peter gabriel genesis, which many people have never heard.
  20. Did a little mining this morning, I certainly wish the Cubs looked as old as the Yankees do right now! BCB If the season ended today, even with their recent hot streak, they would not be in the playoffs. Either way, they are getting old.
  21. please start your own thread about why you want to trade walker. this one is about jones. thank you.
  22. the money and players argument isn't applicable - you explore the possibility. if it costs too much, you don't do it. Ichiro will be a valuable player - better than any outfielder on the cubs - for five or six more years.
  23. face it DJ, during the Hendry regime, Freel will never be valued.
  24. Players who's game is based on speed have been shown to age well. I think the fact that he is 32 is largely irrelevant as he will be a good player for 5 or 6 more years. I could definitely see Ichiro as part of a very good team.
