  1. Right-handers have killed Correia this year, and Murton's also the best defensive outfielder the Cubs have on the bench at the moment. It's probably a good move. Considering the pitcher's splits, I'd be tempted to start Cedeno over Fontenot, but Fontenot is playing so much better than Cedeno right now and the fact that the pitcher has faced less than 200 batters total this year makes me want to avoid the split and start Fontenot anyway.
  2. I thought after 15 days a player either had to go on rehab assignment or be back with the big club. Otherwise transferred to the 60 day. Would they send Reed to Iowa for the weekend? Would he accept that? You can leave a player on the 15 day DL as long as you want. For example, Chad Fox is still on the 15 day DL from his injury quite a while ago. In this case though, it won't matter. The Cubs aren't going to ask Reed to stay on the DL any longer. He already has been forced to be on the DL 6-7 days longer than the injury actually needed, and they'll activate him as soon as he's eligible.
  3. Yes, actually. The Cubs will not see Volquez in the Cincy series because he pitches Sunday. They might not see Harrang either, but for him it depends on how the Reds arrange the rotation after their off day. My guess is that the Giants will skip somebody to give Lincecum an extra start before the All-Star Break. If they do, the Cubs will see both Cain and Lincecum again next weekend.
  4. I think Theriot's running has been severely curtailed at this point anyway. He hasn't had an attempt since June 13th. He hasn't been caught stealing since May 24th. And Theriot's stolen bases will be virtually non-existent in the 8 spot. Lou won't run him much with the pitcher up, and it doesn't really make sense to run much with Soriano up there either (Soriano swings and misses a lot, he doesn't hit many ground balls, and he hits a high percentage of extra base hits. That's like the perfect trio on why he's the worst hitter on the team to attempt a stolen base in front of). Not that it's a bad thing that he isn't running as much. 4 stolen bases a month with 0 CS (as he did in June) seems about right for the frequency that he should be running.
  5. It looks like Marquis will start one of the two games. As for the other one, it's unclear. It won't be Lilly or Marshall. It very likely won't be Gallagher. If I had to guess on the 2nd one, it would be Dempster, with them giving Zambrano an extra day off and pitching him on Thursday, and pushing Gallagher all the way back to Friday. In fact, if Dempster pitches well tonight, I think they'll go ahead and start him on Tuesday to give him 1 extra start before the All-Star Break, and then pitch Marquis on Wednesday. It's really all up in the air at the moment though, and probably won't be decided until Monday afternoon.
  6. It looks like it's getting closer to official now. From Cubs.com: That ends up making the lineup against right-handers: Soriano Fukudome Lee Ramirez Edmonds Soto DeRosa Theriot Pitcher I like it a lot.
  7. The problem becomes then that when a left-hander starts, you have Ward, Fontenot, Pie, Edmonds, and Blanco on the bench. None of those 4 left-handers are even close to respectable against left-handers, so if you need a pinch-hitter you don't really have any options (especially early in the ballgame, when you don't want risk using Blanco).
  8. Surprisingly enough, that's not quite true. The Reds cannot hit right-handed pitching so far this year. They have a .706 OPS against right-handers and a .766 against left-handers. I'm still worried about Marquis against the Reds because I can't shake the thought that they are so heavy with left-handed power, but the stats haven't supported that so far this year.
  9. Gallagher's not leaving Chicago at this point. I think Lou's comments and genuine surprise about how good he was during last Saturday's FOX broadcast kind of proved that. Lou was pretty glowing about Gallagher, even though Gallagher had already given up 5 runs that day. Someone in another thread brought up a good point. This might be Marshall's last start, but they might send him to the Chicago bullpen after that. They might go with 13 pitchers until he can get down there and available to go, or they might go ahead and send out a reliever now.
  10. St. Louis is actually virtually identical against left-handers than they are against right-handers, so the reasoning is very suspect. I don't really mind giving Marshall one more start though, so I'm not opposed to this move. It's just not reasoned out very well. The question then becomes-if you're going to send Marshall down right after the game, who are you going to call up? At that point, you've already sent both Murton and Patterson down on Thursday and Friday (unless they shock us and go without a bullpen arm for the weekend, which I doubt). That might be Hoffpauir's chance to sneak in there for a few days, as there won't really be anyone else that fits any better with the current team.
  11. I guess I'm one of the only ones who didn't feel like we played particularly badly tonight. Cain's a very frustrating pitcher to have on your team because he's on and off. At times he's unhittable, at other times he's missing his spots and leaving pitches over the middle of the plate. Tonight, especially in the last 3-4 innings, he was hitting his spots almost every pitch. The Cubs just didn't have much of a chance against him, and they weren't able to cash in on the 1-2 tiny chances they got in the first 8 innings. They tried to fight back once he left the game, but didn't have quite enough. The Cubs got beat by a guy with great stuff who was completely on tonight. The Cubs were throwing their #4/#5 starter. With the way that Cain was pitching, it would have been one of the best absolute stolen games of the year if the Cubs could have found a way to win. They didn't, but I didn't think it was particularly bad that they couldn't tonight.
  12. Pretty much. Kosuke has been good there. As you can see, the rest have been pretty bad in that particular spot: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/batting?team=chc&cat=OPS&season=2008&split=109&seasonType=2&type=reg
  13. It's the same distance to straightaway center in this park as it is in most. He just didn't get quite enough.
  14. Ward grounded into a double play to end the inning with runners on 1st and 2nd in the first, but even that had 1 of our 2 runners get on due to an error. There haven't been any innings where the offense has looked good.
  15. Marquis has finally started to hit his spots consistently the last 10 pitches or so. When it got to 3-2 on Lewis, his release was much more controlled from that point through the end of the inning. That contrasts with the 2nd, when he was effective but missing spots.
  16. They need to be ready to get a pitcher up quickly tonight. So far, this isn't even a normal Marquis start. Usually his release point is at least decently consistent. Tonight, it's all over the place. He can't think about where to put the ball when he has no idea of when in his motion to let the ball go right now. Let's see if he's corrected that in the 2nd.
  17. 1st and 3rd, man on 1st took off for 2nd, Soto threw a 1 hopper down there and the runner from 3rd took off on the throw and scored without a return throw to the plate.
  18. Yes. Easily the worst strike call I've seen all year. I just watched it again, and it was nowhere close.
  19. Hopefully Marquis can find it here. He doesn't look comfortable at all right now with his release.
  20. He said that he wanted to join the Cubs even in the winter, but that he was pretty sure the Cardinals wouldn't trade him to the Cubs. I think he really liked the atmosphere and that's why he wanted to come here. He also came to the Cubs to get more chances at burying the Cardinals.
  21. Ceda continues his dominance out of the Tennessee bullpen with a perfect 1 1/3 innings getting the save with 2 strikeouts. So far for Tennessee: 10 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 17 K. I think his time as a starter is officially over.
  22. Haven't checked the others, but Yahoo's was just changed back to Marquis as the starter.
  23. That has to be a screwup. They are alphabetically close. But it's screwed up everywhere I have checked. cubs.com has it right Yeah, but MLB.com, Yahoo, and ESPN all have Marmol starting. I think the lineups are posted to all of them at the exact same time from one central data source. So if there was an error in the data, it would show up on all of them until somebody manually changed it on one of them.
  24. Both the Cubs and Cardinals would have to go on a hot streak for that to happen. Milwaukee would probably still make an acquisition (if they're planning to right now) if they were 6 or less out of the WC considering the small number of teams involved in that race right now. I don't see them falling 4 more games behind the Cardinals then they are now in another month.
  25. Pie with a triumphant return to Iowa. He has a walk, a home run, and an RBI single through 4 innings. Iowa's up 5-0 in the bottom of the 4th. Bases loaded, nobody out for Hoffpauir right now, so they could be adding to that. Hart had a line of: 3 2/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K Was he on a strict pitch count? Seems rather strange to remove him after the first two guys get out in the inning.
