  1. I know. It's not like they've lost their Ace, starting catcher and the best hitter in baseball all in the span of a week. Super Lucky! Yet they're still winning. That's the point. Today was another game that they had absolutely no business winning and had it handed to them. "Here, have a win" If the Phillies had won would you have said the same thing? No? Why would I? Look at how many baserunners each team had. I guess you could also look at errors and extra base hits. Phillies- 21 baserunners Cardinals- 10 baserunners It's okay to admit that the Cardinals stole a game. It's ok to admit that the amount of baserunners isn't the only thing that matters. The Phillies played sloppy and the Cards hit homeruns. Utley's not likely to hand another game to a team for the rest of his career on two poor throws in one extra inning (yes, the 2nd one was an error charged to Gordon but was still a poor throw behind him). The Cards got lucky, plain and simple. And the Cardinals are not likely to walk four straight batters with 2 outs again this year. It was a 6-4 Cardinal lead until that point. I would say that the Phillies got pretty lucky as well.
  2. I'm about at my wits end with these whiny babies. At one point Bradley broke down crying saying that he just wants to give his kid a better life than he had. He is a friggen baseball player making millions of dollars, I really don't want to hear how "hard" your life is. There are many families in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin who have just had their house float away because of floods. They have it hard, Bradley doesn't.
  3. Congrats on being d-bag of the month.
  4. If that's what you want to believe then go ahead. But teams don't put in a lot of money into the draft for nothing. And the draft is still a crapshoot. There been great picks early (Arod/Chipper, etc, etc) and great picks late (Piazza). There been plenty of "highly thought of players" draft high, who busted. So just because they were "once highly thought of" doesn't mean anything. With that said, guys like Luis Gonzalez (4th rd/88 draft), Steve Finley (11th rd/86 draft), Edgar Martinez, all developed late in their careers. So as much moaning and groaning we can have over players like Ryan Ludwick having, in essence, a career yr, it could also means he might finally be putting it together. Personally, I'm hoping it's a career yr, and he struggles---like his teammates---without Pujols. Ofcourse it's a crapshoot. But that doesn't change my point that these players were highly thought of, and not just coming out of nowhere.

  6. Schumaker had a OPS+ of 111 with 177 at bats last year. This year his OPS+ is 110 with 210 at bats. He was a 5th round pick, so he was somewhat highly thought of coming out of college. Nothing really out of the ordinary with his numbers. Wellemeyer was a 4th round selection by the Cubs in 2000, so he was thought highly of as well. He never had a MLB start until last year, so maybe he's one of those guys that just prefers starting as well. He won't keep up his pace either, but could be a good 3rd or 4th rotation pitcher. Ludwick and Wellemeyer will probably fall off somewhat, and Schumaker will probably stay at his current pace.
  7. I don't care if he 'kept getting injured', he'd never OPS'd even .900 in a season at any level and now he's OPSing nearly 1.100 when he will turn 30 in a month. It's a load of crap any way you slice it. Becareful with that argument. D Lee went multiple seasons without an OPS over .900 and about the same age posted an OPS of 1.1. Were you calling that a load of crap? Obviously Ludwick isn't as good as Lee, and he won't end up with an OPS of 1.1. But he could still end up at .9-1.0 Derrek Lee made a tangible improvement to his game - learning to hit (especially to pull) the inside pitch. He also had consistent OPS's above .850 at the big league level. Ludwick had been below .850 every full season (more than 200 ABs) he had played since two good years in 2002 and 2003 (which, admittedly, I messed up, he OPS'd in the low 900's in both those years but were still in the minors and not the majors). And now that Ludwick is healthy he is making tangible improvements to his game. I've already admitted that he won't keep up the pace, but it's not like he a .700-.800 OPS guy either. He is somewhere in between, which is still pretty good.

  9. To be fair, Ludwick was considered to be a pretty good prospect at one time but kept getting injured. It's not like he was some scrub that is now on pace to hit 40 homeruns.
  10. I think the scariest team would be the team with the 2nd best record in the NL. Should the Rays be more afraid of the Blue Jays than the Yankees? The Sox more afraid of the Twins than the Indians and Tigers? The Phillies more afraid of the Marlins than the Mets? The only thing that I'm afraid of with regards to the Cardinals is that they're not completely out of it by the deadline and wind up getting a Matt Holliday into their lineup for his prime years. The Cardinals team as currently constructed is nothing to fear unless you're crossing at a stoplight. I don't think anybody is really afraid of the Yankees right now. The Rays should be more afraid of the Red Sox, forget about the Blue Jays. But the difference is that teams like the Yankees, Detroit and the Mets should be playing better, but are underperforming. So yes, you do still worry about teams like that. The Reds however are probably performing like they should, which is still under .500 and 8 games out.
  11. He loves Dodger pitching. He's the guy that hit two grand slams against the Dodgers in the same inning against the same pitcher (Chan Ho Park)
  12. I think the scariest team would be the team with the 2nd best record in the NL.
  13. Ludwick was highly regarded as a prospect 5-6 years ago. His only problem was that he was always hurt. But last year and this year he's been healthy, and it shows. But I'm even surprised at what Schumaker is doing.
  14. It's all in good fun.
  15. Because our coach got one. And Spiezio. josh hancock would've gotten one Wow. Not surprising though. Go ahead and make fun of Darryl Kile too, because people dying is hilarious. While you're at it, crack on Corey Lidle, he's also dead. I didn't make fun of anyone. You seemed to be saying that the manager was the only person who drove drunk. There's also a position player, and a pitcher - who ended up killing himself. Also, Darryl Kile died of a heart problem, Hancock died because he was an idiot. I'm sure no Cub has ever driven drunk, so I understand why your comments are so spot on. They are right, we have them beat when it comes to drunk players. Just like they have us beat when it comes to drunk fans attacking opposing players.
  16. But, didn't he basically tell baseball to take a hike when they asked to talk to him about it? Or am I remembering wrong? IIRC, a week or two after it came out, the Cardinals had a series against the Mets in New York. At that time he met with MLB officials and gave them the same story that he gave during his press conference. Whether that is telling them to take a hike or not is up to your interpretation.
  17. It started off well for Mulder in St. Louis. He should have probably won 20 games that first year, since a couple were blown by the bullpen. After his 10 inning complete game against Clemens and the Astros, I thought he was going to be great. But it's all been downhill since then.
  18. I just learned how to work the google machine and dug a little deeper. He wasn't suspended because it wasn't outlawed at the time he received the shipments. And since he also had a prescription for it from a licensed doctor, he was in no legal trouble as well. Although I'm sure the doctor was shady. So it turns out that he technically didn't cheat, but consciously he probably knew he was cheating.
  19. Really? Plenty of minor leaguers were suspended, but maybe that was for steroids. I don't know. This whole process is a mystery to me. I believe he received the shipments in 2004, a year before HGH was outlawed by MLB. I thought at one point the minors had a different set of rules, but I could be wrong.
  20. The bottom line is that it is a setback. Fortunately, I never counted on him to do anything this year.
  21. Ankiel wasn't suspended because it happened while he was in the minor leagues.
  22. A perfect example of the difference between Dusty and Tony. Lee goes down and Baker let's the team go into the [expletive]. Now I didn't expect them to be as good without Lee as they are with him, but the Cubs still have some good players. Pujols goes down and the team is actually scoring more runs per game without him and have an 8-5 record.
  23. In a little over a week they went from being up .5 games to being down 5.5 games. Wow!
  24. Mike Shannon hasn't drank for years in the booth.
  25. A photo of Ozzie kissing his son in a traditional Venezuelan manner answers what now? It was a joke. One that was told numerous times last October. I'm not sure the implication of his sexual orientation would have anything to do with intelligence anyways. But that's a can of worms we don't want to open again, right? Killjoy.
