  1. I don't believe in "too right handed". I think too many managers get caught up in L/R lineups, instead of the best hitters. Besides, the Cubs are actually middle of the pack in the NL for OPS against righties, and at the bottom against lefties. Isn't Wrigley better for RH hitters anyways? Or is that what you were saying? I was actually saying the Cubs are worse against lefties than righties, so it wouldn't hurt to replace Jones with Burrell. The righties in Wrigley issue is another topic. I'm not sure if it's true or not. The Cubs really haven't employed any great LH hitters in recent years, so it's hard to say if it's the chicken or the egg. Adam Dunn has been better in Wrigley than all but 2 other stadiums. Although that's just one example of course. Depending on your definition of "great," the list of left-handed hitters that have had great years as a Cub throughout the history of the franchise isn't very long compared to other teams.
  2. Listening to that show is pure torture.
  3. Jim Hendry has decided he likes fast slap-hitting midgets that catch the ball. Do they all get along, though? Yes. They will all ride to field in the same car. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/tovalondner/midgets.jpg Is that Silent Bob driving that car? I do believe it's from the Clerks cartoon. That would explain it.

  5. You've mentioned Lackey before, and I'm still curious why you think the Angels would deal a very effective starting pitcher on the right side of 30 with a reasonable pricetag. As for Weaver and Marquis, I'd rather give that spot to one of the young guys than waste money on either of those two. Let Mateo and Marshall battle it out for that spot.
  6. Driving cars is far more deadly, and for many, small planes are as much a necessity as a car. If you are joking about a death like that immediately after hearing it, you are a pathetic jdiot. Did I say I was joking about it! Did I post that! You're the idiot who blindy can't see any other way but your own. Expand your mind a bit will ya! Everyone is different and everyone deals with death in their own way. Expand your mind?!?! Playing "Learning to Fly" on a radio station in a major market in response to someone dying in a plane crash less than 24 hours after the crash took place is in extremely poor taste and frankly, I don't think it's too much to call someone an idiot for doing that.
  7. DePaul looking pretty good in the Big East. A young team who should get better this year. DePaul also got 2 top 40 recruits for next year and are in the running for the #3 prospect (on rivals) Rose. I am a Michigan and DePaul fan. It's really hard to be a Michigan fan after they started out 16-4 and ended up not making the tourney. I am not looking forward to another Michigan disapointment. As long as Amaker is coaching there, get used to disappointment. The folks at Seton Hall were overjoyed when he left.
  8. They're saying it was a "general aviation" aircraft.
  9. Purdue has their two best players back this year. Both missed pretty much all of last season and combined are good for about 35 points a game plus good defense. They should be one of the most improved teams over last year.
  10. I didn't see a windfall from the bud-lite bleachers or the expansion of the bleachers in general. If you're expecting to see how every cent is spent, then your expectations aren't very realistic. Maybe they'll use the money to pay the light bills for the added night games in the future. Who cares? It's not an intrusive ad.
  11. How about just putting th sponsopship in the team name? The Nippon Ham Cubs, anyone? Considering the stink that was raised when the Angels changed their name to the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim," I think there would be enough potential backlash to prevent most teams from trying to use a corporate sponsor in the team name.
  12. You don't see a problem with it, but you then you go on to say that those dumbass chairs painted in the dugout to sell furniture. So that bothers you and the 7:11 thing doesn't. I think we have to agree the Cubs gotta be the least team that takes advantage of advertisements. Subtle ad placement here and there isn't bad. It's a source of revenue. I don't mind the little sponsorships like this one or the "Cingular call to the bullpen" or the "State Farm Insurance run". I even kind of liked it when a couple stadiums had the very simple "Gap" ads in left-center and right-center. I always found that to be quite clever. I'm not a fan of the rotating billboard behind homeplate, although that's better than having all the walls littered with several different ads. If they start seriously talking about putting ads on players uniforms, then I'll be angry. If I wanted to see that, I'd start watching Nascar.
  13. Money which could be used to make the team better or make the game experience better for the fan. When it comes to rosters, fans complain that there isn't enough money being spent on players. When it comes to advertising/sponsorship, fans complain that baseball is too much of a business. Major League teams are not non-profit organizations. If they can do something like this to make a little money and not negatively impact the fans, so be it.
  14. As a fellow Purdue grad, I hope Gassner can catch on somewhere. He has a very good change-up and one of the best pickoff moves I've ever seen. He's not going to overpower anyone but could probably make for a decent middle reliever for some team.
  15. Something tells me that the Cubs wouldn't need Izturis in that scenario.
  16. Umm, Steve Phillips? Didn't Bobby Valentine do the same thing? And Larry Bowa? Those who can, do. Those who can't, coach. Those who can't coach, commentate for ESPN. Fixed.
  17. That's based on the average situation though. The run expectancies with a below average hitter at the plate would be different. This is coming from somebody who thinks that sacrificing with your 2 hitter is crazy though. If you feel the need to sacrifice with your number 2 hitter, then the team is basically saying that the number 2 hitter is a significantly below average hitter-which begs the question of why are they batting them number 2 then? I agree with what you are saying. Sacrificing with the pitcher is fine. Sacrificing with the number 2 hitter, not so much. Remember when Baylor would have Gutierrez sacrifice Eric Young from second to third with nobody out in the first inning? Good times. :x
  18. I think the Yankees and Indians might have something to say about that.
  19. Dibs on the URL firedustybaker.blogspot.com...although I guess he doesn't need to be in broadcasting for that site to exist, since we all want him canned from his current position.
  20. Are they better with him in the lineup instead of Ray Durham? Or Soriano? Probably not, but as many other people have said countless times in the 8,147 discussions on this topic, Theriot starting at second base would be much more tolerable if the Cubs upgrade the offense at other positions, such as SS, CF and one of the corner OF spots.
  21. It's the HR's that are skewing his SLG. He's hit one every 42 at bats, compared to once every 410 in the minors. take a look at torii hunter's minor leauge stats. how does a guy with 42 career minor leauge hr's in 6 years and a career sluggin % under .400 hit 25-30 each year in the majors? according to your logic it shouldnt be happening but it is. Torii Hunter hit 60 homers in seven minor league seasons. Regardless, there are flaws with your argument. First, you didn't look at the number of at-bats, instead just focusing on the number of seasons. Second, he did hit a decent number of doubles, which for some players can translate into home run power as they mature. Third, he reached the majors at age 22. Theriot is much older than that. Hunter's first season in the minors, he hit no homers in 100 at-bats at the age of 18. Probably didn't have much experience with wood bats prior to that. The next year, he hit 10 homers in 335 at-bats, slugging .439. Power can develop as a hitter matures. It's much easier for someone that age to develop more power than it is for a 27-year old with absolutely no history of power at all. Fourth, Hunter's career OPS in the minors was roughly .750, which isn't too far off his major league OPS of .786.
  22. I'm not so sure about that. I don't think Juan really wants to stay. Espically since Baker is gone. That may prompt Hendry to overbid though and that worries me. C'mon! When was the last time the Cubs out-bidded anyone! Neifi, Rusch, Jones, Howry, Eyre, Dempster...the list is long and lamentable. Doesn't at least one other team have to show some sort of interest in a player before it can be said that the Cubs out-bid someone?
  23. Just to be clear, are you claiming that Kerry Wood tanked on purpose in his walk year during what should be the peak of his career so Dusty would get fired? That has to be one of the worst conspiracy theories I've ever heard. That's doesn't make to much sense until you think that Hendry will work with Wood on a deal. Was Wood as hurt as we are led to think? Maybe. Did Dusty want Wood in the Pen? No! So Hendry and Wood talked and noted that it's the better plan to shut him down until next year and put him in the pen as the closer. For Prior it was easier but he got more media crap for it. I'm sorry, but I just don't buy it. With a healthy season this year, Wood would have been in a great position to cash in. I don't think the Cubs faked his shoulder surgery in the offseason. If they shut him down, it was because he was legitimately hurt, not part of some big scheme to run Baker out of town. If they wanted to fire Baker, they don't need for their pitchers to fake injuries. They can just point to the 2004 collapse at the end of the season or 2005 in general and hand him his walking papers.
  24. I want Matt Murton to bat 2nd. I never want him to bunt. Ever. Never ever. it is a bit short sighted to say that any player should never bunt. bunting can be a big part of the game if used properly. i've seen puljos bunt and if he can do it so can murton (in the right situation). I hope you mean bunting for a hit, unless of course you saw Pujols' one and only career sacrifice bunt during his rookie year.
  25. that's their choice and their risk - don't you read the back of your ticket? Of course, but it's also common sense that there should be something protecting the people sitting directly behind home plate. Even if you're paying attention a 90+ mph fastball that is fouled straight back can be hard to dodge when you're sitting down.
