Fantasy Rankings (Pitchers Included)
Mephistopheles replied to Mephistopheles's topic in Fantasy Sports
Well the sample size of teams is growing. Basically I calculate an average team based off of actual results for a 5x5 12 team league's drafts. Using who is selected or not I calculate two things for each position, a replacement level player (usually found in rounds 18+ and on the waiver wire) and an average player (an average starter!, so I use top 14 at each position to include UTIL slots). Using the draft results I sum up the predicted statistics for each team. I then find the average team and the standard deviation of the teams in each statistic. From this we can take any team and find out what percentile they are in for each team. This can be converted to rotopoints. For example, a team that is predicted to score 825 teams by PECOTA is 1 stdev above the mean, so we expect them to be in the 84th percentile among all teams. So their expected roto score in runs would be 1+11*.68= 10.24. With this framework we can analyze the players. First let's look at say, Hanley Ramirez in runs. An average SS scores 90.2 runs. An average team scores 790 runs. Hanley Ramirez is predicted to score 108.0 runs. So an average team who replaces their average SS with Hanley Ramirez would score 790 - 90.2 + 108.0 = 808 runs. Now we want to convert this change in runs to change in expected rotoscore. So we find out that 808 runs would be in the 69th percentile. So that team would be projected to have a score of 1+.69*11 = 8.7 points in runs. The average team would have 1+.5*11 = 6.5 points, so the increase for Hanley in runs would be 2.2 points. We do this for every player in each category. Now, this is only over average, but we also need to include over replacement level, to get a relative distribution. To do that do the same thing above, but instead of subtracting an average teams score, find out the score of an average team that loses their average SS and replaces them with a replacement level SS. Then to combine the six rankings (2 in ZiPS, 2 in PECOTA, 2 in James) I simply found their rank in each of them and averaged them. -

Jeff Samardzija will have four option years. He won't have to make the team until 2011. Then again we have four years until Marquis 2.0!

Pitchers and Catchers Report - Official ST Pic/News Thread
Mephistopheles replied to Roast's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
That's the best news so far this season. Guzman could end up coming in very handy if he can make it back for the tail end of the season. Maybe he'll even get his first MLB win. That brings me to a great thought. Anyone with access to a vast majority of stats, can anyone figure out what is the record for most appearances without a win in MLB history? Guzman has 27 career appearances 80 Juan Alvarez 80 Ed Olwine 63 Chris Britton 61 Erik Plantenberg 55 Frank Fanovich 55 Terry Felton 51 Rob Mallicoat 50 Jeff Kaiser -
Let's see. Let's call last year his first full season as a baseball player. Well sorta kinda maybe...he did not have an offseason of baseball related workouts. Let's face facts, Samardzija is already 23 years old and has struck out all of 82 guys in 171 innings as a professional. You don't need any fancy mathematics to tell you that's not very good. Still, given his raw pedigree, it's not surprising he didn't light up the hitters. Minor league hitters can hit a fastball...each and every one of them. This year however, if Samardzija is truly going to be a real prospect we have to see tremendous strides across the board. He has to strike out 7 K/9 at a minimum and keep his GB rate over fifty percent. If he does not reach those goals, then he shouldn't be viewed as a solid prospect. If he shows some improvement, say K/9 around 5 flat, he's still nothing but your common prospect.

For comparison of Albert Pujols to Frank Thomas. In his first 7 seasons Albert Pujols has topped the .360 EqA mark once (.362 in 03). In Frank Thomas' first 8 seasons he dropped below the .360 EqA mark once (.355 in 93). In other words, the best Albert Pujols has been was the worst Frank Thomas was. Wrap your head around that one. -
Bonds tested positive for steriods one month after breaking

Top five hitters this century, IMO. Manny and ARod are nearly identical, ARod gets the nod thanks to health. David Ortiz basically on the strength of his last few years. 1. Barry Bonds 2. Albert Pujols 3. Alex Rodriguez 4. Manny Ramirez 5. David Ortiz Manny's never really been number one. In the 1990s he was always second fiddle to Frank Thomas. -
why would you want to do a cubic spine interpolation. Once you start interpolating data (in ANY fashion) you're going to wind up losing control of certain behavioral aspects of the function. Ie... in this case you'll lose a positive slope. If you increase your offensive out put you'll increase your runs output, it's only logical. interpolating it may not result in that. interpolating data isn't effective in something like this There are more digits, I just don't have them memorized off the top of my head. Besides, does a difference is .05 of a run make much of a difference? If you hit 50 HRs we're underestimating your run production by 2.5 runs. Who cares? There's no reason to go any further than two decimal places on a team basis much less an individual basis. As noble as it may sound, that's not really true. The only difference in approach is a sacrifice bunt. This is done, WPA (win probability added). The problem is that the year to year correlation of these variables is virtually non-existent...so we should use runs (which can then also be converted into wins if we feel like it). All production should be measured in runs.

at least they're not saying that it has happened like some people.

I did define the constant: C =(LgR/LgOut)/.260^2.5

First: You can tinker with them, and other things have been developed, linear weights. Then again, EqR can be broken down into linear weights if you want to. Linear weights basically represent that each event has a specific run value. Off the top of my head it's something like this: R = .5*1B + .8*2B + 3B + 1.4*HR +.33*BB -.25 OUT. Multiplying these three by 4 results in: 4RC = 1.3 BB + 2 1B + 3.2 2B + 4 3B + 5.6 HR - Out....which is very very close to Raw without the outs. Second: Basically something like OBP + SLG. If you ignore the denominator and add just the top half of the fractions of OPS you get BB + HBP + 2*1B + 3*2B + 4*3B + 5*HR. OPS is actually fit better by 1.6*OBP+SLG, but they just put all of the 1.6ish term into BB and HBP. They then added more bases to the top. So it's not all that different than the weights for OPS. Clay Davenport came up with them by himself, I believe.

we can all go back to actually visiting Cubs.com. And what does that mean? It means we get to read Carrie Muskat! Who else is stokked about that? I am.
-
well coming up with acceptable park factors is another subject entirely. keep in mind that all of the analysis of statistics to runs dont include park factors (theyre using raw stats mapping to runs)
-
you can probably count the number of people who do on one hand.

dear vance read this and fix my grammatical errors signed meph
