I'm not sure what the incentive is for a 16 game schedule. This is a pretty nice weekend to have games played in the south. Northwestern is playing at Vanderbilt and temps might not even break out of the 70s this Saturday in Nashville.

He's also reporting basketball setup: I'd be surprised if they made the determination already to have these divisions be used for basketball. Really surprised, actually.

Indy Star reporting that the 2011 and 2012 schedules will be announced tonight, as well. And Delany confirmed the announcement will be made at 6 PM.

Yes, rivalries are a top priority for determining the division. Cross divisional rivalries are not a top priority. Rivalries whether within the same division or across division are the same thing. The only thing that matters (mattered) in regards to rivalries to the Big Ten ADs is that they'd get to play the teams they wanted to play every year. I don't understand what your complaint is. No matter what you do somebody will feel some rivalry is getting the shaft, but you are complaining about cross division rivals when all that means is the rival already exists within the division. Of course there are some that won't be maintained. What I'm saying is that the placement of Illinois and Minnesota reduces the number of rivalries kept intact compared to a division setup where those teams were reversed, whether intra-division games or protected cross-division rivalries.

Yes, rivalries are a top priority for determining the division. Cross divisional rivalries are not a top priority. Rivalries whether within the same division or across division are the same thing. This only applies to football. They haven't had any time to think about basketball yet, but Delany said previously he didn't think there would be a need for divisions in basketball. I doubt there will be many sports other than football to adopt divisions.

The cross division rivalries should not be a high priority. And no matter how you break it down there's going to be "odd ones", like interleague baseball games nobody cares about. The setup discussed earlier (flipping Minnesota and Illinois in this setup) makes perfect sense for cross-division rivalries. Cross division rivals should not be the first priority. Getting the divisions right should be the top priority. I would claim it's unfair just because it puts Illinois and Indiana together, automatically giving everybody in their division 2 wins. Rivalries are one of the top priorities. Delany already said about 90% would be preserved. Competitively there's not much difference between Minnesota and Illinois, anyways. It doesn't make any sense to me as to why they'd be aligned like that when you get a better setup just flipping Minnesota and Illinois.

There's a radio report in Detroit saying that the cross-divisional game will be the last weekend of the season. And the divisions would be: 1 - Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern 2 - Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana, Illinois Honestly, I really don't get that setup. The cross-division rivalries don't make nearly as much sense.

I don't expect them to screw it up aside from moving the Ohio State and Michigan rivalry. Most of the fans that will be upset will be at Michigan and Ohio State, but only minor annoyances elsewhere. Schools with fans that will be upset: -Michigan -Ohio State Schools with fans that will be upset because they're losing a rivalry but really should have thought there was a high probability that they'd lose one -Iowa -Wisconsin Schools with fans that will be upset because they're in the same division as Ohio State but should have expected it anyways -Indiana -Purdue Schools with fans that will be upset because they're in the same division as Ohio State and thought they'd be able to avoid it -Minnesota Schools with fans that shouldn't be upset: -Northwestern -Illinois -Nebraska -Michigan State -Penn State

BTW, he'll the one on the bike. I must have skimmed the article when that happened because I envisioned him getting hit in a low speed collision on campus while on his bicycle. His shoe went at least 50 feet straight up.

No Big Ten announcement until the afternoon at the earliest according to Teddy Greenstein. I think they'd be better off doing it live in prime time, though I'd obviously love it to distract me at work.

So the NCAA has denied Jeremiah Masoli's eligibility. Didn't see that coming. Ole Miss is appealing.

I don't know why Ohio State fans would react that way. Michigan fans, on the other hand, should be really pissed considering the state of their program right now. The rivalry at the end of the season is more valuable to keeping Michigan's fanbase as strong as it is long-term than Ohio State's.

Yeah, there seems to be a lot of small chatter about the possibility, but individually they seem like nothing. I had been wondering what the live football special is supposed to be for, though. Let's hope.

It was. The game was originally scheduled for ESPN/2 at 11 AM. But then Northwestern moved it to 2:30. Still have no idea why they did that, partially since it will go head to head with the Ohio State/Iowa game. Well that just makes no sense. After a month or two, Dr. Phillips finally gave his reasoning for the move today. He said that they wanted to give fans more time to get down to Wrigley since it's a new venue for them and also wanted to create more of a bowl type (Wrigley-type) atmosphere to soak in before the game. Very valid reasoning, but it still hurts to move the game from ESPN/2 to ESPNU. He also said that Northwestern and Illinois will play each other every year, but didn't specify whether they'd be in the same division or that would be a cross-divisional game. And nobody cares, anyways.

On the other hand, Pam Ward She's doing games on ESPNU this year. The Wrigley game may be the Big Ten's only ESPNU game in 2010. Not that I mind her. She's called some big wins for Northwestern. Iowa will be one of 3 schools sending their bands to Evanston this year, which is unheard of. Iowa's passing up trips to Minnesota (first time in new stadium), Michigan, and Indiana. The athletic department must be taking the game more seriously. Also, the WAC is giving Fresno State and Nevada until 10/25 to pay their $5 million exit fee or else they'll sue.
