  1. It's also worth noting that of his six starts at AAA, Samardzija faced the Albuquerque Isotopes, the AAA affiliate of the Florida Marlins, three times. His last two starts were against the 'Topes, in addition to one of his two 9 strikeout performances. The Marlins should have had a very good scouting report on him, although it doesn't help quite as much when he's pitching out of the bullpen.
  2. http://bp0.blogger.com/_mdh8Yg649Vg/SIpi_OEQ0lI/AAAAAAAABbI/dkD4AWoZgHU/s400/sama02.PNG http://bp3.blogger.com/_mdh8Yg649Vg/SIpjT4ogyaI/AAAAAAAABbw/q90ULETEbF8/s400/sama07.PNG He's not throwing 98 when he starts. And he barely threw his splitter yesterday, especially in his first inning, which provided a glimpse as to why he has had a hard time striking guys out before a month ago, and that includes his college career, even with some movement on his fastball. It has been rather easy to sit on his fastball. That's also the reason why many wanted to see him stay at Iowa and let him get more work in on that out pitch, especially when he's only had success with it over the last month or so. His career is still in a state of infancy regardless of the age, contract, and aggressive promotions. He needs time to develop and can't be viewed like most college pitchers two years removed from the draft.
  3. It was pretty cool to see Marshall protecting the bullpen today. It could be the closest he'll ever get to the mound. It must have been a thrill for him.
  4. It's nice to see TFC cave. Hopefully an official announcement will come soon. I've got tickets to the qualifier, but I'm not sure I'll be able to go.
  5. Ooh, another new toy to play with. Thanks, woodchip.
  6. He was the exact opposite last time out, too. He walked the last two batters that he faced in the 5th inning for his 2nd and 3rd walks of the day.
  7. Can't say Daytonians are the wisest bunch. Castillo just threw a 95 mph baseball point blank at someone and you cuss and flick him off as he walks 5 feet away with a baseball bat in his hand? I particularly enjoyed the "let's play ball!" chant. I wonder if they kept it up for the next 65 minutes.
  8. Samardzija should probably be viewed more like a high school draftee instead of a college draftee. He needs to learn how to pitch.
  9. I just assumed they were making an obscure reference to Wuertz dressing up as a leprechaun one time for Halloween. I don't like it.
  10. It's worth pointing out that his release point, while on average higher, remains pretty inconsistent. Significantly more so than what it was earlier this season.
  11. Better tonight. Those lowest release points came in his last two innings. He threw a lot of pitches. Way more than I would have liked to see. http://brooksbaseball.net/pfx/release.php?xml=http://gd2.mlb.com/components/game/mlb/year_2008/month_07/day_24/gid_2008_07_24_flomlb_chnmlb_1//pbp/pitchers/407296.xml&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=1
  12. Well, he was pretty bad when he jumped up to Daytona for the duration of his time there. Of course, he spent little time at Peoria. When he was promoted from Daytona to Tennessee, he did a bit better, but he wasn't terribly impressive, either. Then to start the season at Tennessee, he was just bad. Nearly a 1 to 1 K/BB. His success at Iowa is really nothing like anything else he's done in his career. And he hasn't even hit 40 IP there yet. I'd much rather he develop at Iowa with consistent appearances. Heck he's shown he can actually strike guys out in a stretch of just 6 games. I'd want to see a little more before I get optimistic about his ability to do it consistently at the big league level.
  13. 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 7 K. Not exactly a step forward. Maybe he can avoid a rainout next time.
  14. Hill recovered, I suppose: 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 7 K, 1 WP, 4-3 GO-FO Not what I wanted to see.
  15. I can't recall seeing Cuban's name being associated with a group.
  16. That would be pretty cool. From a fan's perspective, Cuban is probably the closest to a sure thing in regards to increasing payroll without a risk of a significant drop and, more importantly, changing the way this organization thinks.
  17. imagine if Dusty got his hands on Sabathia. He'd pitch him in back to back starts That wouldn't surprise me at all if it happened in the playoffs.
  18. It has to be hard for young pitchers down there. On the one hand, it would probably be best to not throw him anything in the zone and make him try to earn a walk. On the other hand, they're on the mound for such a short period of time and they obviously want to try and impress. Of course, their control in and around the zone probably isn't going to be great at that level, anyways.
  19. In terms of total PAP, Cueto hasn't been quite that bad. He's a distant 18th. Sabathia, Sheets, and Meche are the top 3.
  20. N. Perez's OBP is on the rise after that HBP.
  21. It sure doesn't seem like he does. The rate of sliders has doubled since last season, actually. From FanGraphs.com: FB SL 2005 Indians 82.6% (92.8) 15.6% (86.4) 2006 Cubs 82.8% (92.8) 14.7% (84.2) 2007 Cubs 86.2% (92.3) 9.7% (84.4) 2008 Cubs 75.8% (91.1) 23.0% (83.0) The data has his change at 1.2% this season. I'm not sure if he throws one, so it's likely a misclassified slider. Same with last season, when it was over 4%
  22. Howry throws his slider roughly 25% of the time.
  23. I'd first demand a written guarantee that Piniella wouldn't use him as a lefty specialist.
