  1. Peavy diving across the basepaths with Soriano running gave me a heart attack.
  2. I think that doesn't apply with 2 outs. Yay for random baseball rules! It's like that for similar reasons for the infield fly rule. If there were less than two outs the catcher could drop the ball on purpose and throw to second for one and then to first. Makes sense. The rule actually protects the batter.
  3. Props to the person that has Peavy and Lilly starting tonight on his fantasy team. <<<<<<< Then again, those 4 ER can't be helping.

  5. Can someone clarify a baseball rule for me? I thought a wild pitch/passed ball strike 3 is an automatic out if there's someone at first. Ted Lilly was batting in the 2nd with Reed Johnson at first. Why was he allowed to run to 1st?
  6. I was silently saying to myself, "Don't pitch Peavy like a normal pitcher, Lilly." This is why Zambrano gets so many hits.
  7. Remember yesterday, when we scored 1 on a Soriano lead off HR and then 2 more in the 2nd? Yeah...
  8. Well, at least the pitcher's spot is out of the way now.
  9. When will Steinbrenner learn that his overpriced players, outside of a few, are just not that good anymore?
  10. Anybody catch this on ESPN2 last night? It talks about Bobby Valentine's managerial career over in Japan. I only caught the last 10 minutes of the 90 minute documentary, but those 10 minutes were absolutely fascinating. I would love to watch the entire thing. However, I have no idea when it's going to be shown again or if it's out on DVD.
  11. Can people stop saying this is a low risk move? If he comes in and stinks up the joint, and causes the Cubs to lose games, that sounds pretty high risk if you ask me. Divisions can be decided by 1 or 2 games over the course of 162. Every game is precious. Honestly, he's not going to suck any more than Felix Pie would or Reed Johnson vs. righthanders would, so I would think that qualifies as "low risk". Jim Edmonds will have very little to do with the Cubs winning or losing games unless Lou foolishly bats him in the first 5 slots in the order. The problem is, you could get very similar production from Pie while developing him and giving him big league at bats. If the Cubs are getting bad at bats, they might as well come from someone who isn't 38 years old and on the downside of their career. True, at least this will end the Reed Johnson vs. RHP foolishness.

  13. change "hideki matsui or bobby abreu" to "turd in a paper bag" and it's still a done deal. The Yankees would probably think they're giving up too much.
  14. those stats (save bb:k) are skewed in part by a .356 BABIP, good for 7th worst in all of baseball Yeah, but what's his LD% against?
  15. As I understand it he's cleared waivers therefore, no team has put in a claim meaning all Hendry has to offer is the league minimum. just because he CAN offer league minimum, doesn't mean he WILL. The teams didn't pass on Edmonds, they passed on him at his current salary. THe OP is saying that Hendry is thinking that SURELY a lot of other teams are interested in him at a reduced rate, so Hendry will outbid himself. Any money paid to Edmonds is deducted from his salary as a Padre. Jim Edmonds will make 8M this season no matter if he plays in Chicago, Tampa, Gary, or he goes home and sits on his ass. There is no reason for any team to voluntarily pay more money to get Edmonds because it's only going to benefit the Padres, not Edmonds. Exactly. The Cubs will not gain any more leverage if they offer Edmonds $1M instead of league minimum. Edmonds will have his pick of the litter from all the teams that are interested in him. And his pick is the Cubs.
  16. Must be kinda weird for the Padres to be playing against someone they're paying.
  17. Cubs do well against the top echelon pitchers. So, I'm not all doom and gloom for this game.
  18. No, that is why sacrifice bunts that aren't executed well are stupid. no, bunting with your #2 hitter is stupid. or, having a #2 hitter who you'd rather bunt with in that situation is stupid. That makes no sense. Bunting with your #2 hitter - essentially trying to put 2 runners in scoring position for your 2 best hitters is stupid knowing full well this game may be called very soon? http://www.tangotiger.net/RE9902.html Slightly more runs expected with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs than runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. That's the run expectancy chart. But the Cubs were playing for one run. I would think the probability of scoring 1 or more run is greater with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out than 1st and 2nd with no outs.
  19. Lou! Please stop batting Johnson vs. righties!!
  20. Why did they chase Simon Bon out of the booth with only 2 outs? BTW, Simon. The Sinatra/Kelly musical was called Take Me Out to the Ball Game.
