    But see, this is my point...Bad managers can ruin teams, but only a very few can improve them. At least that's my point of view. Girardi to me is not a bad manager, but I'm not convinced he's a good one. And call me greedy, but I want a good one. I don't think Girardi will wreck a team, I just don't think he'll make it a great one either.

    I'm not sure this is really your area of expertise Bruce, but do you think this is a realistic possibility to hope for?

    The 97 Marlins team did not have a low payroll. They had some big names on that team. Fair enough...but they did use those big names to trade for the younger talent to start the "talent farming" style of team management that they continue to use today.

    Seriously, every single one of his suggestions were completely superficial and non-baseball related. 6 were strictly fan related. Not only did he fail to mention anything specifically baseball related (ie, fire Dusty), he couldn't even list a general baseball comment (get better pitchers). And to top it off, it wasn't even funny. Pitchers? Bah...that's so trivial. But that Zambrano billboard behind home plate is critical to the future success of the Cubs.

    I am very much of the opinion that Joe is getting way too much credit. The Marlins may have had a huge firesale, but the end result was loading up on a lot of high-end talent from their trading partners' minor league teams. All in addition to having one of the best hitters in all of baseball. Everyone saw the talent, it was just a matter of them getting the experience at the major league level to get into a position to compete. The Marlins won two World Series with low payroll teams and 2 different managers. Now they're having low payroll success again with a third manager, and I'm thinking like Pedro is. Joe is getting too much credit. The Marlins have found a way to maximize talent under a small payroll, take advantage of it while they can keep it cheaply, and then trade it away for new young talent to rebuild yet again. Joe is a placeholder manager that hasn't done anything too wrong, but too say he's done so much right that the Marlins are winning is giving him too much credit, in my opinion.

    Baseball and basketball are so different though. Even a winning Pittsburgh doesn't bring in the revenue that a losing Cubs does. The market is just different. The A's win all the time, but they still have to have a smaller payroll than say San Francisco or LA. Basketball has a salary cap, and that help make all the team compete on the same level. You don't hear a lot of about market disparities in the NBA, because it's just not the same issue. Some of that also has to do with basketball being an indoor game, and playing half as many games as baseball does. I simply don't think Cuban is going to view the Cubs and Pirates as having the same long term potential.

    But the revenue would be SO much more for the Cubs. Cuban's all about winning. I think he can see that Chicago's major market would afford a better opportunity for that in the long run.

    I don't need Hendry to believe that OBP is the most important offensive stat. I just want him to understand that it's a valuable stat, that should be included in the overall analysis of a player.

    How are the Redskins "a joke so far"? We're two flippin games in! They played a tight game with the Vikings at home and trailed the Cowboys by 7 heading to the 4th quarter at Dallas. That makes them a joke? gflore, Portis played against the Vikings and played most of the game so get that right. As far as the Panthers go, you're basically taking last year's offense substituting Steve Smith for Keyshawn Johnson and adding in DeAngelo Williams who is a stud. Yes they haven't looked good, but maybe the Falcons and Vikings have pretty good defenses? For crying out loud people, the Bears are the favorite and they should be. Leave it at that. It's just stupid when you try to spin that the Panthers and Redskins are on equal ground or not much better than the stinkin Lions and Packers. Use a little common sense. Sorry, but the Redskins look terrible. And more specifically, Brunell looks awful. I think Houston beats them this week actually.

    Someone who gets it. I honestly think the Bears should handle the Vikings relatively easily. I'm not going to make any predictions, but I think I'll be right come Sunday. I think the same. But I don't think the Bears will win over the skeptics till they win a non-division game.

    That quote is so infuriating to me because Maddux was here for 2.5 years and I don't think any young pitcher improved during that time. He can't teach them to pitch. Just like Jordan can't coach players to be great. Marshall supposedly spent a whole lot of time around Maddux if I recall, and he improved quite a bit during that time I thought.

    I'm already going bazonkers. If they win this weekend, I'll be boozonkers, and if they win next week I'll be boozoorific. For each consecutive win, we need a status update on this...

That is the lamest group pick em ever. The funny thing is, that Schlereth would be clearly the best of the bunch if he'd picked the Bears both games...heh.
