  1. I remember the Cubs passing on Jim Thome because Hee Seop Choi was waiting in the wings. Perhaps they remember that as well. In that case, it was a good idea. Thome was aging. In hindsight, it might look like a bad move, but the Cubs had one of the top 20 prospects in the game, and Thome was a 32-year old, seeking a 5-6 year deal in the double digit millions. I realize it's not a direct parallel, but my point is that the Cubs may look back on a situation like that, and the "youth movement" we had this season, and want to have veteran guys in there instead of young guys. And if they can get value back for Pie, I could see that approach, especially being a major market team that can supposedly afford the higher priced, proven talent.

  3. This ishilarious! Laugh out loud funny.
  4. So I this out from a co-worker today, and it could be specific to Insight Communications cable service, but I definitely thought it was worth mentioning to you guys, given that Jon's highlights have been removed... On my dvr, if I chose the On Demand programming, we have an option called "The Free Spot". It basically has on demand samplings from numerous channels. NFL network has weekly 10 minute replays for every game! It shows all the highlights of the game with the home team radio announcers call over it! The Bears-Niners highlights have Joniak and Thayer over them. It's like they stole Jon's highlights. Anyway, it might be worth looking through your On Demand selection to see if NFL Network has anything available for you. Especially if you don't get to see the games normally since it's a non-ESPN'd highlight package.
  5. You can bet your life on it that that streak will end next week, though. I hope the Bears aren't looking ahead to next week, but I know I sure am.
  6. Culpepper could be out for the season. May be placed on IR.
  7. 2nd week in a row that the Bears aren't included in John Clayton's 1st and 10 column. Not that I'm surprised. The Niners and Dolphins aren't exactly "must-see" viewing.
  8. Len should write an Op-Ed piece for the Tribune sports page. You meant Daily Herald right????
  9. Thanks for the input Bruce. I'm not sure that there was really an implication that Hendry was behind a smear campaign....maybe there was and I just ignored it...that's certainly possible. I certainly don't believe that. I just think there's a perception about A-ram out there that tends to overwhelm any of the statistical evidence (even non-sabermetric stats) that he's been a top performer during his Cubs career. I think your input about his relationship with the media is very telling as far as that goes though. I guess I'm just disappointed that he would get so much focus when there were so many areas that actually are problematic.
  10. 9 posts before a Cuban reference! I would've guessed it would be much sooner... :)
  11. Mariotti: Couch: As far as Deluca, I'm not finding any "opinion" piece where there's a stated preference on Juan. Simply references like "Leadoff hitter Juan Pierre is a free agent and is as good as gone with Baker leaving."
  12. Pierre sure didn't produce in April and May. Why give him big bucks? But you won't hear any outcry from the media on that...Pierre works really hard and he hustles.
  13. Harping on Aramis or harping on the nonsense? Sorry, that was worded poorly. They were harping on Aramis. Saying he's not worth the money he's asking for the amount of effort he puts forth...etc. Though they acknowledged that Steve Stone had been on and said that if you let A-Ram go and you sign Soriano, then you're really not any better off than you were. Jeez. Scratch those 2 radio hosts as defenders, then. I could have sworn I heard them defending Aramis the other day. That's a bummer. I would have hoped those guys would see past the nonsense. Also, how on earth are people forgetting that Soriano is the same guy that threatened to sit out if he was made to play LF? To be honest, I value B&B's insight on football and basketball MUCH more than baseball.

  15. Even Boors and Bernstein were harping on this "lazy' nonsense yesterday. And those guys are usually pretty much right on with most of their opinions, (even if they don't always say it in the nicest possible way).
  16. Jon, you'll be happy to know that Manning's fumble recovery was changed to a pick. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/121010,CST-SPT-bearnt02.article
  17. Invite him to discuss the matter in this thread...he may not be terribly flattered with some of the comments here, but I think we can keep the discussion at a reasonable level...
  18. The article says Fox is protecting the game because its at 3 PM and its the most highly watched game of the week. I thought the game was supposed to be at noon. Hey now...you keep quiet with your "facts" and "schedules"... :P
  19. An interesting articleabout flexible scheduling and the dueling that may be occuring between NBC and Fox over the Bears/Patriots game...
  20. FJM just did a number on this. Woohoo! I emailed them about this article this morning... :) is your name craig by any chance? Indeed it is...hadn't read that comment.

  22. I try never to listen to the Score between 12 and 2. It's like open mic night at the idiots club. I also get a kick out of people that clamor for Soriano but think Aramis is lazy. Really it's anytime before 2:00. Most of the stuff after that is listenable. Although I'm not a big fan of Buffone or O'Bradovich when they're on. But yeah, Mike Murphy really does have a lot of terrible callers.
  23. I'm going to venture a guess and say that this sentence is not one that is frequently used.
