  1. Yeah. And I completely understand if anyone mistook my first post as "OH NO, THE POOR SOUL THAT HAS TO PLAY BASEBALL FOR A LIVING". But regardless, it was at least rumored that they had previously discussed "third round money" and now it looks like he'll get about an eighth of that if he wants to sign. He's still insanely lucky overall, and he has options and all of them are good options, but there is a pretty damn big distinction between 100K and 800K.
  2. Well, maybe it was an overreaction. But I was really just saying it would have to be disappointing to think you are getting 800K and have to "settle" on 100K. Yes, he's extremely lucky and much luckier than I am. That's not the point. The point is if he signs for 100,000 and blows out his arm the next day, he's lost out on $700,000. I think that would be a big deal. That's all I meant.
  3. I couldn't care less about the 7 walks, personally. He's striking out in less than 12% of his at-bats. He has an on-base percentage that is pushing .400. It's not his fault if he is swinging at strikes, getting hits, and getting on base before the walks. To my knowledge he's not know as a "hacker". He's supposed to be off-the-charts in terms of baseball intelligence. He knows he's not going to slug .500 long-term. He'll take his walks when he's not teeing off of the opposition. I don't have a problem if they want to leave him at A- ball for a little longer considering his age, but I could totally understand a promotion, too.
  4. From a purely humane perspective (non-sports perspective), I hate this for Clifton. He had no reason to be dishonest and claimed the Cubs lead him to believe (obviously nothing was official) they would sign him for "third round money". Granted, this kid is 18 and in my line of work I know how 18 year olds can be told one thing and hear another. However, for whatever reason, he was under the impression he was going to receive a really healthy bonus and also said publicly that he really wasn't the type to want to further their education. It's gotta be crushing to him. All that being said, he's an extremely talented pitcher that can fine tune his talents at a JUCO for a couple years and come back and even stand to increase his value. So I can only feel so bad.
  5. These AA signed, game-worn batting gloves are awesome. They've arrived and they are as advertised. Awesome, kickass effort in the signature, but only a legible "A" and then blips that go up and down as if his name was "Aiiiiiii Aiiiiiiiiii" without dotting any of the "i"s. We both use the German 7 which is pretty cool, though. http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r732/weis21/66ef7bd0-5cc5-402e-b454-72618e1c7c5b_zps9602e44a.jpg?t=1373511428
  6. It would be hard for me to find it from my phone, but I believe there was a chance he could see some action next month (obviously if things progress well from here). Sorry in advance if that is off base, but I think that is what I recall.
  7. Should be really fun watching Hoffman next year. Just needs to say healthy...
  8. For what it's worth (probably not much) - ESPN Jayson Stark chat:
  9. Fangraphs did an article about Gregg's new-found success and claim it could be from a "wider base": http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/kevin-gregg-with-a-wider-base/
  10. :hello:
  11. Areitta will be his new "boy" by the end of the year and all will be forgotten.
  12. Not saying you are wrong - and maybe I've missed something that has been said - but how do we know they don't have the money to be spent? I guess history would lead us to believe they wont necessarily break the bank on 2014 for a few reasons, but I've not heard anything specific to spending limitations. Regardless, like you said, the talent available is underwhelming. I could see them picking up somebody like a Choo or Ellsbury, though.

  14. I was never offended. Just thought it was a douchebag response and wasn't very helpful. Like TT said, he could have just avoided it. But again, I guess that is his thing and some people must enjoy it.
  15. It took me like 30 seconds. It's basically the same advice I give all my students for any [expletive] job that doesn't require special certification.
  16. Yeah, there's no denying the question in itself was pretty stupid. But maybe it's just some [expletive] middle school kid who doesn't know any better. Just give a helpful answer and say, "grad school isn't necessary. what is necessary is to get a degree in something that relates to the sector of the industry that interests you. then try to gain as much experience as possible (through internships, primarily). It's a long shot, though, so be cognizant of this if you aspire to work for MLB".
  17. Exactly. I always have several advisees that intern with minor league teams every year. Some have interned with professional teams and one is currently interning with MLB this summer, actually.
  18. Maybe reading his dozen or so smartass answers before that one helped to shape and mold my opinion of that answer too. It obviously wasn't extremely helpful, but whatever. Sorry for derailing the thread.
  19. I get he was asked for his advice and he gave it. I was just pointing out he was just an unnecessary prick about it. But I guess that's his shtick so whatever.
  20. Well yeah, statistically speaking it's probably near impossible. My problem is the way he characterized the grad degrees as a "waste of money". As if they would be rendered useless if he didn't get into a baseball position. It was just a cocky, stupid answer. Anyways, it's not pertinent to this thread and I'll quit my random rant.
  21. From Keith Law's Chat: Also, what an arrogant, unhelpful answer:
  22. haha, my thoughts exactly. Though, my signature is barely more legible (if indeed it is more legible). I just thought it was a cool piece with an awesome looking signature. And since the proceeds are going to RC, it was an easy decision.
  23. Not a whole lot to add other than I just won these Alcantara game worn, signed batting gloves through the Smokie's online auction to raise money for the Oklahoma Red Cross. \:D/
