  1. Appel passed on that statement in lieu of the traditional conference call with Pirate beat reporters. Probably a reason he fell to #8.
  2. Maybe they're expecting to acquire some upper level pitching talent through Garza, Dempster and maybe LaHair trades.
  3. Looks like the Cubs got good value. No real reaches. The only pick that bothers me the first day is Johnson because of the arm issues, but I can understand the pick after they went Almora at #6. The system needs live arms, and in numbers, in a bad, bad way. Let the attrition rate fall where it may.
  4. Yep. Don't really love their system, but it never hurts to get their names into the bidding acution this early. I'm still dreaming of a Turner and Castellanos package from the Tigers. They need a really high end consistent pitcher. They have Verlander and a bunch of back of the rotation guys. Scherzer and Porcello have been bad.
  5. Rickey Ledee, Alfonso Soriano and Nick Johnson. Oh wait, that's the package we were going to get for Sammy.
  6. Nobody is claiming he's going to get a 8.46 WAR, but when we're approaching 150 PAs we're getting a sample size large enough to suggest he can hit on the major league level. Frankly, the weird negativity towards this kind of dirt cheap production is very odd. It's like people have invested so much of their personal ego into predicting his failure that they can't just sit back and enjoy it. Yes, he may be an flukey exception, but exceptions are often undervalued assets.
  7. By the end of this week he'll have 150 PAs with the Cubs with a cumulative OPS over 1.000+. Throw in the mashing he was doing at AAA last year before the call up, and that's one heck of a hot streak.
  8. I think he'll be here for a while. For a front office that historically loves finding undervalued players, you can't get more undervalued than LaHair.
  9. Especially bringing up Rizzo before his vesting date when LaHair is picking up right where he left off last year. Even if one thinks LaHair is fool's gold long term, let him continue to rack up the plate appearances and continue to mash and prop up his trade value.
  10. Hard to believe Vitters is still just 22 in AAA. Feels like he's been in the system 7 years.
  11. hopefully next year all the free agents are like 23 Or how about 30 instead of 34? I know, these are highly controversial statements. Chum's in the water. Begin the NSBB groupthink feeding frenzy.
  12. I keep thinking the age of last year's top end free agents was a problem, which is why Theo kept repeating that he was looking to add free agents in their prime years. Especially if you were skeptical of Pujols actual age. Beltran, Aramis, Rollins, Cuddyer, etc. were all in or approaching their mid-30s. Reyes and Fielder were the only high end free agents in their primes, and they both carried unique injury/body type issues.
  13. I remember when he was sitting at the table with Eddie Murphy in a fat suit farting.
  14. I have a buddy who has been railing for a few weeks now on how Boras has had a horrible offseason. Not anymore. After the Rangers spent their money on Darvis and the Cubs acquired Rizzo and obviously went in full rebuild mode, I thought Boras had priced himself into a corner where he had the Nats negotiating against themselves. But there's always the mystery team. Seriously, I don't know why a high profile baseball player would have anyone else as their agent. He's the best at what he does.
  15. I don't know why I convince myself every year that this will be the offseason that Boras doesn't absolutely fleece someone for his star client.
  16. I thought Kerry signed the below market 1 year contract under the wink and a nod understanding that he would have a job in the organization after he retires. If Theo isn't keen on having around a lot of ex-jock "consultants" hanging around the front office, and Greg Maddux has since resigned his consultant position, the 1 year bargain basement might not be that appealing any more.
  17. Let's grow the Wrigley infield grass 2 feet high and boost that trade value.
  18. I'm very happy and greatly relieved we didn't go the Edwin Jackson/Mark Buerhle route to adding pitching this offseason. Seems like Hoyer had pretty good results in San Diego taking flyers on cheap pitching with 2010 Garland and 2011 Harang, though I'm sure the PetCo factor was a part of that.
  19. I wouldn't be surprised if Theo threw in a Cubs prospect to get the package he really wants from the Tigers, particularly Vitters. After quickly dealing away Cashner and Colven within a couple of months of having the job, it's kinda apparent he really doesn't have much regard for Henry's eye for talent/skillsets.
  20. It feels like some people (not posters on this board, just in general) are a bit overly down on Rizzo given that he was the centerpiece to pretty ugly Gonzales trade and didn't tear it up immediately during his cup of coffee. It's like it was up to a 21 year old hitting in a canyon of a ballpark to show that the Red Sox didn't just completely rob an MVP candidate for a handful of magic beans. If they had just left Rizzo in AAA and let him continue to rake there without the expectations, where he was the youngest everyday starter in the PCL, I wonder if there would be so much skepticism. If you just objectively judged Rizzo based on his age and numbers and completely took the Gonzales trade out of it, which wasn't his fault, it feels like people would be higher on him.
  21. Any predictions on the next trade? I think Byrd will be dealt next.
  22. I imagine the majority will have Rizzo ahead of BJax. Personally, I'm not sold that Rizzo's bat is that much better than BJax's bat to offset for the positional value BJax has over him (although Rizzo is a slick fielder at first), so personally, I'll still have BJax ahead. what do you see from Rizzo's bat that you don't like? Just taking a quick glance at his slash stats, it looks like he's hit wherever he's been accept his admittedly disappointing 118 ABs in the majors this year. At 21 years old playing in a canyon of a ballpark.
  23. Wow, it really feels like Byrnes just completely soured and gave up on Rizzo.
  24. Most people are racists and misogynists, except me because I'm above unfairly stereotyping.
