So when does your respect for older players start? 1980 forward? Was Willie Mays also worthless in your eyes? Dimaggio? Ernie Banks? Those guys were great, just like Ruth, in their era.

Ruth would see one 95mph split-finger and drink himself into oblivion. Ruth would see the bandboxes we play in today (and the launching pad that is Coors Field) and faint from giddyness. Too bad he wouldn't be able to make contact with any of the pitches. I'm sure he'd be great in BP, though.

That wasn't how he wanted to play baseball. He thought he had a better chance to get on base and thus help his team if he played the way that he knew best, which was slapping the ball to all fields i.e. Ichiro. He was wrong, then.

That's a fine point and you might have me there, but I'd still take Sosa. This is how baseball people stay ignorant. me Tarzan and you Jerk "I know that all the statistical evidence points in the opposite direction, but I'll go with Sosa because he had a lot of the numbers that I'm comfortable with." So if Olerud was put in Sosa's place that year, Olerud would have contributed the equivalent of 158 RBI's and 134 runs scored to the Cubs' campaign? I'm pretty confident that his presence in the lineup that season would have been worth more runs than Sammy's.

Unfortunately the most likely explanation for his poor performance today was that he's Sean Marshall. Weak argument. How is what he said in any way wrong? Right now Marshall is a No. 5, No. 5's get lit up from time to time. He's young and he's not a guy that you expect to dominate every time he steps on the mound, he's the exact kind of pitcher that you would expect to give up a lot of runs every once in a while. The implication was that Marshall is a poor pitcher. This is Marshall's second (maybe third depending on your definition) bad outing of the year. That to me is FAR from a poor pitcher. Now if he was trying to imply something else, then that certainly didn't come across. Whether it was because he was trying to say he was a poor pitcher, or whether it was simply that he wasn't getting his point across very well...either way, it was a weak argument. I think that his abrasive nature is causing you to assume his argument, because I certainly didn't take it that way. Sean Marshall is going to be a pitcher that will probably always be prone to a game here and there where he gives up a bunch of runs.

NEW RULES FOR TIM TO ADD TO THE GUIDELINES 1.) Whenever the Cubs are winning a game, no one is allowed to post. You just have to sit at home and enjoy the lead. 1a.) If the Cubs are winning a game, you are not allowed to post. If the opposing team ties the game up, posting will be allowed when the opposing team has runners in scoring position, or when the Cubs are at bat with two outs and no one on base. 1b.) If the Cubs come from behind to tie up a game that they were previously losing, posting is not allowed under any circumstances until the opposing team takes a lead.

I couldn't agree more. Kendall has a past, and the hope was to catch lighting in the bottle. Maybe coming back the central will wake up his bat. I don't see the big deal, its not like Bowen or Hill are any good anyway. I still hold out hope he'll adjust to NL pitching soon and help the club. Soto may be good. He was the only guy who actually stood a chance of doing something good this year. Look I don't know anything about Soto, but why didn't he come up before Hill if he's so good? Why didn't he come up after Barrett was gone and we had Bowen/Hill up? Is it really everyone blocking him? I would think if he's so good, he'd been given a chance. Its not like guys aren't getting chances this year from the minors. Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus ranked Soto the #3 catching prospect in the minors right now (not including new draftees). what does that nerd know that the cubs dont?
