  1. It doesn't seem like I'm being that obtuse. Every pitching staff in the NL playoffs did significantly better vs. right-handed batters than left-handed batters. How is it not therefore a detriment to have a significant portion of your offense tied up in right-handed hitting? I'm not saying it's not a detriment, I'm saying that it's not a surprise that a league that has a majority of RHB has worse splits against RHP. there are more rhp and rhb than lhp and lhb ... so it's common sense that splits against RHB will be lower. I would imagine every pitching staff in baseball with a majority of RHP did better against RHB, how is that a surprise?
  2. All three playoff teams in the NL were significantly better pitching to RHB. Brewers had the smallest split: .255 .318 .396 .257 .331 .420 Last year's Diamondbacks were: .255 .318 .396 .271 .353 .450 Since most pitchers are right handed and most hitters are right handed, this isn't a surprise. i thought we were talking about how we did this year against "good rhp" Wait, that makes no sense. Why isn't it a surprise? RHP have more success against RHB than against LHB? that's not a shocker Those aren't righty-on-righty splits. Those are entire pitching staff on righty splits. do they have more LHP on their roster than RHP? i'm so confused on what kind of point you think youre making

  5. Good call. Lee was obviously the villain in this series. And there is minimal blame to be put on Hendry. He put together a near 100 win team that didn't show up for the playoffs. That's not on him. They played tight and coughed it up. He made decisions that made them heavily right-handed, making them vulnerable to a team with lots of good right-handed pitching. Bull Howry. They scored the most runs in the league vs. RHP and had the second best OPS vs. RHP over 161 games. Stats against all RHP != stats against good RHP. again with no proof i'm not opposed to it being right, i'd just like to see it there in front of me
  6. And how do we split that up into, say, upper-quartile and lower-quartile RHP? you made the claim, do it yourself
  7. This is undoubtedly true. The fact that Lee has hit like Jeromy Burnitz over the second half of the season doesn't help. LOL at stranding Soto on 3rd. completely hamstrung us to the tun of 97 regular season wins with the same lineup we are not the first favored team to lose in the playoffs, guys Reading is fundamental. The theory is that you face more good right-handed pitching in the playoffs, and good right-handed pitching has advantage over good right-handed batting. "we are not the first favored team to lose in the playoffs, guys" We're the first ones in a while to have a playoff losing streak of 9 (Red Sox before the 90s, I think, hit 11). And again: We aren't just losing, we are getting annihilated. The reason good teams lose a lot is that sometimes your runs just are scored optimally and you win a game by 4 and lose two by one each. That's not happening here. They are getting utterly and completely destroyed every single game. i'd like to see what our record was against good rhp this season before i believe it. it sounds like something someone would make up without checking out the numbers because it sounds right.

  9. seriously, you believe in a curse? I believe in an organizational effect of some kind that causes the Cubs to play worse in the playoffs. Getting the wrong types of players, the field, the day games, the pressure? I don't know, but it's something. We're up to being outscored 56-18 in the last 9 playoff games. what were they in the 9 before that 3-6 record, I'd have to check the numbers later. 6-3
  10. Vance, you know better he does know better, but he was right.... I'm not talking about the ump's call, I'm talking about Vance's language. He was wrong. just to raise a point, nccub made a thread in rants called "F FOX". I'm not sure i see a difference

  20. man i love grant balfour, what a lunatic you hear his name and you think hockey goalie, you hear his voice and you think rugby player and you watch him pitch and you think insane asylum
  21. I hope they don't think that this will enable the Rays to sign high priced free agents. Merchandise sales of MLB licensed stuff is shared with all 30 teams. This means when all those Yankee and Red Sox fans buy up all that Yankee and Red Sox gear, they're helping out everyone in MLB. They don't have to, they have to lock up their current roster (BJ, CC, Kazmir) and a 97 win team, the youngest team in the playoffs, with the best farm system in the game will only get better. Actually, their farm system is very good because of all the high draft picks they've had during the crap years. This is how the Tigers got to the World Series in 2006. With this good season behind them, the Rays will have a low pick next year. A little known fact about the MLB draft is that, unlike the NFL and NBA, teams cannot trade their pick positions. This means the Rays cannot offer, say, Carl Crawford and Rocco Baldelli to the team with the first pick next year for that pick. DYK? If you draw four balls, you get a walk. But be careful! Three strikes and you can TAKE A SEAT, MEAT!
  22. good point, so let's start jason marquis instead of rich harden and run bat boys out onto the field in cubs uniforms between innings to try and trick the dodgers into losing
  23. Or the Dodgers will continue to clean the Cubs' clock. There would be a run to the bat rack. Harden deserves this start and not to give it to him is a fireable offense. I wasn't agreeing with the not starting Harden stuff, just throwing some stuff out that you know the media will eat up. Kind of "reverse bulletin board material." Not a real large chance it makes any difference, but its an interesting idea that could be worth a shot (I mean what do you have to lose). An elimination game. yeah, i dont know, the series? holy crap these two games have made people [expletive]
  24. oh my god what is this
