    Yeah, this is the perfect opportunity to trade Soler for some pitching or whatever and pick up a 3-win certainty OF in his place. It's completely reasonable (based on his playoff performance) that he is that or more by this year even, but it's probably not worth the risk.

    The issue isn't whether you are "happy" to let him opt-out after the three years. The issue is whether that scenario is *good enough* to balance out the downside of being stuck with him if he isn't. Would you give 33-year-old David Price (coming off three straight healthy, productive years) 4/120?

    so what? if you dont give him an opt out and just give him straight 7/210, and he's good but not great, he can't opt out anyway, so what's the difference

    To me, the overpay comes in the form of the opt-out after three years. He's the highest paid pitcher in history, it's probably tough to get much more money after that. I would not hesitate to give these guys opt outs. If I can get three years of a stud pitcher but he walks away for more money after, fine by me. Give me the three year of studliness for only money and I am all set. yeah for real, that's best case scenario.

    It seems like a viable option. Starlin had a really good month or whatever to end the year, but he is pretty objectively meh at best. Gardner would seem like selling high on Starlin. If we go after Heyward and cheap(ish) pitching, Gardner wouldn't be needed. If we go after Price or Greinke or whatever, then Gardner would be cool with me.
