  1. I disagree with you for yet another reason that you can't quantify. Bone headed plays, even if irregular, lead to your club being the 2006 Cubs.
  2. Actually....you're right. That's for another thread I suppose.
  3. The fundamental insight that spurred the development of this metric was the realization that balls in play that turn into outs for every pitcher tend towards the same value. The primary variables are: 1) type of batted ball (gb, fb, ld) and 2) defensive efficiency. #1 varies by pitcher and #2 varies by team. Not every individual ball has the same chance of becoming an out, but over the course of thousands of balls put in play per year, this has been repeatedly shown to average out. What this means is that looking at the efficiency of the defense is a very valid metric. I understand your stance, and your opinion - that's not the problem. I'd like you to answer the question about where overthrowing cutoff men, throwing to the wrong base, Barrett calling 8,000 fastballs (on 0-2 and 1-2 counts) a game, Pierre playing about 10 feet behind second base, etc etc comes into play by numbers? Edit: Meant to type 0-2 and 1-2 :D
  4. Quite a bit until DirecTV told me to F off. Oh, and we hijacked this thread.
  5. Isn't that making the assumption that on every possible ball in play, the defense could have a % to record an out? What about after the out is recorded, and you miss the cutoff man by throwing it 5 feet above his head? Where's that written down in numbers? What about the ability to not only record outs - but limit advancing base runners? What about double plays? I could go on and on here.
  6. Ask Jason Marquis what he thinks about our outfielders when the seasons over.
  7. I couldn't have phrased this any better if I wanted to.
  8. Then what do you base your opinon on, their astrological signs? I knew I'd get a smarmy remark in about 15 seconds. I apologize for not basing my entire baseball opinion on numbers. So does every manager and coach in professional sports. BTW, when did I attack anyone in this thread previous to your reply? What DO you base your opinion off of then? State your case instead of just saying "Numbers, I don't like them". And tangentially, which is going to be more flawed, a defensive metric, or your recollection of all 30 teams defense/individual defensive reputation? I'm really (trust me) not trying to be a smart a** - but yea, I do base it off my personal observations more than what a stat sheet says. For defense, anyway. And honestly? I'd wager most managers agree with me on that. Do I know that for sure? No, but it's my opinion.
  9. Then what do you base your opinon on, their astrological signs? Even the most saber-inclined fan (myself included) will admit that there isn't a tried and true, reliable way to measure defensive ability yet for baseball players. There are some decent metrics popping up, but nothing that's nearly as widely accepted as some of the offensive metrics. You measure defensive ability by sitting on your butt watching games, not pouring over baseball prospectus efficiency ratings. Offensively, yea, I'll look at some stats. But defensively? Come on. There's variables out the wazoo. Besides: Cedeno: 23 errors Jones: 7 errors (and many terrible runner-advancing throws) Ramirez: 13 errors Soriano: 11 errors Even Zambrano: 4 errors I don't even think range factor is applicable with half our team playing their 2nd or 3rd career positions. Oh, and Barrett calls a crappy game.

  11. Stats and numbers, numbers and stats. I can't believe any chart that has the geriatric giants at #7, sorry. Where's the numerology for Jacque Jones being an idiot?
  12. My eyes! Whatever happened to being dapper, being simple, being stylish without being loud? And just to nitpick NorthsideAvenger, cursive lettering has no place on jerseys.
  13. Yep. Oh, and yes - our defense is crappy. There's Lee...and...that's about it.
  14. This is a unique perspective from the cubs... I was waiting for someone to bring this up. Also, what can be said for the Cubs pitchers' assumed continued reliance on strikeouts - due to our also assumed crappy defense? On Marmol: Not only was he converted into a pitcher, but he was converted from being a catcher. Yea, you obviously need to possess a strong arm to play behind the plate - but you aren't utilizing/strengthening your arm nearly as much as say, a SS or RF. Stick him in the pen!
  15. So....have we decided if we like Rothschild or not, yet? :D btw: anyone who watched marmol pitch once or twice could see he belongs in the pen
  16. I hate hate hate hate hate hate this argument. I lurk a lot and usually disagree with what you post, TT, but even I have to admit that argument holds no merit. Does Dayn Perry have some dirty pictures of Rupert Murdoch?
  17. Yeah like so bad you were one of three NBA players to average 20 5 and 5. Pure emabrassment. The notion you put forth that MJ could embarass himself on a basketball court, even if he tried, is freakin' insane.
  18. Yup. And who could argue that Sosa wouldn't put in that extra drive and effort to make it work with the Cubs. There's so much good that could happen as opposed to bad here. I know it won't happen, but man, it'd be nice to see Sosa run out to RF again eh?
  19. To all the people that are griping about any possibility of Sosa coming back - do you just enjoy bad endings? Wouldn't it be better (for everyone) if somehow Sosa returned to the majors, and had a decent year? Who is that hurting? Quit drinking so much Haterade for breakfast.
  20. I still remember when I was at a Peoria Chiefs game with a friend, and Sisco came to town as part of the Lugnuts. We asked him for an autograph, pre-game, and were told "Can't you all just wait?" in a very rude, almost annoyed voice. Post game, about 3/4 of the Lugnuts came out to sign autographs, since there were more Lugnuts than Chiefs fans there, and of course - no Sisco.
  21. Hmmm. Who is talking Cubs winning the World Series? I haven't heard it. If someone's talking Cubs WS in '07 they are sadly fooling themselves. John McDonawhatever has said, and was quoted saying: "The Cubs will win the WS in 2007." Seriously. Check.
  22. I know Hill had a good second half, but I'm sorry, I put him right in there with Marmol, Miller, Marshall, and whoever, to COMPETE for a role. No way I just hand it to him.
  23. Totally agree. People on this board hate everything. They hate the sun. They hate air.
