  1. Both teams finished decently above the roster-full-of-rookies Cubs. well, to be fair, the Cubs weren't supposed to have a lot of those guys playing for them this year. I'm just saying, it may be fun to scout rookies and hope they succeed in the big leagues...but I think a lot of that is ego stroking. "I" called this player, "I" said so and so would be great, "I" have been following his stats since whenever....a winning ballclub has veterans, usually at a higher ratio to rookies. Fact.

  3. I wish I was drunk after the Cubs won the series. :(
  4. Well, that too.
  5. The sammy of 1998-2003 is available? Yea, the old Sammy. Not Balitmore Sammy. What can be said for Sosa being universally panned in 2004 for putting up a 35 tater campaign? Could have used that last year. More than anything, I miss his swagger. I know there was the boombox incident and whatever, but he was the FACE OF THE CUBS. Derrek Lee's a great guy, but he just doens't have what Sammy had. Call it 'It', call it charisma....whatever, the Cubs were as plain as grandma's yogurt last year.
  6. I had a whole post of thoughts written up about this...but I'll just say I really miss Sosa right now. Corked bat included. I miss the guy.
  7. You guys are vultures today. A little patronizing, eh?
  8. This is a terrible post. Fact is he doesn't get on base, and he gets himself thrown out too often when he does. He stunk in 2005 and wasn't good in 2006. You know, all of us could sling around insults. I'm not slinging insults. You made a terrible post. You made completely inaccurate claims. We don't have to resign Pierre, we should only tolerate it if he was a cheap one year deal and they got a lot of other production. Your hatred of stats is your own problem that you have to come to terms with, because stats matter. Pierre is not a good baseball player. Terrible post in your opinion, not all. You should respect the opinions of other, even if you think they're terrible. I think Pierre should be retained, so what? so you're saying that people shouldn't disagree with each other? Yes, because, thats what I said. Right.

I just fail to see how a rare commodity like a leadoff hitter, that plays excellent defense, led the NL in hits, and had a .350+ OBP after the break is a terrible player. Not to mention that the pitching we originally gave up to acquire him would wasted. He also presents about a 0% chance of injury over the year.

  11. We HAVE to resign Pierre. I'm so sick and tired of the endless ranting about stats. Fact is Pierre gets on base, makes things happen, and gets in the pitchers head. So he's not the best leadoff man in baseball, so what? After the ASG he was excellent, and its not unreasonable to believe that was the real Juan Pierre, not the late-05/early-06 version. Every championship team has speed at the top of the order. Defensively, Pierre was also the best CF in the NL. Weak arm, but unmatched range.
  12. Keep this in mind - Pierre led the NL in hits and had a .350+ OBP after the break.
  13. God himself could descend from heaven directly upon Wrigley to manage the Cubs and wouldn't be enough for some around here. That's some ridiculous hyperbole. I won't deny that. :)
  14. I have a Mariners fan friend that has been so his entire life, and he will preach about Piniella, and what a gem we possibly have in acquiring him. Baker was not a fit for Chicago, his thin Californian skin was not accustomed to the icy media. We're no New York, but it's no Southern California either. Piniella has managed (obviously) on the biggest stages, the Bronx, and the World Series. He had a 119 freaking win season with the Mariners. Even with the Rays, players like Huff, Baldelli, and Crawford exploded onto the scene. Since, all 3 of those players have arguably regressed. Piniella is a stud, and will lead us into NL Central contention next year if we can acquire some not necessarily top notch, but consistent starting pitching.
  15. God himself could descend from heaven directly upon Wrigley to manage the Cubs and wouldn't be enough for some around here.
  16. Is that really all that matters anymore when deciding if a manager will be successful - talking about OBP? Is there nothing to be said for how a manager defines roles for players, if he is an excellent teacher and mentor, does he make well planned substitutions, etc? So now we've gone from fuming anti-Piniella loathing, to acceptance, just because he brought up OBP at the top of the lineup, probably making you all remember that fad/clique hatred everyone had for Neifi? Jeez.
  17. It's beyond me how any of you can be anti-Piniella. This guy is a hard-nosed winner who will impart a winning attitude and discipline into our lazy Cubs. This man has won a World Series, for a team that was a heavy underdog against the A's in 1990. He was overconfident in taking the Tampa job, but they still showed signs of success in a tough AL East, with numerous players having breakout season in his tenure. Maybe if Piniella had dropped 'VORP' 21 times in a press conference or something he'd be more adored around here?
  18. Are you serious? That's your argument? "Well, if you just throw out a 25+ HR year for only 5M, and add in the fact he *could* suck next year or the one after..." What makes you dislike Jones so much, just because everyone else here does and it's popular?
  19. So this is acceptable now? Personal attacks? I may use adjectives when responding to people, but I'm certainly not talking like this.
  20. So the guy throws a broken bat. He wasn't even freaking aiming at him, he was just in the heat of the moment and threw something that landed at his feet. Man you guys are picky!!! You've never gotten pissed off at your playstation 2 controller and chucked it across the room, accidentally hitting your cat? (Or some other random example). I'm not trying to be insulting, but that is absolutely insane, judgmental, and ludicrous to base ones opinion of a 20 year career on throwing a friggin' broken bat. Man....talk about nit-picking, you guys would make great lawyers and awful diplomats.
  21. So, basically, we here at NSBB dislike any player who doesn't measure up to our statistic based logic and is in the 'in' crowd with fans? What is it with the below-the-radar sarcasm/narcissism on this board? What the hell is wrong with Roger Clemens? He doesn't spend his saturdays handing out $100 bills and driving around kids with cancer to tourist attractions?
  22. Wow, sarcasm? Name one instance where Clemens has exhibited anything below class-act standards, personality wise.
  23. How some of you can dislike Clemens is beyond me. Target your anger at someone much more worthwhile than a perennial all-star, future HOF'er, and class act.
  24. Anyone notice he's hitting around 320/400/550 for San Diego? I haven't seen any Padres games so I don't know about his D at the hot corner...but a 900+ OPS is outstanding.
