  1. I'll never forget how A-Gonzalez hit during the playoffs. The boot was a damned shame for a guy who brought a good glove every day. It is weird how he went from light hitting/smooth fielding during the season to heavy hitting/monumental error in the post season. That's baseball!
  2. Personally, I think Dusty's BIGGEST blunder in 2005 was his undying faith in Corey Patterson. This guy needed to sit in the WORST way, but just couldn't figure out how to lose his job.
  3. Holy Jeez - I just got back from Wal-Mart, where I purchased the Gillette Guillotine. Am I going to die if I use it in the morning? Do I have a deathwish?????
  4. Paul Assenmacher was the balls.
  5. Yeah, Sandberg wasn't bad, but Grace hit .647 and was 11-17. I'll never forget it. Lloyd McClendon quietly had an excellent year, and if I am not mistaken he played every position on the field except P and the Keystone. Bielecki won 18, Maddux 19, & Sutcliffe 16. It was a great team who knew how to execute.
  6. Basically, stats don't tell the whole story. Jerome Walton was a sparkplug for the offense. Remember, the guy had a 30 game hitting streak, was a headache on the bases, and could drop a bunt for a hit at will. Dwight Smith was solid, but he wasn't as big a part of the offense as Walton.
  7. Where would Sosa play should he get picked up by Colorado? I don't think that they are going to bench Brad Hawpe (a guy with a bright future, and a pretty good defensive RFer) to play Sosa. That is sad. Can you imagine saying that just 2 years ago? Who would you want in RF, a prospect or Sammy Sosa. Times are changing.
  8. K-Town, when I say "Purists," I am referring to players being on the same playing field. You make a good point referring to the exclusion of African Americans from the game - that is far from pure in an impure time. Still, that is not comparable to men injecting themselves with horse steroids. It is not acceptable to me that Club Owners and the Commisioner, not to mention the President of the Players Union, brushed off the knowledge that PEDs were widespread because of the economic turnaround that the abuse created. Yes, it was WRONG that black Americans were discriminated against. Those were far from the "Good old days." The Major Leagues have had an element of corruption ever since day one, but that is no reason NOT to criticise it. African Americans NOW play in the Major Leagues. We will always look back and shake our heads. We should also look back (in the future) and recognize the problem that is PEDs, and why it was allowed to happen.
  9. I agree that the increased offensive output, led by the Sosa/McGwire HR race of 98 really helped boost the interest/forgiveness of baseball after the strike. Unfortunately, in the longrun, that same thing is (in my opinion) ruining the game even more deeply than the strike of 94. At least to baseball purists. The game will never be able to determine exactly who was using PEDs, only that the records are definately tainted now. It's a damned shame.
  10. "There's danger in the air, Cherie." I suddenly remember what my favorite Harry moment is. Those of you who have good memories or the "Boys of Zimmer" VHS, when the Cubs clinched the NL East in 89, when Harry was in the locker room getting a bottle of bubbly poured over his head. Glasses off, someone puts a towel on his head, and he wipes his face. "Cubs win! Cubs win!" he exclaimed in grand fashion. God bless him.
  11. I remember when Calvin was playing here in Shreveport for the AA (San Francisco) Captains. He really didn't hit well at all then, which really was unfortunate because he has/had tremendous speed. Regardless - a bunch of the Captains lived upstairs and next to my apartment, and Calvin and a few others would play wiffle ball with us in the parking lot. He was a really nice guy, and that meant a lot to a few college baseball players to be mingling with minor leaguers.
  12. If Todd Walker is not traded, stays healthy, and is our starting 2nd baseman, it is not unreasonable to expect a .290+ average, 80+ runs, 170+ hits, 15-20 HR, 70 RBI and probably a .350+ OB%. That is a steal for 2.5 million, offensively. The Red Sox didn't do so bad with Walker at 2nd base in 03. Despite being replaced in key situations for defensive reasons, his defensive statistics were not horrible, and he made some outstanding plays in the playoffs, not to mention his lights-out hitting. Todd Walker is our best bet at 2nd base. Unless there is a trade for Julio Lugo....
  13. Just got back, and the ball is in his court. I gave him my card (I relace baseball gloves on the side) and hopefully he will give me a call. I won't be holding my breath, because I kinda got the feeling he MIGHT have a lot on his mind. He seemed pretty touched when I told him we all pretty much love his desire to be a Cub, and the sacrifices he made to take whatever role to be in Wrigley. Got a strange feeling that he knows his days are over as a Cub. Maybe not, but I hope he is our 2nd baseman. I have bumped into him in the past, and he wasn't too personable, but he was really friendly tonight. He seems to be getting jerked around.
  14. Ok, I am going to ask him. I'll tell him it is the Cubs version of "SoSH," which this place pretty much seems to be. I am sure he knows about that site from his Red Sox days. Please, tell me who he needs to get in touch with or whatever, and I will put it on the back of my card. That would be pretty damned cool....
  15. ...we are going to the Krewe of Centaur Ball (not by choice) and he is the Grand Marshall. I hope he is a little more personable than he has been in the past, but I suppose I speak for the majority of us Cub fans when I tell him how much we appreciate players like him who sacrifice $$$ because they WANT to be a Cub.
  16. The Tampa Bay White Horses The Tampa Bay Taint The Tampa Bay Bush
  17. I got to see a lot of Theriot (being a LSU fan). I hope to see him make it up - he is a spark plug. At every level, he has been pretty good about having quality at bats. Though he doesn't have any power, he can draw a walk and steal a base. He is a pretty cool, 1st class guy, too. Not a bad SS either.
  18. That is a good question. If you break it down to "who is the better hitter," I believe it is a no-brainer - Albert Pujols. I really can't think of a better overall hitter in the game than Pujols. Challenges welcome. Despite the fact that Pujols is a pretty good fielding 1st baseman, with the ability to play other positions - I would say that Derrek Lee is the better overall player of the two. Lee has good wheels, an incredible glove, and the jury is out concerning if he can continue to destroy inside pitching (the main reason he broke out in 2005). It is true that Pujols can steal a base, but Lee has superior speed, a better glove/reach, and a comparable bat (but not a better bat). In addition, I think it is fair to guess that DLee is going to drive in many more runs and score more runs than he did in 2005 - all because of the acquisition of Juan Pierre.
  19. I can't remember exactly how Harry signed off at the end of the last game in 1997, but I remember it being really forshadowing and ironic regarding his death the following February. God bless Harry Caray.
  20. I think Grace still loves the Cub fans, and vice-versa. As Cub fans, we really don't have a reason to dislike the guy - he obviously wanted to play his entire career in Chicago, and his bitterness stems from not being able to realize that dream. I will still wear my Grace Cub jersey on game day. With zero hesitations. He was a great Cub.
  21. I used to love how Harry would screw a guys name up. "Hey, great catch by young Jerry Walton!" He could never get Ryan Klesko's name right. "Heeeres, ah, Ryan, ummm, Kelsall. Good looking youngster." One of my favorites is when he was once talking about Pat Listach. He tried to pronounce his hometown of Natchitoches, LA - it is really pronounced "NACK-I-TISH." Harry made watching a Cub game a great experience. I love him and miss him.
  22. I don't understand the point of what Grace said concerning cheating? He made fun of the situation with Sosa (who we all know didn't get along with Grace). Grace himself said he was teasing Sammy, who got upset with Mark. Besides, I think it is an old baseball saying. Still crappy to cork your bat. Shows a lot about a person. Grace = greatness.
  23. I agree, RTI. Jones is not an intimidating offensive factor, though he should be solid. Don't know what to expect from Murton, but have an idea. I would like to see the Cubs offense stacked with guys who can draw the walk and run. We haven't been too good at producing runs, despite the high team batting average. Look at the Cardinals - have good hitters who get on base & score runs.
  24. I don't agree - I think the Cubs have improved significantly. * Added leadoff man Juan Pierre. Most importantly, this means we now have a LEGITIMATE leadoff hitter that will change the face of this offense. An additional bonus is that Corey Patterson will not be in the lineup anymore - almost a guaranteed out. Think about it. * The bullpen is improved - taking a lot of pressure off of the starters to go deep. A BIG problem in 2005. * The OF defense is solid. Jacque Jones is a good pickup. There is relative speed at all three OF positions. Pierre & Jones are known to cover a lot of ground, and we won't have to see Jerry Hairston diving for balls that he should catch standing on two feet (not to mention his fist pumping as if it were a Sportscenter Highlight). * There is no telling how good Ronny Cedeno & Matt Murton will be. Murton showed us that he is a tough out, so I am thinking if he shows signs of power - he could fill that #5 hole for us.
  25. Next time you are in S'port - holla.
