  1. My mom is from the south side of Chicago, and my dad is from the Holy Land, so I am not real sure where I fit either.
  2. Coon asses, or Cajuns, are from South Louisiana. Vance, you know that up here in NLA we are rednecks, hicks, or even Yanks. There is a sort of "equator" in Louisiana, in the middle of the state - approximately Alexandria. Anything north of Alexandria is generally Baptist/Redneck, and anything south of Alec (abbreviated slang term for Alexandria) is generally Catholic/Coonass. There's your random Louisiana lesson for the day.
  3. Dtown - welcome to the board, and enjoy the series. Personally, nothing beats the bleachers for a night game. Enjoy the beer and the heckling, should be a lot of fun. After the game, make your way across the street to Hi-Tops and get your drink on.
  4. Grace is one of my favorite players of all time - but I have no problem acknowledging the fact that he isn't even close to HOF standards. Grace was an excellent hitter and fielder. He was one of the greatest Cubs, if you ask me. I always thought he was going to break out and have a .340 season and hit 25 HR or drive in 100. He just didn't have that kind of power. Funny thing is, if he did all that he did as a 3rd baseman - maybe he might have a better arguement? I don't know, but Grace certainly wasn't the typical power-hitting 1st baseman.
  5. Well, Soto is supposedly a pretty good defensive catcher. You won't find a good defensive catcher who is a Nancy-boy. DeLaHoya looks like a poon too, but he can crack some skulls. Also, don't forget the pitch of Mike Tyson's voice.
  6. Just to be clear - people from NW Louisiana are not hillbillies. They are rednecks, and maybe even hicks.
  7. In that picture, I would definately say Zambrano is throwing a two-seamed fastball. You guys are right about the circle change - most pitchers throw that with the ball back in their hand and the index finger sort of wrapped aroung the ball - connected to the tip of the thumb forming a "circle," hence the name "circle change." Also, some people throw the circle change with the ring finger & pinky on the ball, as the point is to have the ball sort of roll out of the pinky side of the hand at release. Here is a picture of Sox pitcher Brandon McCarthy (a little blurry, but you can still see the fingers) throwing a strange circle change, he obviously uses both the index & middle finger in the circle part. I imagine that isn't too hard to pick up for the batter? http://images16.fotki.com/v278/photos/4/41654/199598/BrandonSOX3-vi.jpg
  8. You are win the "Balsa's Favorite Poster of the Offseason" Award. Hands down. Oh God. I am afraid to ask the prerequisites.....
  9. I ripped BJ Ryan's [expletive] in HS. Of course, he only threw about 85 then.... I'll never forget when we were playing BJ's team in American Legion in the summer of 93. It was the playoffs, and we were working him over pretty good. He played for the Bossier Phillies, and their crowd was getting on him pretty hard. As he walked off the field after getting pulled, he gave the stands the "bird." I thought it was funny. BJ is actually from Benton, which is right next door to Shreveport - but that ain't important. That dude can swing the bat too. He hit some incredible bombs in college. BJ's a good guy, I am guessing B was hearing this when he was out drinking - probably with my boy Nate Mixon and Trey Poland - right B?
  10. http://images3.fotki.com/v29/photos/4/41654/306397/P6260054-vi.jpg What are we going to do without this character? Seriously, listen to SouthSideRyan - we don't have to pack heat when walking around our beloved ballpark, but we could stand to have some more projects, crackwhores, and syringes around our park for the kiddos to step on. We do have a dump. It is a wonder why we draw so many fans.
  11. Ole Miss Cub, what years did you play for the Rebels? I had a few real close friends play in the SEC, and was wondering if you knew them or played against them.
  12. In addition, if Pierre is sacrificed leaving 1st open to walk DLee, it is not automatic because pitching around Lee to get to Ramirez, an excellent RBI machine, is not something that will happen all the time. If it is something that happens a lot, I venture to say the Cubs will score a lot more runs. Don't forget that Lee can steal a base, and the 1st & 3rd double steal is not unheard of. That is why we need Murton to step up. There is no true #5 hitter on this team.
  13. Put a "Milo" on that guy (Moneyball is the balls).
  14. In the defense of Neifi Perez hitting 2nd, he is #11 on the active list of sacrifice hits (bunts) to advance runners with 92 in his career. Though I would rather have about 6 or 7 current Cubs hitting in the 2 hole besides Neifi - he is strong in that category. Neifi will never have an OB% even near .350, but he won't strike out a lot (nor walk a lot), and can score runs. He had a couple of nice seasons in 99 and 00, but there is no reason to even ponder Neifi in the 2 hole if you have a Todd Walker, Matt Murton, and Ronny Cedeno to do the job.
  15. I just find myself wondering if it was either Corey Patterson's unwillingness/inability to adjust or Dusty Baker refusal to take him out of the lineup that cost the Cubs the 2005 season. I think it was a combination of the two, I really do.
  16. I don't think there is anything Walker can do about the facial hair. He was like that in High School too.
  17. Hey Wilson A2000 - tell the boys at V&F Transformers (Bartlett, IL) that Gabe says howdy!
  18. Excellent work, Bruce. Those are the kinds of articles that I like to read.
  19. We all know that a player's attitude/relationship with the press determine if they have a chance at Cooperstown. Sammy had a pretty good repoir with the writers, methinks. At least some of them. I'll bet a lot of them wouldn't dare talking about what they see in the clubhouse unless they got really angry at a player.

  21. I think that Mark McGwire being up for HOF voting this coming year, we are going to see the doodoo hit the fan as far as how HOFers, writers, and everyone else feels about McGwire's worthiness. I think that it is up for scrutiny. I don't think players with the cloud of possible steroid use are going to be shoe-ins. It needs to be discussed. Personally, I don't think that ANY player is a HOFer until their name is cleared of steroids. Both Sosa & McGwire pretty much reek with guilt.
  22. Sammy Sosa can still help a team. He can still play baseball at the ML level. So I ask again, why can't Sammy Sosa get a job?
  23. My question is: if Sosa is a 1st Ballot HOFer, why can't he get a job?
  24. That is going to be something special. I can't wait to see this!
  25. I love the concept of the WBC, I just hate the timing of it. I hope that it isn't a disaster for MLB players and organizations, and frankly think that it should be scheduled around the MLB season.
