  1. OK, buck - you are right. To be more clear: *I think D is very important. *I'd rather have a decent defender with a decent stick than a great defender with a weak stick. *Alex Gonzalez was a great SS for the Cubs. He was a good defensive SS, who made a bad play. It wasn't really fair for me to sound like it was entirely the fault of his error that the Cubs didn't advance. It was a bad break on a otherwise routine play for him. That's baseball. *I believe a pitcher is going to do better with strong defense behind him. That's kinda academic. *I am terrible at debating. Sometimes I take things too seriously. *Yes, I have enjoyed a few bourbon/waters.
  2. Hell, we still don't have a #5 hitter. Actually we do, but he's leading off. We have a few options for leadoff too. Oh well, I think a team needs the right balance of pitching, defense, and offense to be really good. Defense is going to make a bigger impact than 10%. Case in point Alex Gonzalez and his "defense" could have helped the Cubs get to the WS in 2003. Tell me I'm wrong. Gonzalez was on the team mainly for his defense. He hit a few home runs but he surely didn't spend 13 seasons in the league because of his career .302 OBP. You are absolutely right. You are helping my arguement that defense is important to winning teams. I think offense outweighs defense, on a scale - but the defense has to be solid for a team to be really good.
  3. Gonzalez was a good defensive SS, but his bad defense in that particular situation cost the Cubs outs and let the big inning happen. Bad defense hurt the Cubs chance at the World Series in 2003. Good defense helped get them there. My overall arguement is simply that you can't win without good defense. Bad defense cost the Cubs in the 2003 NLCS.

  5. His potential used to be as big as your avatar.

  7. Awwww, sounds like he's frustrated. Good. Now he gets a taste of how the Cub fans feel.
  8. It's all about the W's and L's. You can't win without good defense. You need offense too, and I don't think Pie is going to really hurt us. There is a logjam in the OF right now, but I really think Murton & Soriano are going to be mainstays. Yes you can. You might have trouble winning playoff games with bad defense, but just look at the Red Sox in 2004. I'd much rather have the luxury of good defense up the middle to help the pitching staff out. With this group of arms, they are going to need as much help as possible. Besides, I am sure that Izturis is going to be an offensive upgrade or equal to what we had last year, while providing great defense.
  9. You see, if we still had Neifi he could save us again if Barrett gets hurt.

  11. ...he will be up with the team before the All Star break. For good. The Cubs are really going to need him defensively in CF. I don't think that Soriano in CF is going to be as effective as having him in RF, and Pie in CF. Jones is going to have to be moved. So where will Jones go? That's a good question.
  12. I don't have a big problem with what Grace said. Dempster was horrible last year (I think he will be more effective in 2007, as he will probably be more active) and the Cubs spent a titanic amount of money but still have plenty of holes. We definately improved, but for the money that was thrown out there are still a lot of questions, particularly with the starting pitching and bullpen (closer). Grace said nothing wrong in my opinion, we just don't like to hear that about our team.
  13. I'm buying champagne. 8-) You? I'll drink it.
  14. Hey, if he can get his OB% over .300 - that's an improvement (but still not good enough). I like seeing him being receptive to the new coaching staff, and if he produces, I'd love to see him helping out.
  15. The real question is, how are you guys going to feel when Rich Hill posts a 21-6 record with a 2.95 ERA and fans 240 guys in 210 innings? Why the hell not....

  17. Bulking up definately will affect your swing, like you say. Not always good. Having size definately helps you drive the ball, but you have to be quick on your feet in baseball in so many ways. That combo thing HGH/steroids makes a lot of sense. I had a friend who did a few cycles and he has a beautiful set of man boobs. I've got nothing.
  18. Even if HGH cuts you up, but doesn't increase your strength (which I seriously doubt), your increase in mass alone is going to affect the impact of hitting a baseball. That is simple physics.
  19. Yeah, because SO MANY people hit 60-70 home runs in a season. Really, there is no conclusive evidence.
  20. How does anyone know if Furcal did or didn't apologize, have remorse, buy D Lee a steak dinner, etc.? I just don't get it. I don't think it matters where Furcal was running unless the catcher tried to make a throw and it hit Furcal while he was inside the baseline. Furcal was running on the grass, true (you can get a little better footing on the grass as compared to the dirt), and he cut back towards foul territory as he closed in on the bag. It really doesn't matter, because Eyre's throw brought DLee into the basepath. You can't really blame anyone, because all three guys were trying to do their jobs. There is a saying - "speed kills." This is a perfect example of that.
  21. I think that is very likely. Perhaps Miller will move to 4 and Prior slides into 5, and Marquis flops. I think Izturis is going to be a pleasant surprise. His defense is going to help the pitching staff, and his hitting is going to be a shocker. I think Theriot will eventually be getting most of the time at 2B while hitting 2nd, and don't think Buck Coats will have much of a role on this team. No way is Murton ever moving to RF. He doesn't have the arm. This is why I don't understand the Soriano in CF experiment - Pie is an excellent defender and the sooner he makes it, the better. I don't understand why Soriano isn't learning RF instead of CF. When Pie makes it, the Cubs will be better with him in CF. It sure would make sense for Soriano to have RF experience at that point. Jacque Jones can play CF in the meantime. I'd like to see Guzman have a good half in AAA first. Jeez, that would be nice. Seattle is going to pay that guy, though. He is a marketing goldmine for them. Eric Patterson should probably spend the whole year in AA/AAA. We'll see. Definately possible.
  22. $100. Excuse me. [EDIT] $99.95 with $7 priority shipping. Mine was $107 with shipping. I got jipped. They are available at Wrigleyville Sports for $130. I have seen Mets Cool Base jerseys on Ebay for $185. The first time I saw one was on Ebay and it was a Derrek Lee game used jersey. I have been kinda curious about them since then. Here is the link to Wrigleyville Sports: http://www.wrigleyvillesport.com/istarimages/mp/28246!MAJ-3204635.jpg
  23. I think it would be worth it. BTW, got the tickets Thursday - thanks! Sometime before the games, I'll give you my cell so we can meet up. Absolutely. I'll PM mine over to you.

  25. I guess they are new, but Majestic is making these jerseys and here is the description and a pic: http://www.wrigleyvillesport.com/istarimages/mp/28246!MAJ-3204635.jpg I got one on Ebay for cheap, and it came in today. The package felt like there was a t-shirt in there. The jersey is incredibly light and feels like an Under Armour shirt. Perty cool.
