  1. The Pittsburgh Pirates avoided the arbitration process altogether in 2006 by inking right-hander Kip Wells to a one-year deal worth $4.15 million on Tuesday. Wells can also earn between $50,000 and $275,000 in bonuses, depending upon the number of innings he accumulates. The bonuses kick in at 195 innings pitched and top out at 210 innings pitched. The right-hander went 8-18 with a 5.09 ERA and led the National League in losses and walks (99) What has this market come to? 8-18 with a 5.09 ERA and leads the Nl in walks, but is still granted a 4.15 million dollar contract.
  2. In my opinion on Speed, I believe a team values a guy who can steal a base, can run down a ball hit into the gap and cut it off before it gets to the warning track, more than a homerun. Yea homeruns look pretty, but if i was a GM i would build my team around speed, defense, and pitching.
  3. Having speed is so underated in baseball today.
  4. Hairston plays better defense than Walker, and along with better range. If you look in 2004 before he got hurt he had a .378 on base along with a .303 average not bad.
  5. Cubs need another speed guy to go along with Pierre. Why not Hairston at second base?
  6. My opinion i love it. Gives a chance for the fans to see some of the best players in the game unless you play Royals, and you are looking at Paul Bako for 9 innings. Great defense horrible hitter.
  7. This is the best time of the year. Augie is a good fielder that is about it.
  8. No way the Cubs were going to resign an injury prone Nomar. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
  9. If Wood can stay healthy he is a damn good starter. Wood showed signs of being a big game pitcher in 03. Only if he can work on his mechanics and stay healthy he should return to the 02 and 03 form. We should start a Fund. Every time someone Says "IF KERRY WOOD STAYS HEALTHY" then that person donates to a fund.
  10. Off-season grade so far: C-. From a financial standpoint, you can certainly understand the decision not to offer arbitration to Roger Clemens, but the Astros don't have a prayer of returning to the post-season unless he's in the fold. And another two years of Ausmus? Not wise. Preston Wilson is a reasonable late-hour addition, but he's not going to notably improve the listless offensive attack. How can the Astros get a c-? They have done NOTHING this offseason. They Lost Clemens, no replacement for Bagwell and have 2 solid starting pitchers. They gave the cubs a d. Give me a break.
  11. Cubs should have one of the top bullpen's in the league if they can pitch to their potential and stay healthy the whole year.
  12. You better go get your Cardinals World Series tickets . Nelson's best day's are behind him.
  13. Sup Len, In my opinion i think the Cardinals took a step back this offseason. What do you think?
  14. Yeah i been drinking the blue Koolaid, but i think the Cubs will win in the nl central. The Cardinals lost alot in the bullpen and with Rolen's injury i doubt he will be the same. He just had major shoulder surgery, and look at somone else in the Nl central who had major shoulder surgery (Bagwell). If and that is a BIG IF, when Kerry Wood comes back and contributes like the way he did in 02 and 03 and Mark Prior stay healthy they should be the favorites.
  15. If Mark McGwire is elected to the Hall instead of a Bat next to his name there should be a needle.
  16. Look if the Cubs wanted Clement back they would of just resigned him. This board should be just torn down and set on fire.
  17. Why doesent Sosa go look for a job in the California Pino league, he might find Wild Thing there.
  18. Last time I checked the Florida Marlins won the 2003 world series, with pitching SPEED and defense. I believe, and i might be wrong but the Florida Marlins had like 5 to 6 guys who stole more than 15 bases and Pierre and Castilla finsihed in the top 5. If you have guys that steal a base, it changes the whole pitchers mind set, plus it means more RBI situations for your power hitters.
  19. I cannot believe Jim was considering to trading Prior. Although it was for one of the top players in the game, you do not win with hitting. You win with pitching, speed, and defense. I think Jim wants to model the Texas Rangers. All hitting no pitching and look were that has gotten them.
  20. The Dodgers seem to be going for it all this year. Although this trade is not a blockbuster Baez gives the Dodgers an option for the closer spot if Gagne is not 100% healthy. I still think the Giants will win the West if they can stay healthy.
  21. I agree, it's a risk i would take. You can never have enough pitching
  22. The Cubs have been dumping garbage to Baltimore for 2 years...
